Something I'd like to clarify a bit better:
I know I used America as the prime example for poor food portions and regulations, but quite a few of the points apply to many other countries as well.
For example, there are many food dyes that are actually BANNED from food in the USA that are allowed in Europe. E124, a synthetic red food dye linked to exacerbating ADHD problems in kids, is banned in the United States, but not in Europe. Quinoline Yellow, another food dye that can cause allergic reactions/skin rashes, is also banned in the USA, but not Europe.
The point is that much of these chemicals, preservatives, and additives have infiltrated our food everywhere. And it's important to protect yourself by checking ingredients, and being mindful of what you eat as much as possible.

Dude, this is such a copout. A comment six days after you uploaded the video? Really? That's how you're going to address perpetuating a false narrative so vehemently?
I'm gonna address every chapter in this video to the best of my ability, because I believe that while you are an intelligent science-minded guy, this video really misses the mark and is only going to cause a community of the exact crazy people on social media you talk about at the end of the video to be strengthened and reinforced in their ideals.
      1. This is just a hook, ton of statistics and while I could nitpick that the cancer increase in young people---especially bowel cancer which is on the rise---is most likely due to a lack of fiber, not carcinogens in food as is implied, I understand why you aren't going to add an asterisk to the middle of your intro. What I don't understand is the narrative that Gen Z is the sickest generation in history. I'd like to see a source for this, because though I won't write it off immediately I have a feeling that this is an instance of bad statistics, where all it does is take numbers instead of adjusting for worse diagnosis practices. After all, do you really think the people raised on lead and asbestos are healthier than today?
      2. Red 3 IS being banned. They planned to ban it completely ever since they banned it in makeup, even despite a lack of evidence of any carcinogenic effects in the doses that any human could possibly get, and it being phased out of most food products. Blame bureaucracy, not the FDA. Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 are, again, safe in any reasonable dose. And it does need to be pointed out that containments are containments. Meaning they're not intentionally included. Meaning that you cannot blame the dye, you have to blame the dye producers not having a rigorous enough testing process to filter these containments out. And, I just need to stress this, none of these dyes are proven harmful to the average person, not a single one is proven carcinogenic when ingested by humans in food at the quantities used. Onto the hypersensitivity point, Red 40 is the only one with any suggested link between increased consumption of it and ADHD symptoms worsening in children who already have ADHD. Not much to say about that, whether it's true or not, we don't ban things for causing an 8% chance of making a child with ADHD a little more hyperactive. That's like banning peanuts to protect people from peanut allergies. Though, if a link between the two is definitively established, I think a warning label would be a good idea. I can't find anything backing that genotoxicity point in humans, and humans aren't rats. In Europe, only a few countries are required to add that warning label, not the entirety as is suggested in the video; but again, I am not against a warning if any link is actually proven. Also, while I cannot be sure and therefore am not making a statement on Red 3, acting all pompous and going "How could these dyes cause cancer if applied to the skin but not when you eat them?" doesn't work when the doses and mode of transportation between those two things is completely different. For the list of additives, I will talk about the ones I am confident with, and leave you to decide with the ones I am unsure about. Ultimately, I cannot know everything, and I believe spreading misinformation of my own is not a way to debunk misinformation. Potassium Bromate is safe in humans. It's converted to Bromide when cooking, which is harmless as it's processed and removed easily by your kidneys. It is only carcinogenic at levels 1000x higher than what the FDA allows. ADA I am not sure about, can't seem to find much convincing evidence one way or another. rBGH is banned for animal welfare, not for being carcinogenic at the dose that would reach a human. BHA and BHT, like most antioxidants, are actually GOOD for you at the right dose. It is only carcinogenic, again, when you give 1000x the dose to rats! Ractopamine, like rBGH, is banned for animal welfare. It has a half-life of 4 hours, meaning by the time it's on your plate the levels are near if not 0. HFCS is just not banned in the EU. It's just sugar. Chlorine washed chicken is not banned in most places, and the places it is it is not due to being unsafe, it's due to the fact that people thought it made the chicken safer to eat raw despite the fact it only made it safer to handle the outside.
