  • This episode marks our 1-year anniversary since we began the podcast on June 1st 2020! We so appreciate all of the wonderful support from our listeners over the past year. In this episode Sherri, Chelsi, and Billy reminisce on the idea of starting a podcast and how it developed into what it is today. The group also share some of their ideas for the future of the podcast, including new guests, topics, and listener call-in questions. To wrap up this special episode the group discusses the future of the quilting industry and answers a question that was recently posed to Billy, “Isn’t quilting a dying industry?” Also, Sherri and Chelsi are giving away a couple prizes for hitting the 1-year mark. Listen to the full episode for details on how to enter the giveaway!

Entering the contest. One of the first quilting podcasts I found when I first started quilting last year was the quilting marine. He started quilting as a way to deal with his PTSD, and I think he'd be a great guest. Also wanted to let you know that I've been enjoying your videos and have learned a lot, and I was so pleased when you started the podcast. I haven't missed an episode, and I always watch the whole thing. Love to you all, thank you for everything you do! 💕

I am new to quilting. I have been learning, binge watching quilt TH-cam tutorials now for 3 years. I asked my Mom to teach me to sew when I was 10. I spent my high school years making various tops, vests and skirts. Years later when my kids were toddlers I made matching jumpers for Christmas photos and other events. I homeschooled my kids and I would take in the afternoon I would take a break and watch public television with Elenor Burns, Quilt in a Day and Nancy Zieman. I learned so much and these shows transformed me as a crafter. Now I am also still 60 and I have a goal to make quilts for each of my grown children, grandkids and church friends. It’s an exciting time in the quilting community!!! So many amazing ladies like the two of you!! New fabric, new notions, new patterns. it’s an exciting time in our country for crafters, I am forever grateful for your never ending tips, creativity, new fabrics and just all it. I am a full time floor staff nurse and this outlet has saved my life!!! I am laid back in general but this past year my anxiety has been off the charts. Quilting calms me! Energizes me and has helped me make it through the challenges and exhaustion of nursing.
FYI: Here in Indiana one quilting store sold out of sewing machines in 2020 because everyone was buying them to stat sewing again making masks and now quilt classes are full.
One young lady I know who grew up with my kids now owns and online Etsy business that sells fabric and makes quilts. She is married to one of my sons best friends who is an engineer for GM. She herself is a chemist and her goal was to teach. Now she actively part of the quilting community at 28. They recently bought a bigger home that had a basement because her business is growing so much.
It’s a known fact that working with your hands increases endorphins that lowers stress.
Thanks Sheri and Chelsi! Thanks Billy!! Keep teaching, sharing and know that you are changing lives!!!

Love your show, and Billy, I’m one of those who watches from start to finish for each episode. I’m a retired registered nurse who started quilting 50 years ago. I’m also a New Englander and as many of us, we love scrap quilts and our connections to our quilting ancestors. Stating this so my following hopefully will be taken in context.
I was very slow in embracing following A Quilting Life which I followed on Bloglovin. In full disclosure I would check in but only occasionally read the blog. Many quilters are very visual......
Yes, I admit I love those old traditional quilts with their limited color palette back in my grandmother’s time. But I also love the ‘fresh new quilts’. I have made many of both. When reading the blogs I loved the content but not so much the fabrics. Color is personal so please don’t interpret this as criticism. I started to watch A Quilting Life on TH-cam with my iPad maybe 6 months ago.
Honestly, it was Sherri’s personality that “pulled me in” to watch and ignore the color palette of their beautiful quilts. I’m not very good at imagining these lovely and beautiful quilts if they were done in different fabrics. I never miss another TH-cam channel where their forte is taking a pattern from a designer or even an old standard quilt that’s been around for eons.
I love seeing the quilt done in a different fabric (print vs batik) and color, or era of fabric or category (ie juvenile, seasonal, etc). Being so visual, it’s an aha moment for me and I have ended up buying that pattern and delighted with my finished quilt. I would NEVER have bought those patterns if I hadn’t seen what it looks like in fabrics done by different designers.
So my suggestion is: Maybe it might be possible to have viewers make a quilt, such as the one on the table, and have the viewers submit photos of their finished quilts? Then a short slide show of different versions of the quilt.
Idea #2: At the end of a show, a slide show of 2-3 quilts done with A Quilters Life patterns or video content so viewers can see different fabrics and “feeling” quilts so those of us extremely visual quilters can visualize for ourselves how we can make that quilt our own.
And yes, I now am a dedicated watcher of A Quilters Life.

