    Nice tips. You seem to be a sweet and mild person as well. Now I play guitar, but a lot of this is applicable to that as well. I've fought with my right hand for years, haha.

      I can't swear to the instrument she's playing in the video, but on her recordings she plays bowlback mandolins made by Alfred Woll and uses Thomastik strings with a Hannabach E string. Before ordering an instrument from Herr Woll, you might want to look for a used bowlback on Reverb or Mandolin Cafe. His start at over 4,000 euros.

    There are a few UNUSED mandolin lessons I had intended for DVD #4. Maybe I should put one or two up on my TH-cam channel jmoss99 as I will never finish that DVD #4 at this point. I am thinking Paddy On The Turn Pike. I don't remember why we left it off the earlier DVDs. I don't have to go back to the master tapes for that one. It is right here on my computer. Frank was youthful in these 2003 videos. It was 4 years before his bypass surgery.

    I like the bright sound, but I use a medium pick and also use a Ranier style pick made from horn. Just don't use this pick for your nose!

  • @congerscott6064
    @congerscott6064 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I use a fender medium guitar pick, works just fine, someone told me to use a " blue chip pick" i looked at them on a website and they wanted $35.00 for a pick ( oh HELL no !) guitar picks are the way to go.

    • @manguydude905

      A great substitute for a Bluechip (especially the CT 55) is the triangle Dunlop primetone 1.4 smooth (not gripped), I own both and I actually prefer the Dunlop because it doesn't feel sticky! Also they are like $10 for three of them!

      I lashed out on a Bluechip and then misplaced it. I went to my local music store and bought one of pretty much everything, but nothing came close to the Bluechip. Luckily someone found it. They ARE worth the money.

    • @congerscott6064
      @congerscott6064 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@richard7071 From what everyone is saying I guess I'm going to have to try one, I did upgrade to a fender 351 heavy pick and have had great results, but it's time to get the real deal, thanks 👍.

    • @richard7071
      @richard7071 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@congerscott6064 the good news is that, despite my experience, you are way less likely to lose an expensive pick. Bluechip will engrave your pick for a small fee. I used to lose guitar picks like Tupperware lids.

    The white pick is the worst thing ever! It's too thick and not flexible enough for playing an exact tremolo or very fast.

      Bill Monroe is considered to be the 'father' of Bluegrass (not the mandolin). Classical mandolin requires a much more refined picking technique than does less formal styles such as Celtic, Bluegrass and folk.

      Yeah the way that she says not to hold it is the way chris thile says to hold it so....yeah. she's a great classical musician but that's not the way to hold it if you want to shred.

    • @matsp888
      @matsp888 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@alasdairmacintyre9383 Different schools I guess. There's a guitarist called Claus Levin who held the pick with more of a closed fist but is now using a more open grip. He shreds like noone else. Not that I'm so fond of shredding for the sake of it.
