I learned clawhammer from your ukulele clawhammer book. One rule that works every time is, if it doesn't sound right you either need more claw or more hammer.
I just watched a claw hammer video of you from 12 years ago!! Just joined your channel excited to learn clawhammer on my banjo ukulele 👍🏻 thanks for the videos they’re great
Thanks! Super clear. I needed the details about whether the stroke used all the fingers, or just the one finger. Plus during the stroke, do I play all four strings. So yes, this was really helpful.
I just realized that while the short string, the drone, is the highest note on a 5-string banjo, the one next to it (technically the 4th string) is the LOWEST note of the five. The 1st string, nearest your knee, is the second-highest, after the 5th string. 2nd string is lower than 1st. 3rd string is lower than 2nd. Again, 4th string is lowest.
This is a great video. On the other hand, I have no useful vision. Where can I go to get a more detailed, less visual guide to the stroke? I feel like I could fake it after this video, but I also feel like I don't actually get the hand motion in my mind quite right. I'm imagining a cross-picking pattern almost. Pad of the finger hits the string, then you brush with the nail then you hit the last string with the pad of the thumb. That, in my mind, is almost like a scoop to hit the melody note, then a flick to do the brush, then twist the wrist for the last note with the thumb. I have a feeling this is far off.
My biggest problem with trying to learn Clawhammer is kind of like patting your head and rubbing your stomach... I can't keep the bum ditty going while hitting the chords or frets on the neck. I either start strumming as if I'm playing a guitar, Or i'll try to switch and start picking... Wish I could get the swing of it.
Hi Aron. Great video! When do you expect that clawhammer banjo book? I noticed that you usually use finger picks but now you play without. Does that mean you play with short nails now? And would you recommend something like freedom picks for people with super short nails like me? Thanks!

By far and away the best explanation and visual of the basic I’ve seen.
Agreed. I was given a banjo during lockdown, with no chance to get a lesson in person. I've watched other videos; this is The Clearest.
Thanks so much Aaron - from the UK!
Thanks Aaron! Best wishes, Ray

It just takes time until the stroke is second nature. Go slow, be patient and go easy on yourself.

I’ve never used picks for Clawhammer style. Just bare nails.
Not sure when the book will be done, but it’s next. I don’t k is anything about freedom picks, sorry!
Hi Boudewijn- the banjo book is finished and available now! www.quietamericanmusic.com/storestore
Try Fred Kelly picks. I've had to take cortisone for asthma; it turns your fingernails into soft felt.
Did you build that banjo?
Yes
Can this style be played on the minstrel banjo?
Yes
@@ackeim am I doing the stroke style right
