Traditionally, as soon as we (in our family) get up, we go to the Pooja room, switch on the lights, light the lamp, do namskar and only then we even go and brush our teeth!
As far as praying is concerned, it's a personal relationship between you and God. You do what you feel is right and what makes you feel connected to God. It's like any other relationship. Like how a third person cannot determine how the relationship between a couple should be or how children should behave with their parents etc., no third person can determine the kind of relationship one has with God.
