Hearing you talk about the Colt 1911 is like sitting down at the fireplace after being out in the cold rain. Just warms my heart. I will always feel secure with my combat elite.

Once again, you are an American treasure. Some people may not appreciate a 1911, but love James Dean, Brando. It's the same thing. It is uniquely ours. From Alvin York to the movies and right down to our local matches. This is ours. How does a machine over 100 years old still look futuristic? I have no words.

I’ve had many Colts, starting in the mid 80’s. The 1911 was the pistol for serious hand gunners … according to Jeff Cooper. I never had one I was happy with that came out of Hartford. In the 80’s, they were junk. I got hooked on 10mm early on, and used two different Delta Elites for both duty carry and competition. They both beat themselves to death in short order.
Springfields required a little tuning in the early 90’s, but always turned out to be better on the long run than anything Colt put out. However, for some unknown reason, I bought one of Colts new blued series 70 two years ago. It is probably the best handgun to come out of Hartford in my lifetime. Fit and finish is exactly as it should be. I think right now, truly is the golden era of firearms.

I hope ur right about golden age of firearms. Recent Supreme Court rulings are starting to roll back infringements and if that trend continues maybe we'll see even more cool guns on the civilian market.

I was not a 1911 guy... Until I bought a 1911. First 1911 was a WW2 Vintage Remington Rand with a Colt slide. I say "first" because you know where it goes. Love your videos as always, sir!

That is such a beautiful handgun. The Gold Cup NM has always been a gun I've found extremely beautiful in every way. The Post War NM models are somewhat of a grail gun to me. Just beautiful all around.

It's beyond iconic. It is a tool that has served the US Military so well that it continues in use among some highly trained operators. It earned its longevity by serving us so well for so long.

Colt may have an imperfect history, but as you say - iconic! I’ve been fortunate enough over the last 50 yrs. to have owned and shot MANY Colt firearms, luckily no bad ones, 1911’s, Pythons etc. I’m happy that you’ve added this one to your collection and appreciate and enjoy it so much. My Colt’s Custom Shop “green label” Python was one of the absolute finest handguns I ever owned. My first new 1911, a series 70 Government model in nickel $237! That 6” Python purchased two moths later was $500, a God awful amount of money for a guy making $200 a week back then! GunBlue - enjoy it and thanks for sharing it with all.

My first pistol I ever purchased was a Series 80 Gold Cup National Match in Nickel for $825 in 1992… I’ve always treasured it and it shoots so well I’m thrilled. (Actually out shot my buddy with his new $2500 Les Baer..probably the shooter) I still have my blue box and everything it came with tucked away… great review 👍🏼

Congratulations on your purchase, I to am a 1911 fan boy, we share a lot in common. I was in Nam with the 173rd and 101st and stayed around the green machine for 23 yrs, then I did 17 with the Fed Police. Your are a 100 per cent about the 1911, there is something special about it. I got hooked back in the 60's with Col Cooper and his modern technique. The Army gave me the start and I have followed thru all these years, still rely on it. There is something special about a Colt 1911, enjoy it, us old timers know the magic. Take Care.

Such a beauty. I discovered these guns as a teen and always wanted a blued N.M. I own two in stainless and even EDC'd one of them for about 10 years. This gun is the last 1911 on my list but I just haven't done it yet. Congrats on your fine new Colt!

This is from someone that has never owned a 1911…I’ve always liked them and when allowed to shoot one at the range by the owner, nothing has ever been more accurate and brilliant to shoot. Amazing and beautiful gun! My 1911 friends at the range cringe in disgust when I bring out my Glock, they just ask me to move two lanes over and pretend they don’t know me.

Beautiful pistol! Your presentation is first rate as always. I completely relate to your thoughts on purchasing a Colt 1911. They're a long way from being the best 1911 on the market, but it's a Colt with the longest history of building the 1911!

I've watched a number of your videos, but this one was different. When you were talking about this new Gold Cup you recently purchased, you absolutely beamed! It is obvious you greatly appreciate traditional blued steel and walnut; you're a man after my own heart! Though modern firearms made from stainless steel, carbon fiber, and fiberglass can be made to shoot amazingly well, they simply don't bring out the pride of ownership and the feeling a person gets from handling a firearm made from steel and figured wood!