      3. I see this argument, but also I don't think getting a better value for your dollar is a bad thing. It's just something that takes discipline not to overuse. I also think it's disingenuous not to mention that these cultural differences either are caused by or have caused Asian people to have significantly higher rates of eating disorders. Idolizing Japan, the place where women are treated significantly worse and expected to fall into every possible beauty standard even before adulthood because people are skinny is a little gross. I actually really like the point about how "fast food" is more often made to be social in Europe, and I will not argue that the US does not have an issue with how food is viewed and consumed, I just believe that issue is cultural rather than regulational. Saying Europe doesn't smother food in oil and butter is not completely true, but smaller portion sizes and making vegetables more of a focal point is definitely a good idea that I personally have followed in my home to good results. 9:34 This made me laugh. What is this for? This isn't a reputable source of any kind, yet I'm pretty sure this is the only source you link throughout the entire video??? He's spouting the same misinformation as you did earlier in this video, and it's just a random gym nut influencer. Not gonna bother talking about what he says in the video, because I think section 2 does that well enough and I've spent too much time on this.
      4. Nothing to say about this segment, willing to admit that I completely agree that US infrastructure is screwed and walking, shocker, is good for you. You should make a full video on this, if you haven't already.
      5. Same as above, but I will say if that Metabo law doesn't also check in with employees if they suddenly lose weight then it's a biased law, and just reflects what I said earlier about Japan giving poor treatment to people with eating disorders and almost expecting them as a part of the culture. Your conclusion relies off the same misinformation that I addressed earlier, so won't address that despite disagreeing. US healthcare does suck, but not because "They're making us sick to sell us the cure!"
      6. Good segment, would like a full video on insane diet culture too. Carnivores are insane lol. Ultimately I completely agree with the conclusion that a wide variety of food is significantly better than cutting stuff out, and the idea of a diet just being eating well is a little weird.
      7. This segment is fine, some of the same issues as before, especially saying "regulations in our food is desperately needed" when we are ranked 3rd in food safety and quality by the GFSI. Also, telling the consumer to avoid "any preservatives, additives, NATURAL FLAVORS(???) or dyes" is like telling people to avoid water. There is no pre-packaged food that doesn't have at least one of these, and that's because it's literally impossible. You cannot ship food without preservatives, you cannot make food without additives, and you cannot flavor food without flavor(again, ???). I don't mind saying aim for organic, but be aware it's almost 100% not any healthier for you. I just like the variety provided by organic, but most organic produce uses MORE pesticide because organic pesticides don't work as well. And GMO doesn't mean anything bad. GMO has equal if not more nutrients than non-gmo in most foods, and uses less pesticide and fungicide because it is more resistant normally.
      Conclusion
I think this video, just for segment 2, is bad. Segment 2 is a recurring point throughout the video, and it taints anything it comes into contact with. This video should be corrected, but has already done damage just by spreading this misinformation to a ton of people. I DON'T believe, however, that you're a bad creator. I think you fell into the trap a lot of people fall into, which is assuming that once you learn a little bit about a topic, you can educate others about it without going more in depth in your research. You saw things that affirmed the bias you already held, and pushed the things that didn't away. All I want you to do is see this comment, read through it, and change. I'm even going to subscribe, because I want to see this change happen. You hold the power of a platform to educate others, don't take it for granted.

I'm French and German. Here in Europe you will still get fat if you countinue your high fat, salt and sugar diet. It's true that, in european countries high processed food have less ingredients, but you will be still fat even if you are working in a job, where you must move a lot.
Some canned food like tomatos are even imported from China, but labeled as italian, where a lot pesticides are used. After the EU regulations, it's legal to do this, since the laste step is putting the giants can of mixed tomatoes in the can and that happaned in Italy.
The best diet is to reduce the consumption of processed food and to learn how to cook.

