Red lighting up the cigar after the Bill Russell dunk gives me goosebumps ngl. Doing it with the score that close, definition of playing the mental game and winning.
Jerry West 36/10/3 and Bill Russell 25/36/1 had the best games. LA took more free throws but missed 11. LA had a slightly better shooting percentage but the Celtics had 16 more rebounds and took more shots, thanks to Russell.
That was my youth. Russell vs Wilt, Cousy, and Sam Jones with a clutch dagger. Post games we would go play in the barn on our farm in Maine with the neighbors when it was below zero . Another time. Covid 19 stuck at home in Maryland now and remembering a different world.
Bill Russell is a freak of nature. He's athletic, runs like a deer, agile, quick and fast. He literally can Guard smaller players. No centers move like that in today's NBA.
1. they really sucked at crowd control back in the day...2. Russell elevates so easily and quickly; absolute elite athletic skills that transcends any era of basketball
I wasn't alive for this era but certainly heard a lot about it growing up watching the '80s Celtics legends. This was a glorious time for the Celtics, Bill Russell was one of the most dominant centers in the game and an unparalleled rebounder, as you could see in this clip. Jerry West (RIP) was a great shooter indeed but there were so many who contributed to this golden era of Celtics' and NBA basketball. Love the clear, easy to watch footage, hard to believe this is closing on 60 years ago.
Look at Russell block that shot and the dunk from a stand still...his athletic abilities were amazing, he could jump and pass and defend and I don't care what anyone says he could play today or tomorrow or 100 years from now
The smoothness to a lot of those mid range shots are actually quite solid. It’s the lack of Defense that really stood out to me. Hardly anyone ever has a hand in their face. It’s like they just let them shoot and hope for the best haha.
There is a good view of the most unappreciated great player of all-time and that is, of course, Sam Jones. He was the greatest championship shooter in basketball history. However, he was also a great all-around player as well. He played on 9 title teams as a major contributor (played more than 50% of the schedule & top 6 in MinPG on each of the 9 teams). He & Jordan are the only backcourt players to ever lead those 6 such players on any title team in both PPG & FG% & they each did it 3X.
I was surprised that how developed this game looks for 1966. Once the '70s and early '80s came around, those guys could ball in the three-point line change the game forever. It seems like all of these guys have a good mid-range jumper, but with no three-point line the best option is getting as close to the hoop as possible. Soon as the three-point line came into play, it was a strategy now. That's how the guard turned into the most important player in a lot of aspects. The three-point shot is the preferred method of playing through analytics.
Before there was Bird and Magic, by then they change everything not to mention a man to follow named Michael (Jordan) later onward and by this time the NBA was going to be the ultimate sport that has matured and flourish to this day. OH HOW THE YEARS GO BY!!! Vanessa Williams thank you for putting a musical stamp on this glorious game.
Im sorry but its just so funny how they dribble. Its how the 5 year olds at basketball camps dribble. Basketball has come a longggg longggg way, thats for sure.
Well if they dribbled any other way it would be a carry. The carrying rules probably started to get a little loose when Pistol Pete became popular. But all in all thank Iverson, that basketball players could pretty much carry the ball now.
I realized that 60s and 70s player in my opinion is much better. The false believe of everyone that today is more skilled but it wrong. Imagine they had only limited playstyle because of rules. No palming the ball while dribbling is struggle in my opinion.
Their shots were so pure back then. I was rolling when the announcer said what a move by WEst though, joint basic as phuck compared to now. 70-71 Lakers my squad on 2K though...
Watch the Celtics trying to press Walt Hazzard in the backcourt: big mistake as he blows right by the whole team. There has never been anything more beautiful than Hazzard on the fastbreak. Halfcourt was a different story.
I like watching these old clips of The Boston Celtics. Why did The Lakers not foul at the end? They were down 2 points with 4 seconds and they just let the Celts run out the clock.
This game goes to show how much rule changes affect the game of basketball. If anyone wonders why the dribbling looks different it’s cuz they had real carry rules back then and the hand HAD to be on top of the ball.
Bill Russell, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor... So many legends on these teams.
Jerry West's pull up jumper was way a head of his time.