In my teens during the 70’s in the Philippines, this pistol was so sought after and revered. Mostly it was simply referred to as the Gold Cup. Fantastic work of art and it shot true and flawlessly every time. As a law enforcement officer here in the US I carried a Glock for most of my 30 year career but I still miss learning how to shoot with a Gold Cup during my teen years. No other gun felt so natural in my hands. Thank you Colt.

Two decades ago I spent the money for a Les Baer Premier II SUPER TAC 1911 for the same reasons; an extremely accurate pistol that's guaranteed 1½" groups at 50 yards.

I also own a Les Baer .45acp Thunder Ranch Special 1911 1.5” guarantee @ 50 yards & a Les Baer .45acp Gunsite Academy Incorporated 1911 as well. I had to make a simple modification to each to use Wilson Combat mags (had to remove some metal at the mag well cut out to make room for the tall bumper pads), but other than that they are perfect!

I’ve got 2 Colt 1911’s. The Classic and the Competition in stainless. I polished the internals on both and fitted an extended beaver tail to the classic. I’ve tweaked the sear spring on both and they have excellent 3.5# triggers and are extremely accurate. My shooting buddies with more expensive guns are shocked when they handle them and feel the triggers. I think with a little massaging the Colts are great guns and there’s something cool about owning a Colt.

I purchased a GCNM Series 70 Mark IV about 3 years ago at an estate sale for $1400. I believe it is late 70s vintage and has Pachmyer grips with Colt emblem on them. It has Elliason sights which look identical to those on yours. Right now it is being worked on by my gunsmith. It has feeding and ejection issues andis waiting on parts right now. I really want this gun to work well because like you say they are beautiful and a work of art. I also have a SR stainless 1911, Remington Rand, Tisas and a Rock Island. All of these 45s perform flawlessly and I really hope he can get the Colt up and running. Always enjoy your videos. THANKS

I purchased a used Colt 1911 Government for the same reasons you had, except mine was a 38 Super. It's just something I always wanted, and it shoots like a dream. Like you said, you really don't need to pay big bucks for a really nice 1911.

I am very fortunate to have two very nice 1911s. The first is a Wilson Combat 1996-A2 that was made in 2/1997 that I bought used in 1998. S/N WC00XX. It came with all of the factory documents, test target, WC blue nylon pouch and a couple of WC mags. It is a blued pistol with a target trigger, a beaver tail grip safety with a speed bump, full length guide rod, extended safety and slide release and a commander hammer. The Colt was purchased from a local gun shop in 2000. S/N is 58XX-NM and was manufactured in 1960. It is pretty much standard 1911, very much like yours with a flat ribbed slide and target trigger and NM barrel. It does have the Elliason sight, no Gold Cup etch or diamonds on the wood grips. I kind of lucked up on both of these guns at local shops during slow times for the owners. I've got less than $1800 wrapped up in the two of them.

I get it. I bought and carried this model (but not the National Match level). As an officer, I carried it in Europe as my personal sidearm when I was assigned to the 3rd Armor Division, Frankfort am Main, West Germany, as well as while assigned stateside to the 5th Engineer Battalion Combat , Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Mine had the "fingers" on the barrel bushing, which was designed to improve accuracy. Some said the fingers were prone to failure, but I never had an issue with my handgun. So I'm in the "you can never have too many 1911s" group of enthusiasts. I also made my own holster, which was designed just like the leather issue for the Army. I worked leather at the time, and the only differences between my holster and the issue ones were: 1. Mine was lighter in color; and 2. I had my initials engraved on the fold-over flap.

Beautiful Colt 1911 GPNM !!!! Congrats on your acquisition!
10:00 So glad you mentioned this. I have had numerous discussion with people looking to sell their used firearms as "New" merely because they claimed it was never fired and they left in the box in the box on handling it their home since they bought it. Surely condition is "As New", but it's still a used gun as they were the first buyer, which some can't grasp that concept. Another big factor being warranties are Not Transferable and such...

I know the feeling. I don’t have connections as close to Colt as you do but I’ve always felt the same about the Colt name. My first AR-15 was a Colt LE6920 SOCOM II (which has actually gained value) and years later I purchased a Colt 1911 Government Series 80. I ended up selling the Series 80 a few years ago and have always wanted to replace it. Eventually, last December I purchased a Colt 1911 Competition Series 70 in .45ACP with a blued finish and a Colt 1911 Competition Series 70 in 9mm with a stainless finish at the same time. I love them!