Try cutting out all processed food and stick to mostly grass fed animal products and organic vegetables. Make sure to get enought magnesium, zinc, D3, K2 and Fish oil. Eat organic beef liver once a week. You can also take hydrosylated collagen, glutamine and some probiotics. I make my own l.reuteri yoghurt. Eat a lot of fermented foods. So if you eat vegetables stick to kimchi, sauerkraut and if you eat grains at all stick to sour dough bread. I've turned my health around 180° by doing this and healed autoimmune diseases I have had. Not only that suddenly I lose weight and build muscle which I was unable to do before despite me counting calories and training. Yes I could lose some and build some muscile but it was marginal. Now it feels like I'm on steroids or something. Morning woods came back hitting me like a freight train, I wake up 3-4 times a night because of them. I'm 36 now and started 2 years ago. It is never too late. With everything I mentioned above you even have a high chance to cure cancer if you have it already though you'd have to go some steps further in making a long waterfast and then eating zero carbs for some months.
Some other helpful supplements are taurine, selenium, boron and iodine.

My mom and step dad are morbidly obese. I have watched them go through fad diet after fad diet, one of which was so extreme that it limited them to only 500 calories a day and had them taking "pregnancy hormone" drops by mouth, claiming that the HORMONE was what facilitated the weight loss. They both lost 100 pounds on that diet in the span of 6 months, and the moment they stopped eating specifically what the diet guide book told them to, they went back to pizza, greasy wings, high-fat and high-calorie foods on a daily basis. They are both back at the weight they started at, and no matter how many times I tell them that going on a diet is stupid and that they should be making informed decisions on altering their daily dietary patterns, they still go to the extremes. My step dad got gastric sleeve surgery 4 years ago to reduce his stomach size and he has lost no weight as a result, and my mom just sent my wife and I home with 5 pounds of various types of bread because she "realized that it's the carbs that are making her fat." But the 10,000 calories of snack foods within arms reach of them while lounging in the living room for the entire evening has nothing to do with it.
Meanwhile, I constantly struggle to find foods that don't have sucralose and artificial coloring in them if I'm shopping anywhere other than Aldi, and even them I'm occasionally surprised to find one of those two on the ingredients list. Like why the fuck does every flavor of Shasta soda have sucralose in it, despite already having sugar as the main ingredient? Why do we need to make the sweet thing even sweeter ARTIFICIALLY?

Few Japanese people are likely to consciously practice the concept of *hara hachibu* (eating until 80% full), but I believe cultural influences are at play. Being accustomed to eating moderate portions likely reduces the preference for oversized servings. Conversely, if one regularly consumes oversized portions, it may lead to the body adapting to require more, creating a vicious cycle where one becomes increasingly dependent on larger sizes.

People talk about portion sizes, but packaging is also enourmous. In Europe, most food comes in 100 g packages and you use that to feed several people or last several times. Which is about 3.5 ounces. When you get huge packaging, you end up using more because you are serving yourself as a share of the packaging. Also in Europe they will say xxx calories per 100 g, so if you have a 100 g package and eat half the package or a third, you can easily calculate the calories, but in the USA, they will say something like xxx calorie per 7 peanuts. It makes it impossible to understand how many calories you would be consuming by just looking at the package in the store. It makes people give up and just overeat without being conscious.

One thing I've noticed is that us Nordic countries, tend to have even higher food standards than continental Europe. We use less antibiotics for livestock and poultry, and often have even stricter regulations around things like pesticides and herbicide use than continental Europe does. I remember when Sweden first joined the EU about 30 years ago now, there was a fair bit that we suddenly had to put up with that had been banned or regulated here before, but EU allowed so we had to allow it as well :/

I live in the Netherlands for the past 10 years now but I am originally French, and the amount of sugar and sweeteners they put in everything just baffles me... it is like you say ''so sweet it was inedible''. They also seem to be addicted to 0% fat products, 0% sugar in every sweetened product (which means artificial sweeteners), and high-protein everything. The yogurt section is probably the worst when it comes to this, as it is a combo of all three...

