To be exact, Tokyo Drift wasn't too bad, but it didn't succeed necessarily as the earlier 2 movies. It made a bit less money in the box office because people didn't like they didn't get to see Vin Diesel or Paul Walker in Tokyo Drift. I still think the movie is not bad, but can't argue with proof about critics.

I'm a big JDM fan, and have never seen Tokyo Drift until recently. Honestly, biggest problem with the movie is the main character, the premise, and the lack of cars. There were WAY more JDM cars in the first/second movie than in TD. And, any big meets all the cars were glossed over and the camera focused on the girls. Two of the main cars weren't even JDM, and there was a severe under representation of any JDM manf other than Nissan. The main character was a "muh V8" guy, who was extremely unlikable for 3/4ths of the movie, and it was the first movie where a domestic beat a JDM car... in Japan! I was probably way too excited for the movie, but it was a huge letdown.

I've always liked the car cause it felt like a metaphor for the main character's arc, it's a classic american car using a respected japanese engine put together with the help of family and friends, it resonates with the story of the american dude getting used to Japan and overcoming obstacles making friends and reuniting with family along the way. As far as a pure car movie goes Tokyo drift was the best by far imo, they say when they made the first one they weren't expecting many actual car enthusiasts to go see it (I don't why they didn't but apparently they didn't) and I assume the same for a second. With Tokyo Drift it feels like they finally caught on that real car enthusiasts were into the movies so they went to actually accommodate to real car enthusiasts, and aside from it lacking the og cast it definitely delivered, I mean Keiichi Tsuchiya was a stunt coordinator and made a cameo, no normal audience member would have any idea who he is, he was just some Japanese actor to them

The reason why these newer FF movies are huge in the box office is because they were shown in China, there's a big growth in middle class there and it's a massive market for films, it's the same reason why Transformers and Avenger movies are raking in so much money.

When that movie let out from theaters, EVERYONE leaving the theater with a tuner, hit the freeway to go race each other. So often, that you could tell everytime the movie let out. Everyone raced EVERYWHERE! It was a GREAT time in American/"auto-ficianado" culture. FAR better than the garbage fake news/politics that we have today.

Just because the more recent movies don't have supras and skylines it doesn't mean they're not centered around cars anymore. They diversified their classic cars you just don't know or care about them. It'd be kinda lame to recycle the same cars over and over again don't you think?

Yeah as corny as 99% of the dialogue was that scene in the garage with the charger was probably one of the most iconic and relatable for a lot of car guys. A lot of people came to love vehicles because of the times spent with a parent or sibling wrenching, cruising, and racing. And think we have all had that car or that "Unicorn" that scared the shit out of us or never quite had the best of luck with.

tokyo drift is so underrated. Probably the only other movie in the series besides 1 that isnt some sort of box office action/heist film. in many ways, its more accurate of the car scene/people than 1. 1 was good, but i have to admit that 1 was more of a hiest movie that involved cars. Tokyo drift was more of car movie: a guy thrown into a new world and culture, and we got to see his process and growth.
The scene where the girl and main guy drives through the mountain at night...car people love that kind of stuff. Just driving at night with you and your machine in a state of bliss. They also had 2 iconic drift cars in the scene: Signal Auto's copper s13 and the Falken RX7. And an amazing song choice for that scene too!

digimon916 To be fair, 1 was mostly a car culture film with a heist tacked onto the tail end, along with the train jump and all that stuff. It does get mentioned at the start, but you don’t see the ramifications until 70% of the way through the movie.

I’m 19 I was born January 2001, my parents to this day remind me that the first fast and the furious was the first movie that I watched all the way through without getting distracted. I was maybe 18 months old, I rewatched the movie at least weekly up until I was about 8. We didn’t have cable or internet to see when movies were released. Tokyo drift just came too theaters and I went too a cousins house and saw he had a movie called 2 fast 2 furious. He told me it was the next movie in the franchise and he told me a third one was coming out soon too. I still remember how excited I was to watch the movie as I watched that universal logo turn into the wheel on the truck. Literally the next day the cousin took me to see Tokyo Drift. I started to go and see each movie that came out after until 7. He moved further away so we don’t see each other as much but he still tells me about that time I came over and I ended up watching that 2 fast 2 furious. I grew up with these movies and I love all of them, even the newer ones. I don’t really care about how they turned away from car culture because it wasn’t only the cars I looked forward too. I love the characters energy with each other and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. When Paul died I was devastated. It was one of my dreams to meet him and it still kind of hurts knowing I never will. Life goes on, the first three movies are my whole childhood and I love them so much. Thanks if you read this far 😂 have a good day