I have a number of 1911s. Some inexpensive, a couple ridiculously expensive. My favorite one is my grandfather's service 1911 made by Colt that he carried throughout the Pacific. It is still all original in the original holster and with 5 magazines, four in original canvas mag pouches. My favorite shooter is my Nighthawk Predator II and I regularly carry a Kimber Ultra Covert. I also bought a Colt through their civilian marksman program a few years ago and ended up with a nice piece that has been refurbished, not the prettiest but it's a decent shooter and well worth the $600 I paid. I also got a Garand through the program for $800. It has mismatched furniture but shoots very well and came with a hard case and three clips as well as about 5lb of cosmoline

The first pistol I ever bought was a Colt Mk IV Series 70 Gold Cup National Match. That was 40 years ago! I still have the box and the original receipt up in the attic. The pistol has had countless thousands of rounds put thru it. The only issues I've ever had were the front sight popping off at the range and I finally wore out the slide pin and had to replace that when it started failing to hold the slide open on the last round. I modified it with Bomar sights after the front sight failure, polished the trigger, and put in target weight springs. It is still my favorite 1911 to shoot out of my collection and is far more accurate than I am. Congratulations and I can't wait to see you shooting that fine pistol. An addendum: With good handholds and a sandbag rest you will be able to regularly hit an 11" pie plate at 100 yards.

I owned the Series 80. The little spring-loaded plunger under the right rear slide, and the damn thing dropped out every time it was racked back. Traded in for an Argentine stamped 1911, basic iron.... never had any problems whatsoever with it. I use 230 grain FMJ, and it is dead-nuts on, every single shot. Good Luck and Good Shooting.

Thanks much for your coverage of the Gold Cup. Special thanks for covering the trigger. Ergonomically, the Gold Cup grip / trigger length / trigger width allows me to press the trigger and get a nice surprise break, or "Control Jerk" the trigger and get almost the same accuracy. Amazing!! Also, the way a Gold Cup has that silky feel as the slide is moved along the frame. Now, if I only had one...

I built a custom double stack 1911 off a Para-Ordnance frame using Wilson Combat parts and the slide assembly from my Sig 1911. It's still my favorite gun and my primary EDC pistol. 15+1 rounds of .45ACP flush fit and a couple 18+1 capacity extended magazines on backup is a lot of firepower.
But even with all of that, there's something magical about a Colt. My best friend owns a Colt Government Model 1911 since he was a huge fan of Tom Selleck and Magnum PI, and it is a thing of beauty. Mine's pretty "tactical", while his is classy.

I bought mine new in the ‘70’s and I still have it today. The only difference is I think I have the the Elliason sight’s instead of the Bomar’s on yours. The Elliasons don’t have those serrations on the back the Bomars have. Beautiful pistols. Congratulations!

If the question is “Do I need another gun?” The answer is always a resounding “YES!” In the past 5 months I have purchased both a 686-6 4 inch (which I sent to Performance Center for the master trigger and action job and a 5.5 inch Ruger New Vaquero in 45 Colt. Yes, I’ve blown my gun budget for the next several years but I’m grinning ear to ear. 😊

A few years ago I purchased 20,000 primers on a sale. I'm sure glad I did that then. I too love my Gold Cup, a stainless version. I've 7 1911's but the Gold Cup will always be No. 1.

Good for you! I have a number of .45s, but none of them are Gold Cups. It’s funny, my very first gun-right out of the Army (1990 or so) was a Colt Combat Commander with the stainless finish, and I still love that gun! I have several Springfields-all the XD models in .45-and a Govt. model, but I never got to get that quality .45 like a Wilson Combat or a Colt Gold Cup. I think every gun collector should have a nice 1911.

Great pistol! I bought one in April, 1976. 2 Months before I got married! I thought it may be the last gun I was ever able to buy. 🤣 It wasn't.
Still one of my favorite handguns. Along with a High Standard Supermatic Citation, I used these two handguns in Bullseye competition for many years. I used the Gold Cup for both the ".45 ACP" and "Any Centerfire" stages.
My collection of 1911s is up to 6 now. In all barrel lengths. But the Gold Cup is still my favorite 1911.
BTW...I keep all my boxes, papers etc. for every gun I buy. I paid $204.73, including sales tax, for the pistol in 1976. If we compared that price to weekly salaries, I bet the current cost is comparable.