They also eat bigger and bigger portions, a lot of hyper-processed food, lots of sodas (a normal fanta here contains sugar AND sweeteners... it just tastes horrid) and the obesity rates, and metabolic disease rates are growing rapidly. I’m a thin American, have been my whole life.
Even as an alcoholic, my weight never got above 145 (I’m 5’6). I’m also severely disabled and cannot work.
    The habits I have are:
No added sugars, once a week treats are allowed by day to day I consume none.
Walking most days of the week for an hour.
Doing small amounts of lifting, most days of the week
Eating veggies with my meals, and eating fruits, seeds, and cheese, as my main snacks
I still eat to many carbs but I bake my own bread using a bread machine. I found I got migraines from store bought breads.
    Habits I see others have:
Consuming huge main portions with few veggies
    Not eating whole grains
    Not consuming enough fiber
    Eating fast food
Unfortunately, I have a disease that means that my daily walks and cooking are literally all I can do. But I feel so much better when I eat and move as much as I feasibly can.
I used to eat tons of added sugar and few actual meals. I lost a bunch of weight rapidly when I quit drinking, and my immune system tanked. I developed a yeast infection in my mouth, throat, stomach and intestines. It was crippling and I vomited daily for months. I finally quit consuming sugar, focused on Whole Foods, gained a little weight back, because when I first took antifungals the infection came right back. Now it’s been gone for months!

But also, car dependence kills walkability, which is the easiest and most accessible form of exercise. I walk about an hour a day as a non-driver and I eat whatever I want and don't gain weight. Without that walking I'd be fat. Most people in the US simply don't get enough exercise because all natural exercise has been replaced by driving cars everywhere. Not Just Bikes is right. Portions in Russia are smaller than in the US (naturally), but the food is FILLING you, not just stuffing. We always struggle to stay fit and healthy looking in the States - and it's not just food, but the quality of lifestyle. Car dependency is killing us. This is utterly ridiculous that you absolutely need a car to survive and participate in society. Sometimes it feels like you live in the US only to pay fees, taxes and service your car since cities were build (well, to be truly correct, plowed down) for cars and papa ford motors industry. As for food...Men, the food here sucks. We don't eat store bought bread, deli meats, frozen foods, ultra processed food. And still! My hair gets greasy every day, my face is constantly breaking out. I am tired of this. Constantly sore back due to lack of mobility, poor skin and nails condition unless you want to drive even more and spend more money and time to find "organic" food which can be found in any neighborhood store abroad at one place in walking distance. I tried several different types of medicines, and went to doctors over the years, but nothing ever really helped. Eventually I realized it was the food and went on a whole journey of self discovery to find which diet worked best for me. I feel much better now.

Yes, we subsidize crop insurance for corn and soybeans so it’s more reliable income for farmers and those crops crowd everything else out in the Midwest and we end up having to import almost $200 billion of food while exporting corn and soybeans to the world.

I was experiencing a lot of health problems and weight gain. Doctor just wanted to give various meds to adress the symptoms. I ended up doing an elimination diet over the course of six months - not with the intention of losing weight, but just to see if I was eating anything that was contributing to my joint/foot pain, exhaustion, and skin issues. Started out eating just red meat, and immediately (two weeks or so) the debilitating pain in my feet that was preventing me from walking in the morning, stopped. I hadn't lost weight at that point, but the pain was gone. Joint pain followed soon after and my skin gradually cleared up. Started introducing other foods and didn't see any problems with veggies, dairy, seafood, but BOOM... Processed seed oils. All my joint and foot pain started up again. Extra virgin olive oil is okay, and I've been playing with avocado oil recently, but for the most part, I stick with butter, ghee and animal fats for cooking.
Result of the elimination diet had me reducing grains, avoiding added sugar in foods that had no need of them, cutting out "vegetable" oils entirely, and I feel better now than I did in my twenties, plus am down 80 pounds without calorie restrictions. I pretty much can eat what I want, but I do need to do most of my own cooking and a LOT of label reading. Processed foods are almost impossible.

