This reminds me so much of Marco Pierre White's story that he told at Oxford. Gaining 3 Michelin stars was his life's greatest journey, but once he got the maximum rating from Michelin, running his restaurant because such a boring, taxing slog of maintaining unimaginably high standards. He believed he could either keep being in the kitchen where he could never spend quality time with his children, live a lie by being a celebrity chef who didn't cook the food in his restaurant, or give it all up and free himself from the trap he created. I think a lot of veteran TH-camrs are following in the path that Marco took.
A similar story about Sébastien Bras is explored in depth in the book Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life where he came to more or less the same conclusion. He felt trapped in creating to a standard that wasn't his own.
BRUH this video made me realize that youtube is freelance work. That's incredible and I can't believe it's not talked about more. And I totally agree with you about things like online metrics. I know people online who stress when a twitter post they make doesn't get enough likes. That shit will absolutely tank your confidence and wreck your productivity the moment you falter.
it's very refreshing hearing from someone with the corporate experience to actually know what he's talking about with this stuff but the humanity to remember at the end of the day it's all bullshit and to just do what works.
4:10 That's such a feel. My family doesn't seem to understand just how hard it is for me to make a wish list because I usually just let go of my desires because it's easier than pining for things I'll likely never be able to justify buying.
I am probably going to watch this video 2-3 more times in the next few days. This, in tandem with the "I Do Not Wish to Podcast" video. Really, thank you for putting these thoughts out.
Thanks for the heads up on the podcast video That last line in the video about being the boss to yourself you would want to have hit me hard Ran a business for ten years and wish I would have had that perspective
Thank you for mentioning “The E Myth!” I had never heard of it before, and just started listening to the audiobook after watching this. The first insight about technicians being the ones to start businesses instead of Entrepreneurs is really interesting! Thanks for constantly supporting my critical thinking skills (and my general well-being 😎) with your videos.
Finally got around to watching this!! Nailed it. There is a point where you have to decide what exactly you want. Letting Go - David Hawkins. It talks about this in the chapter about Desire... I mean really the whole book is about letting go so the concept is touched on throughout. It really changed the way I think about creating and work in general.
This is probably the nicest way to tell burnt out successful TH-camrs "skill issue". Jokes aside, good points here even for those of us with different professions!
Love that approach so much, I think it's part of the reason why your videos remain unique and refreshingly enjoyable. I think many youtubers tend to gradually fall into the trap of becoming just like everyone else on the platform in the chase of growth; thumbnails follow the same catchy template, unique editing style turns into a uniform "safe" style, etc. Almost feels like they turn into content machines.
I appreciate that you changed the aspect ratio. This looks way better on mobile. Also this is great advice beyond quitting TH-cam. As someone on the precipice of leaving the corpo world for self-employment due to complacency and feeling stagnant, thank you.
Working in tech a prior company I worked for grew 15% YoY and the CEO that was at the bottom range of what’s considered acceptable. To me growing 15% annually seems like we’re doing more than just good enough. If a business venture is doing well enough to pay the salaries, overhead, equipment, taxes, and have extra left over to cover future lean times, that’s success to me. Totally love the philosophy to have “enough” and peace over grinding for more, more, more.
It's about potential. For some companies, 15% *is* absolutely a great success. But if you took control of Apple right before the release of the iphone, 15% growth would be an immense failure A safe job is nice for the people in the company now, but maybe the company could employ 10x the people in the future and pay 10x the taxes. How would you feel if the company decided "nah we're good with that whole growth thing" right before they hired you :p? I do get what you mean though, people take it too far. Just wanted to say thag a CEO can say something like that and be totally correct. Obviously different on a personal level too, it's not all about the sigma grindset if that makes you depressed

I'm really digging the aspect ratio. The youtube bit rate with the reduced screen space results in some really crisp visuals. It also matches your content style, straight to the point with no wasted space.
I really love this video, I can even apply it even if I'm not a youtuber. These are the topics that aren't really talked about with friends and families, useful advise on how to live life.
Thanks for a great video talking about walking that line and just being true to who you want to be and not what everyone aspires to be. I remember in a different video that you said to set your own schedule. And I’m doing that. Thanks for being a good influencer. I mean influence.
Unrelated to the Video, but this popped up in my recommended randomly. I always knew about Shaq in the Food Tube world but never really watched him. This video put it in my mind to finally subscribe to him on the main channel. And JFC he's a godsend. I'm Italian American; but I live in a Latino mostly Mexican neighborhood that has an authentic Mexican Grocery store like less than five minutes from my house. Now I can start utilizing it as a resource so much more that I now know how to use the ingredients better.
I'm so glad to find someone who shares my indifference to the trend of passive income chasing. I don't want to keep getting money while doing as little as possible, I want to provide value to people and be paid for that. Shaq truly is my parasocial platonic boo.
I remember about a decade ago gaming juggernaut Totalbiscuit was talking about his then friends The Yogscast and how they expanded into a huge enterprise. I specifically remember him talking about how they rented out an office building to do work in and him just kicking back talking about how he can do his day job wearing boxers. Totalbiscuit kept making videos until the cancer grew too far and forced him to stop (he died about a month later) and I just feel like that he came a lot closer to finding the secret to happiness than his more successful contemporaries have.

Linus is not a TH-camr, it's a huge media production company, and they have comparable viewership to multi-national TV channels. That amount of stuff is necessary to have a well-oiled production machine that does like three videos a day. If you don't like the videos, that's cool, but don't mistake LMG for a guy 'doing TH-cam' in the way our boy is.
@@dariuskromoser8936no man. Have worked for companies handling a lot more data than linuses 4k videos, have never required the type of intranet setup and storage he has going on. Thanks Shaq. I’ve been really obsessing over getting a raise this year (If? When? How much? Will it be enough? Should I plan to negotiate?). I agree, this sounds like such a useful perspective.
Adam Ragusea once said "quitting my job to do TH-cam full time just means I work for Google now"
It makes sense, TH-cam literally sends out a 1099 form for the Adsense revenue you get.