I agree quilting is never going to die it’s been around for generations I am 74 but I have been making quilts off & on since I helped my Mother when I was young. Also I lost my oldest daughter to pancreatic cancer at 48 in 2015.,I take care of her handicapped daughter she has a rare disease called ACDY5 we had no diagnosis until a year after my daughter’s passing & she lost her Dad to esophageal cancer in 2006. So her & her sisters lost their parents young, sorry so long a comment. But what I want to say is sewing & making quilts has been a lifesaver for me it is something that I just calms me & I love seeing the quilts come together in such unique colors. I believe quilting will never go away I have a quilt from my Mothers grandmother that I cherish.

Happy Anniversary! I've really enjoyed your podcast this year, not only for the great ideas and quilts to see, but also because it's a calm, relaxing experience in the insane world we have had this past year. Your goal setting and time management ideas have been inspirational! I wanted to suggest some topic ideas, not just to enter the contest (bonus!) but to let you know my current interests: what works for 2 block quilts, how you start with quilt designing, what quilt design software you use, how you get your paper patterns so nicely printed, advice about starting and maintaining an Etsy shop, and more on efficient quilting techniques. Also, I am really enjoying the 2021 BOM! Thank you both!

I also would like to enter your giveaway. I mostly have made your quilts and you got me hooked on EPP. Grandmothers Garden Flowers are so much fun.

I’m from Victoria Australia, and I watch and love every episode. Thank you for taking the time to make these shows for us to enjoy.
For the give away question: I’d love to learn about the process of how you design your fabric lines. I’m interested in how you come up with the original concept, to how you do the creative part of designing the fabric prints, to how you get the fabric made.
In response to one of the topics you covered today, I think the quilting industry has boomed in the last decade or so, with the help of social media platforms. Being able to watch tutorials on TH-cam has made many of us feel like we can do this too. Other social media platforms also provide a lot of inspiration for quilters, and the rise of online stores has meant that fabric from all our favourite designers is available to us, even if we don’t have a quilt fabric store close by. This hobby has become more accessible to many people, where it used to be something that wasn’t easily self taught, and you had to join guilds to learn about new fabrics, notions and techniques. I’m so grateful that designers like yourselves, take the time to share your fabrics and quilt designs with us on Instagram and your blogs, and teach us how to make projects on TH-cam. You really do help grow this industry by inspiring the creativity in us.

First, kudos to Billy for coming up with the idea for this podcast! I have enjoyed the year of quilt talk, it helped make the year feel less lonely. As a 3rd generation quilter, I have loved hearing about quilting, inspiration, and fun family stories. Also a shoutout to Sherri and Chelsi for creating a fresh and excited world of fabric and patterns. For the giveaway - I would love to hear from Amy Smart about her creative process! I love the quilt that Chelsi shared with the little trees, so I looked it up and think Amy has a free form thought process that is not the norm.

Just finished watching the 1 year anniversary episode! Congratulations!
What I think people don't often understand is how quilting has become an inclusive community for all who are interested. From the young single mom attracted by the colorful, beautiful fabrics to the grandmother willing to share what she has experienced throughout her quilting life. This is why I love your mother daughter collaboration.
I quilt to add heart and love to my home and into the lives of others.
I would love to see other designers and collaberations on your podcast.
I would also like to see smaller projects you make like pillows and gift items.
I don't often have funds/ time to spare for a whole quilt but purchase precuts from your different collections.
Projects using mini charms and charm packs would be awesome. I make your pot holders often!

One year - woo hoo!!! Congratulations! I'd love to hear/see Edyta Sitar on your show. Her piecing and applique methods look so intricate, but I believe they are do-able. Pat Sloan is also one of my faves and has sew much to offer all levels of quilters. And I began quilting/sewing at a very young age, before marriage, and kids. I was in high school (17 years old) and fell in love with it. I had to take a brief hiatus when I went back to work full time, and have recently returned to it as a way to relieve stress and become more creative in my daily life. I look forward to passing the tradition down to my children and grandchildren. I am only 53b and have many years of quilting ahead!