9:23 Or the whole thing rests on a false premise and you don't actually lose weight, in the first place. I know someone who went to Japan for 3 months (she maxxed out her visa-free travel limit) and she'd actually gained about 10 pounds versus her weight in the US by the end of the process (she's 5'4" and about 120 pounds normally). After several months back in the US, she'd returned to her prior weight.
What caused it? She went in the summer. Southern Japan, where Tokyo is located, is ungodly hot and humid in the summer. It's like 95 degrees with freakishly high humidity every day. It's even hot when it rains! As a result of all that, it's very difficult to actually do things outdoors. So she was actually more indoor-oriented during her time in Japan than she would normally be in the US at the same time.

I live in america, and I have a pretty healty diet. I am also weirded out by all the weird diet stuff. I just eat mostly meat and vegetables like a normal human being, despite having heavily processed and sickeningly sweet foods everywhere. I dont eat much sugar, partially because it can upset my stomach pretty quickly, but mostly just because everything so sweet. I want my deserts to taste like something other than just straight sweetness. I need flavor.
I am tiny compared to the average person so i have lower food requirements, but at restaurants i usually find that my stomach is full about halfway through.

I think one the most ironic funniest things my homie said to me was that I "Don't eat real food". I've been on a Whole food plant based diet for almost a decade, And My friend who eats fast food drinks sodas eats candy and crap and cant cook a single meal said that to me. He has Chrohn's disease and I was on his case for years telling him he would feel better if only he cleaned up his diet (hes had a few close calls and surgery's due to blockages). He's literally said to me multiple times he would rather die eating his shitty food than clean up his diet, Sadly all this highly palatable ultra refined junk is literally getting people addicted, inflaming them and then they are getting fed the same crap at the hospital. My local hospital literally has a Dunkin Donuts inside it and you can get drinks of soda as a patient, What is going on America its time to wake up these companies and medicals only see you as dollar signs there is no compassion left these days, Its really not hard to eat healthier and exercise a few times a week maybe you'll might start feeling better physically and emotionally if you cut out the processed crap and start moving!

I visited the US a few weeks ago, to Anaheim with my family. I was shocked by how crappy the groceries were. THE smallest produce section I’d ever seen at my life at the supermarket by our Air BnB. The quality of the produce was also horrible - especially considering we were in CA. Normally I try to shop the outside aisles of the supermarket as a rule in Canada. That’s where the produce, Dairy and Meats tend to be that are locally sourced. Even our grains I try to buy the stuff baked in house. It’s also interesting because in Canada many foods are not allowed to be made with HFCS.

Going to be a nerd momentarily but Dungeon Meshi really communicated to me the mindset needed for a healthy relationship with food. To really sit and appreciate a meal and what goes into it (often best done by DIY) instead of mindlessly scoffing it down is a good start..
As a fairly broke person my tips include:
*Frozen veggies are great, often have sales, most nutrients, longer lasting...
*Herbs are fairly easy to take care of IMO, I have a few just sitting on my porch in pots. I'm also planning to look into low maintenance things to grow, so that may be a good idea for others.
*Be willing to shop around 2 or even 3 stores if you have the time
*See what your library offers. Ones in my county have a seed library and some nutrition classes. Also some exercise classes for free. Remember, if you don't wanna be a gym rat you don't gotta be, so keep it simple but consistent. I like to jog, walk nature trails, and stretch to support both.
*Meal planning is really king. But what is queen is to figure out what your pantry staples should be. Lots of guides out there.

I looked up why exactly that was the case with Kashi, and found out that it's because Kellogg's owns them, and although they weren't performing badly in sales, Kellogg's decided from marketing trades with other brands that they needed to free up space in their production budget to make more kinds of chips and less healthy snacks. So that's very frustrating to me and it does seem very intentional, because as I mentioned, they were doing well in sales!!!!

