I bought a long atm 10 years ago with no intention of starting a business. My husband had just passed away and I thought it would be fun and fill my time to quilt for my and my friends. Long story short I do nothing but edge to edge and paid for the $38000 I spent on the ma hind in about 2-1/2 years. It’s a great business

Hi Billy...the other way to get exposure in the beginning and to get practice as you're starting out is to
volunteer to quilt some charity quilts for a guild. That way people will see your work. I experimented with a long arm business many years ago but decided I wanted to keep all my quilting as a hobby. I loved being able to quilt over a dozen charity quilts in the beginning. No pressure as they go to charity and your services will be appreciated. A lot faster too than having to make all those quilts to then practice on. There are also fabrics that are called "cheater quilt tops" that you can practice on and gift to charity too. Good luck to you and Isabella. Remember that it's a tax write off too if you give it a go as a business whether you then change your mind or not. My 14 foot long arm saves me a lot of money on my own quilts and gives me pleasure. Please Chelsi always chime in. You and your mom are so much fun to listen to and an inspiration. xx Karen

Getting involved with local quilt guilds is a good way to get the word out about a longarm business. You can also offer to quilt some charity quilts for the guild for them to see your work.

About a week ago I received my half yard bundle of Laguna Sunrise, and shortly my jelly roll will be arriving. As beautiful as the fabric is in photos, nothing beats holding it in your hands, and getting your first good look at it. All the pretty little details. I must say the purples are gorgeous❣ Great job! Can’t wait to see all the great videos you'll take at Quilt Market. Have fun, travel safe.

I wanted to tell Billy and wife that many LA start by doing some charity quilts just to get the feel for it (the first few) as charities are just simply grateful to get the quilt finished. My twin sis was at Quilt Market and got home last night. Someday I'll fly over and go with her to quilt market. I'm going to have to look up Rasberry Summer. Sounds pretty. I knew our store has purchased Strawberry Lemonade and I want to say that you are giving too much credit for the success of that line to someone else. I believe fully it is because of this podcast - so give yourselves credit for making the exposure on line and singular to your 100K+ viewers.

Traditional Trick-or- Treating. I love seeing the kids all dressed up and parents taking time to enjoy spending time with them. This also allows the Senior Citizens that are home bound to see all the costumes.

I’m going to the Houston quilt festival for the first time with a group of girlfriends - so excited! That would be great for Isabelle & Billy to start doing longarm quilting - it would be “all in the family” so fun.

Longarm quilting pricing around my area is 2 to 2.5 cents per inch. That is for allover design.

I’d just like to say “thank you “ for reprinting Strawberry Lemonade line. I’ve been able to find everything I wanted online. Unfortunately my local quilt shop doesn’t have it, but it’s available lots of other retailers online. I’m so excited and I now have to decide which pattern I want to use 😍

I’ve had to change long armers a couple times. I usually take a family member quilt the first time to see how their work looks. I make quilts for the public so I need the work to be top notch

Depending on the shape, those are usually a “dog clip” - like a dog leash”, or a lobster clip - with a pincer or claw-like action when opened and closed.

Love watching the 3 of you each week. Very inspiring! Tip for Chelsie traveling with quilts…..Space Saver bags are perfect. I traveled to Germany with 4 lap size quilts and one king size all with pillowcases (because I make a matching pillowcase or two with each quilt gift) and they all fit in one small carry on suitcase comfortably. I thought when I got them out they’d be all wrinkled and they weren’t!
Good luck and have fun. This is the year we chose not to go to festival and plan several retreats instead.

My husband & I went to Quilt Festival 6 years ago to try out all the different longarms & bought the one I liked best. I didn’t do it to start a business, but I quilt my quilts & charity quilts! It is tons of fun & there is definitely a learning curve, but it is a wonderful business as well if you want to start a business.

Long time Colts fan from Indiana here. I was a Baltimore Colts fan before they moved to Indianapolis. They sure make it difficult to be a fan right now but I’m loyal to the end. My daughter and grandchildren live in San Antonio and our youngest grandson asked us to come to Texas and go to the Colts/Texans game for his birthday several years ago. It was such a great trip. It was a Colts win by the way.

Check out the Bernina Q series. It has a built in stitch regulator which solves the one big issue that newbies have problems with long arming - keeping your stitches consistent. Also, check out Amanda Murphy (Bernina expert) if she is there and her rulers. Game changer for free motion.

I would LOVE to have a chance to longarm quilt for both of you. A dream come true! I’ve been longarm quilting since 2017. I do edge to edge and custom quilting. Quilting is my passion and I’ve put tons and tons of work into learning the skills needed.

I live just 20 minutes away from Indianapolis and also the speedway track. You should come for the race sometime it is a special day and the whole month of May for this area.

This was excellent video/pod cast. Thank you for the topic on long arming. I would really love to start long arming and just do know how to where to go observe talk to and try out the machines. How big of a machine should o get or best one for trying out, edge to edge or free motion. What machine is the best for accomplishing both I will need to see if the is an quilt market/ festival on the Chicago area. .