According to inflation, your 1976 price of $204 would equate to $1,094 today.

@@GunBlue490 Thanks. I recall it was what I considered a lot of money. I bought my first home later that same year and my mortgage payments were $244/month incl. taxes and insurance escrow.
For those who think guns "were so cheap" then.
BTW, the same day I bought the Gold Cup, there was a new, blued Colt Python in the display case for $255.00 and I bought a Colt Trooper MKIII in 1973 for $154.55 incl. tax.
S&W Model 29s were supposed to retail for $250, but you could hardly find one, and if you did it was priced $500+ (thanks to "Dirty Harry")

Nice to see an S&W guy can appreciate a Colt. I have a blued XSE government model I bought 10 years ago. I put the gold cup grips with the medaliions on it. Really sets it off.

My Navy issued Swissvale PA Switch&Signal manufactured, under colt license for 50 thousand 1911 units was absolutely hands down the most accurate smoothest piece especially even for service piece I have ever had and to my great luck was my service weapon. At 25 and 50 yard 11 o’clock in the bulls eyes constantly!

I'm totally amused by the people who complain about Colts . Yes the company has had some issues and have had financial troubles but this constant talk about "issues with Colt handguns" is laughable. I have many and I have never had an issue with any of mine. About 5 years ago I purchased a stainless Commander and it's perfect. Functions flawlessly. And to throw salt in all your eyes, it shoots better than my Series 70 AND my series 80 Gold Cup National Matches. To add to this further debunking of you people, I purchased a Colt Defender in 9mm about a year and a half ago and it functions perfect. Is amazingly accurate for an Officer's size compact 1911. Last Summer I purchased a 3" Python. It's gorgeous. Fit and finish is 2nd to none. Not to mention it's very accurate for a 3" barrel. You people need to get off the Colt bashing bandwagon...

Great choice on your part! I've always wanted a Gold Cup since I saw my friends back in the mid 70's. I liked the Combat Elite too, but ended up getting a M45A1 and it's a great and accurate pistol.

    Nice video and commentary.
Years ago a gun shop ripped off my Uncle by having him trade & give money for his 1911 Colt Gold Cup. He got a cheap 9mm Italian no name for it. He was a WW2 POW. passed in 2000, GREAT MAN. When I had enough money, I bought one in Stainless Steel and its little brother Colt Commander. They 22:14 will not be sold or traded. They are in his honor. I still have rounds I made with him when I was a child.

My first 1911 was a Para Ordinance 16/40. My age was making it difficult to rack the slide on the 40 so I sold it and purchased a Kimber in 9mm. Have had the Itch for another 1911 in 45 ACP. Today I scratched that itch and purchased a Colt Competition model.

Glad that you purchased a Colt national match and got a good trigger. Thank you for your video about it and some of Colts history. Late last year I picked up a competition for slightly over msrp. The gold cup national match was a few hundred over msrp and I could not bring myself to be price gouged.. my trigger was closer to five pounds so I ordered a cylinder & slide five piece trigger package, a c&s slide stop and thumb safety. It made the handgun from good to excellent. It is only a range toy so the lighter trigger pull weight was a blessing. Otherwise fit and finish was very good.

I hear you on the nostalgia part, and you are correct. I think it continues to be valuable to appreciate that the so-called short comings of Colt in general, but the 1911 specifically, gave impetus to "tinkerers" who have built businesses and reputation making good 1911s even better... think Bill Wilson, for example. For the reasons you note, I have been looking for a good 1917 Colt for nostalgic reasons... don't know about the new Python yet, I think I'll wait a bit. BTW, I also have a SR 1911, and it, like your's, shoots great. Glad to subscribe today, and look forward to more posts. Thanks for your service in the military too!
    Cheers,

I have a gold cup national match. Mine is stainless steel, was made in 1993 according to the serial number. It has a slight undercut on the trigger guard, adjustable skeletonized trigger and hammer, duck tail grip safety, extended thumb safety, an adjustable rear site, and a full-length guide rod.

I baught my first colt 1911 in 2020. It is a competition series and is now my favorite pistol. In the winter months its my carry gun and is possibly my most reliable gun as it has never had an issue.