Happy anniversary! I’ve really enjoyed your podcast/videos! I would love to hear from someone at Moda about how they choose new designers and the work that goes into the designs and fabric manufacturing. And how the pandemic has changed all of this behind the scenes. Thank you for all your hard work! I wrote this before Billy shared the “dying quilting” comment. All I can say is what planet do these people live on? People have dusted off their machines and made thousands of masks and when they got bored of that they sewed quilts and clothes. When we can’t sew in groups, we have sewed on Zoom and in campers and on vacations. Men are sewing. Children are sewing! Families are sewing! I have brought my grandmother’s quilts out that she sewed by hand at my uncle’s bedside as he was dying. Thousands of one inch squares. And I felt comforted. No. Quilting is not dying. It’s thriving.

So much fun! I first met you two ladies on the Fat Quarter Quilting Channel before the pandemic! I spend a lot of time watching flosstube videos, but hopefully by watching you maybe I will get more motivated to spend more time in my sewing area! Two of my favorite quilters and fabric designers are Me and My Sister. They are always so funny, and I love their choice of colors. I have been doing the Sewsocialites quilt, and I have enjoyed all the different quilt squares and the designers who are responsible for publishing those free patterns! So thank you both for that. I think quilters are also very involved in doing stitching for charity in many different ways. That may be an interesting topic to talk about! You both make me smile ... and I love the contributions of Billy! Happy June!

Yippee!! One whole year- congrats!! I always look forward to your podcast and really enjoy the tips and quilty chatter. I would love to see or from Taunja Kelvington of Carried Away Quilting with a focus on how to choose fabrics for your quilts. Her use of scraps and leftovers in her projects are always so awesome!!! She seems to have a real knack for putting fabrics together in such a pleasing way. I fell head over heels in love with her recent version of the 'Kindness' quilt on instagram and her blog where she mixed several designers fabrics.

Congratulations Sherri and Chelsi on your ONE year Anniversary! I haven't missed one episode of your lovely podcast. I love your family dynamic, and all I have learned listening to you this past year. A shout-out to Billy for all he does to make your podcast seamless and professional, Happy Birthday Billy! I would love it if you had a chance to interview Karen Brown from Just Get it Done Quilts.

Your podcast is one of my favorites that I look forward to. I would love to see how you use quilts in your everyday lives with your kids, grandkids, decor, etc. Also, interviews with other Moda designers would be fun. I love hearing how people got into quilting; especially their creative journeys of color and design in their lines and patterns. Everyone has a story. ☘️

Wow, 1year - I look forward to the cake episodes!! I would love an informational series of podcasts where you speak with people involved in each aspect of the industry: fabric designer, distributor, production, sales rep, shop owner, average quilter, recipient, collector. Like, what “they” look for, what sells, and why.

Happy Podcast Anniversary! my ideas: have you considered doing a "sit & sew" type interview, maybe about adding handwork details to a machine pieced quilt? I'd love to hear an interview with Karen Lewis, or an in depth discussion about the features you look for in a sewing machine & your favorite place for your machine (on a desk or table, set in a custom cabinet, etc). Thanks very much for spending so much time bringing us each episode!

Happy Anniversary! I love your podcast, and never miss an episode. I have read Sheri's blog for years and so admire your scrappy quilts. I would love some ideas on how you choose what to use in a scrappy quilt when not using a fabric collection. My stash covers a lot of different designers. Also, I think it would be so cool to have Carrie Nelson from Moda be a guest because she has such a wonderful sense of humor and so much experience in scrappy Quilts. Thanks for sharing your talents with us❣

I started quilting during the pregnancy 🤰🏽 of my third child, and made my first quilt. I had to stop when I returned to work🥲 She’s now going on 22. I always knew I’d return to quilting when I retired. I retired 7 years ago👏🏽🙏🏽 I quilt, I quilt, I quilt. I’m making sure EVERY person in my life has a quilt, made with love ♥️ from me🙌🏽. It’s not a dying art.

