  • In this video, I talk about a so-called "sunken belly" problem in L-number plecos, which occurs far too often among wild-caught specimens.

good info i have always thought they were not fed after catching, i bought a gold nuggat in about 1986 with sunken belly it was in my discus tank so good water, i found it would eat a little live tubifex and slowly it recovered but never grew much.

Thank you for the valuable information. You have solved a very puzzling situation I was facing as well with blue phantom pleco. I have been able to keep all my pleco alive, except a batch I received with this very same problem. I kept the poor fish alive for 2 weeks to a month. Same problem, sunken abdomen and not wanting to eat. Only difference was I allowed the natural immune system to fight off the problem. I did not add any antibiotics, but the end result was the same. If we can get the plecos to eat, we may be able to introduce the natural flora back. I wonder if we could collect normal feces and simply place them in the quarantine with the sick pleco allowing normal bacterial transportation to the gut to occur without treatment with more antibiotics.

Sorry to hear about your plecos! I went through similar situation a few times, including with blue phantoms. Most of the time, I've had those specimen with sunken belly in the same tank with other healthy plecos. I only separated these fish when things were going far too bad (which was always the case) to treat them. Being in the same tank with healthy fish did not help it at all unfortunately.

Wow. How sad. They know what they’re doing yet continue to do it for profit.

You should try probiotics. Just a suggestion

Thanks a lot. Unfortulately I bought mine before watching this video. My L190 has a flat belly, I don't see it eating at all. Just sucking algae in the glass.

Yes, they continue trying to feed, but if you don't see it pooping, most likely it means that it cannot digest anything and is probably going to die

Thank you! Tank-bred plecos are certainly much safer to buy

Great info!!!! I have a couple of L201 (snowball Plecos) I hate them. I have to be honest, Plecos are my LEAST favorite fish. They only come out at night, so I never see them, They eat 1 ounce of food and take a 2 ounce poop. On a scale from cute to ugly, they push the needle right next to ugly. There, it's off my chest. LOL

That's the thing about plecos. I recently had 4 royal plecos in my display tank and I rarely saw them, but they produced as much waste in a day as all my current fish produce in about two weeks. So they had to go for good:) I currently have no plans to get back to pleco keeping.

@@zander2076 So sorry to hear! Unfortunately, as per my experience, there is nothing we can do to help these plecos.