The thing that really stands out to me around food & exercise is how they have been added to the "productivity" rhetoric. Fast Food, gym exercise as a symbol of "success," whereas elsewhere in the world the lifestyle itself is based on balance. Maybe there are lessons we can take from that concept that go beyond "what" and focus on "how".

On a good day, I am usually around 15k, more on weekends. And I never believed that the difference is so significant until I consciously paid attention when visiting friends in the Midwest last summer.
The fact that going to the pool or the gym often requires a car there, while here it's a hassle if you *have* to take the car, is a huge difference. Most stuff is also not designed primarily for cars, which is an incentive to be a pedestrian. The grocery stores often have parking, but the majority will be subterranean or otherwise hidden, while the streets have storefronts directly by the sidewalks.

This video is great!! Once I hit middle school and my mom stopped cooking like she had been because she had to start working, I got highly addicted and accustomed to ultra-processed high sugar and high fat foods!!
It became a nightmare as I saw my weight increase and I started to feel terrible: back pain and tired, many times even lethargic, ALL the time!!!
It was a years-long fight to get myself unaddicted to the foods that made up my terrible diet (and probably would have let to diabetes which is in my family) and finally get my weight down AND maintain it.
I DID fall for some fad diets along the way (low carb high fat, keto, zero-moderation styles). I'm glad that I finally was able to work my way to a more balanced whole foods and moderate approach to eating that FINALLY gave me my life back and better control over my health.
I'm not perfect, but my weight is normal again, my back pain has massively subsided, and I no longer get lethargic during the day!!

Furthermore, even if they were categorically more expensive, shouldn't the quality of our food be one of our top priorities when it comes to spending our money? Food in Taiwan is so much healthier and also there are so many choices and different places to eat from that are open till late but in Australia there is barely anything healthy and everything is far away and closes early and also most foods including meat, vegetables, fruits...etc tastes like poisoned garbage. It was even in the news that not even baby food is nutritious enough in Australia.

I dislike the cultural framing around car dependent infrastructure being something that's uniquely American. It's more a question of timing of development. Boston for example is about as American as you can get and it's walkable, because of when it was built. And guess what, Americans love it. Nobody visits New England and goes "the towns were nice but I wish I had to drive more." Meanwhile you go to Australia and Asia and you'll find the same car dependent nightmare sprawl in cities that were built during the 20th Century. If Europe wasn't built out before the industrial revolution I can guarantee you there would be suburban sprawl there too.

America and Australia are too big and most of the land is just wilderness so you got to take the car .in Europe you can literally walk from city to city in a few hours with a bunch of suburbs farms and a tiny forest between the cities even the forest sometimes has a random vending machine. if you tried that in America or even worse Australia it would be a dangerous multi week adventure .

The thing about grains is they have actually singe-handedly lifted people out of starvation and famine. And back in the day when we ate less super-refined white grains, there were a lot more nutrients in the grains and grain products, as well as in the soil to grow them.
But through centuries of trying to cut agricultural costs, make labour easier, cut food waste, we've leeched out most of the nutrients in the end-product. We've genetically-modified the grains to be more cost-effective and sweet, but less nutritious and worse for our health. Harder on our digestive systems.
The grains in the time of Jesus et al, are not the same grains of today.

i live in an area of the USA where almost everyone is thin, especially the kids. I don't think I've ever met more than three overweight kids my whole life, let alone an obese one. and the parents are usually thin or just mildly overweight too! the main reason is because our area puts a huge emphasis on school sports, I go to a highschool very renowned for its extensive and very good athletics program, almost everyone who goes there is a student athlete, thus, none are fat. also, if they're on a team in school sports, the coaches will often help them get to peak physique (example, my cross country coach would tell us what we should eat leading up to a race for our best performance) and this usually means they're not fat. I'm so glad to live in this area but I think that the food dye thing is so messed up. everyone knows they're bad and nothing happens.