I have enjoyed watching you on TH-cam. You both are so inspiring. I have learned a lot and look forward to seeing to you all each and every time. I think it important to pass on the craft to the younger generation. My grandmother quilted but I didn’t do my own quilt until I found out I was going to be a grandmother myself. I was blessed with my one and only grandchild...a grand girl, I was bitten by the quilting bug really bad and haven’t stopped quilting. I will be quilting until they throw the dirt on me and hopefully with a quilt included in the casket!!❤️🧵🪡❤️

I would love to know more in-depth about sampler quilts. There are so many different blocks I love but I'm not sure how to go about getting them all together in a quilt. Really enjoy the podcast and the family dynamic. My favorite episode so far is when Billy's girlfriend and Sherri's husband helped with the quilt show! ;)

Congratulations on your Anniversary! I started listening to your podcasts on my phone and now I watch you on TH-cam. I love the both of you! I have bought numerous patterns from both your Etsy shops. Love them all. Chelsea I just finished making your quilt pattern Forest Drive tie my son and daughter in law. It came out beautiful in batiks. I also made your heart pillow sham which I love. And Sherri, I love watching your all your tutorials , I never miss one. I am making your block of the month, and just got your honeycomb precut Balboa to make that hexagon quilt pattern. I also purchased quilt patterns from your shop and my next quilt I’m making is the homebody wall hanging. Can’t wait to see you redo the pattern in the different seasons. Thank you for always bringing a smile to my day with all your podcasts and tutorials and patterns. Please put me in the giveaway. I would appreciated that. Thank you so much!

It's so awesome that you are 1 year old for the podcast. I have been watching on TH-cam for about 4 months, so not the full year. I have been reading Sherri's blog off and on for several years. Love the Saturday Seven, variety is good. 😀
A comment on the health of the quilting industry, I read the results of the 2020 survey of quilters and we are a Billion dollar industry. Yes that's with a B! Not dieing soon!
I would love to be entered into a drawing for a gift card to one of your etsy shops. Keep up the good work and I look forward to another year of podcasts.

I would love to see other mother/daughter or generational team as guests, such as Bonnie and Camille. I am one of four sisters and we all quilt. We actually plan a 4-5 day trip or retreat each year. We inspire encourage one another. Thank you Billy for your willingness to support this!

Love your podcast! Lisa Bonjean Primitive Gatherings would be a great guest! I do not see quilting dying out. Because of you tube you can learn on your own time. I don't have access to a quilt shop but everything ships! I got into it I am retired but I became a widow and it sure is saving my life. I am trying to learn everything. Machine applique quilting and hand quilting and wool applique. My grandma made quilts and tied them. Sadly I didn't learn. Shet had to go into a nursing home way early due to diabetes. She got quilts going in the nursing home. I wish now I had gone and learned how she did it. She made it into our local paper due to her quilt projects !!

Happy Anniversary to all of you. It was very interesting to hear all the stats by Billy. I love watching the TH-cam so I can see all the beautiful quilts. I am glad to hear quilting is thriving.
I would like Christa Watson as a guest. She is a proponent of quilting your own quilts on your sewing machine. I think walking foot quilting is something most quilters could master.
My charity group gets many tops donated when quilters are no longer able to sew. It is a shame because if they could have quilted them they could have gifted them to family and friends.

Congratulations, Sherri, Chelsi and Billy! You have helped to fill some of the quiet, pandemic hours in my sewing room. I will continue to follow you. Sherri, I've been watching your tutorials for a couple of years, and made your 2020 mystery quilt in 18 inch blocks. I love it! You are a kind, interesting pleasant soul with great artistry to share. Chelsi, I love watching your quilting career grow. Thanks for the stats, Billy! I love numbers. I am participating in the give away, and would like to suggest another discussion on color, and would love it if you would interview Pat Sloan. Take care.

Happy Anniversary! I listened, watched and read the Blog for a long time and I learned so much over the years. Thank you for mentioning the European Viewers/ Listeners as well. I am from Germany and quilting has no history here in northern Germany. My Grandmothers and mother did not even know what it is, for them it was all about sewing clothes, knitting and crocheting blankets and embroidering wonderful samplers for the walls. So, I had to learn how to quilt on my own without friends or groups and felt always so warmly welcomed in Sherris corner of the internet. So thank you so much, Sherri, for the way you teached me things step by step and with your calm and friendly way. For future guests: I would love to see Maureen Cracknell and Carolyn Friedlander to learn more about the topics display quilts on Instagram and hand sewing modern designs. Frauke from Germany
Oh, and I would love to enter the giveaway!
