    I love these music breakdowns. In one of GameSpot’s videos he pointed out that the Zora main characters in BotW are named after solfège (Mi-fa, Do-re[phan], Si-do[n]), and those very notes are used in their music themes. I’m not so well versed in all of this but would be cool to see if there are more instances in Zora music. Just a deep dive video idea 😅

      The Kokiri in OoT were named like this too.
      "Mido" and "Fado", and Saria aside from being named after a place in The Adventure of Link, might be a musical reference too given that an "aria" is a type of song.

      @@ZeldaMusicTheory King Dorephan. Although I’m not sure he has his own music theme. Mipha and Sidon definitely do have themes. So La is also sort of “Zora” since Japanese changes L into R. I also think some of the NPC Zora’s names in the game have references like that. Here’s the video link (starts minute 7)

    also the chord you play at exactly 38:38, is the first chord (that fits) to play the ballad of the goddess.
    and the part where riju says "you are not alone", another reference to the four note sequence from Age of Calamity plays. that part on the alto sax. love these vids man, as a musician I geek on these concepts haha keep up the good work💯

      Thanks so much! That’s E minor. I would have thought that the “reverse” of Zelda’s Lullaby would be in the same key. I guess they reharmonized it. I’ll have to revisit that track.

  • @20xx-mm-dd
    @20xx-mm-dd ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I know a lot of other people mentioned it in the last video, I tried to comment but I think it was autodeleted because I put a link to the original announcement trailer maybe?
    But the observation was that the 3 note lead-in (the same 3 notes that play when you see the dragon person and when Link is on his stone bird @25:23 and @28:45) is the same as the reversed section in the announcement trailer- I think they already had the theme written in 2019.
    My theory is that this reversed, slightly different version is the "corrputed" version of the theme, and the main theme with the sax is the "restored" version. Just like how we will be restoring the Master Sword, this theme represents restoration and repair.
    Zelda music team is always putting story elements in their music so this is my initial thought.

  • @s0shite
    @s0shite ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Actually now that you point out the opening, it's a pretty nice way to reference where we left off in BoTW. That tune from spirit tracks is the "Zelda Duet" where you have to work together with her to defeat the final boss, similar to where we had to work with Zelda in BoTW

    Amazing detailed breakdown, can’t believe I’ve only discovered your channel now. The director’s cut format is such a great idea.
    I want to point out something: the main Zelda theme (4:59) and the music when Link fails to catch Zelda (22:30) are both in E, but the first is in major and the second in minor, with choral voices in each. Sure the entire theme revolves around E, but I’d like to think this contrasts Link’s failure to his triumph.

  • @sledgedragon2677

    39:00 That specific set of notes sounds more like Kakariko Village from Twilight Princess.
    And 37:37 is way more like the Twilight Princess Hyrule Field theme people thought they heard near the beginning. Might be the same chord, too. You let me know because I'm not a musician lol
    It's likely they are hinting slightly at TP as it's technically the last time we saw Ganondorf before this game. There are more connections, like the Zonai being similar to the Twili, or maybe even the Twili themselves. Some people say the master sword in the logo looks the same as Twili patterns. It all seems to be connected, and I don't think it's coincidental at all, because Nintendo would know if it was.

    • @ZeldaMusicTheory
      @ZeldaMusicTheory  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hyrule theme TP is in the same key, I’m thinking now it MIGHT be intentional. And relates to E3 2017 BOTW trailer, I have a whole other video in the works stay tuned!
      And don’t quite hear the Kakariko theme there, but I DID listen to KV from TP and it has a beautiful example of a b6 b7 1, so you’ll hear that theme again form me in the future eventually.

  • @zoeshaw8722
    @zoeshaw8722 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'm so glad I came across your content! You did a really fantastic analysis. Did you notice that the saxophone section (analysis starting 28:45) uses a motif to create a call (29:24) and response (29:41). Not only that, the choral voices used in the response section seem to mirror the voices heard at (25:23) which many hear as "the future". I believe this was actually subtly setting up the listener's expectations. That section is absolutely an absolutely glorious bit of composition, and deserves a spot in the proper OST of the final game. I can't wait to see how it works out.
    I love your content already, and I have a feeling your channel will grow exponentially in the time leading up to and after TOTK's release. I'm really looking forward to your next videos. Thanks for your hard work!

      Honestly that’s something I’m EVEN MORE passionate about because there’s more nostalgia for me on something like Great Fairy Theme than there is on Mipha’s Theme for example. But I’ve been zeroing in on TOTK simply because it gets WAYYY more searches. And I’ve got so much good Zelda content on hold, I kind of need to wait for a bigger audience to see it. And now we’re like 2 weeks away, I just can’t see an argument to NOT do every TOTK theme I possibly can esp once the game drops. And then when the dust settles, absolutely I’m gonna do more old school Zelda 😉 I got you

    Alright; regarding a little bit of quick research regarding the suona:
    Firstly, the biggest piece of evidence that the instrument played at 2:10 of the trailer video being alto saxophone and not suona is the physical range of the instrument. Suona is only able to go down to its lowest note of A4, while the melody of the trailer goes down to F#4, (Eb on saxophone), which the Suona cannot go to. The tonality of this melodic line sounds exactly as a classical saxophone would. (Obviously segway)
    Second, the timbre of the two instruments are vastly different. If we compare a suona to a soprano saxophone, they sound similar. In fact I'd argue the suona sounds more like how an Oboe would with a soprano mouthpiece if it were possible. But the timbre isn't whiny enough in comparison to an alto reaching its altissimo range.
    Unless we see a studio recording of this piece where a suona is used, I am willing to argue against it.

    I haven't played Spirit Tracks either, but I recognize the Phantom Armor as an armor set you can get in Breath of the Wild through DLC and I've heard musical references in the game too, like Epona's Theme at the stables. There are plenty of references in the game through names, armor, locations, and dialogue. 37:18 one of the refferences that i found that i thought was really clear was this bit. It sounds like the main age of calamity motif anf theme, and it shows it when the new champions are shown. Age of calamity was the game basically about the champions so this one feels intentional

    • @CatalogK9

      @@ZeldaMusicTheory 0:22 and other similar logo-splash moments where we get that very fast little jingle sounds very much like Fi's Theme to me if you slow it down (the others sounds are very gross at that speed, but you can hear the notes more clearly). It's also in the opening sax around 0:46, in a simplified form, but the "shape" of the melody sounds too intentional to be accidental. Things like that are sprinkled throughout, but mostly linked to the main theme itself. Reminds me very much of the way they play with rhythm when transforming the King's theme for the Old Man at the beginning of BoTW, and of course the way so many motifs in the Hyrule Field themes are stretched out to make them only just recognizable if you're listening for them (serving a similar purpose of reinforcing the sense of destruction and rebuilding from the ruins).
