My Dad, Johnny Wearing, made me sit and listen to this quartet many years ago.Being a touring rock and roll musician and singer I normally blew him off and acted like I knew something. Well,Now I am still blown away by these guys and am so grateful for dad's influence. He would have me listen to the Tenor from the Suntones and my God what a sweet voice. And naturally I always loved the Slamkas.Dad actually won the District Championship with Jack in 1981.

When I think of you, Kipp, I remember my seeing you several hours after you had won your first gold medal. You were sitting all alone on the hallway floor with your head hung between your knees. I could see that you were exhausted, overcome with both physical and emotional fatigue as you finally had a moment, all by yourself, to finally absorb what had happened.
This image was impressive enough to remember after all these many years.

I joined SPEBSQSA in February 1981. My very first barbershop show was in April that year and Bluegrass Student Union was a guest quartet. I was astonished! About a year later I was in a quartet which was invited to sing at a Detroit area barbershop show, and guess who was the other guest quartet. Yep. Bluegrass Student Union. I tried to play it cool like I belonged there, and they treated us as equals. When I changed parts from tenor to lead, Ken was my role model. He still is in some ways.

The Bluegrass Student Union has been my favorite barbershop quartet since I first heard them. Richard Staab is the best bass I have ever heard.

Sometimes the Universe's sense of humor makes me really laugh.
Me and my quartet we consider Bluegrass Student Union to be the best barbershop quartet ever. We keep listening to their recordings and watching their videos. So! Me watching this video (as old as I am! Yeah, I was born in that golden year of 1984!) and reading comments and what do I find? A 4 years old comment from the person that actually led me to the barbershop music! Yes, it was in 2012 when I saw your video "Hello Mary Lou" that made me start to discover beauty of the barbershop music for the first time! I formed my first quartet in 2015 and since that time I keep watching your (and Sonny's) videos as an inspiration.
Now? Soon we are going to celebrate two years of our current quartet, working hard on our music, entertaining audience here in the Czech Republic - and the lead of the legendary BSU, Kenny Ray Hatton as my friend helping us online accross the ocean with our music... Dear God, thank you, this is a real blessing. Now I feel somehow "complete".
And thank you, Trudbol! Together with BSU you have been a great inspiration too!!!

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen and listened to the Bluegrass Student Union over the last 30-35 years. And still, watching this today, I get chills. There have been many outstanding quartets in the society over the years, but none stand out to me like BGSU. The sound is so superb. Everything is done to perfection. The singing, the speaking, the timing, the transitions, the professionalism... it just boggles my mind. I was fortunate enough to see this particular show package in person back in my college days. I still get excited when I try to tell people about it. I was also fortunate enough to meet Kenny after one of our VM shows several years ago. The amount of planning, rehearsal and preparation that went into these performances to make them so flawless just confounds me. I wish I could personally shake each of their hands and tell them how much they have influenced my life. I truly, truly appreciate every little aspect of what this quartet ever did. They will always be my favorite! Thanks guys.

I've always been amazed at the breath control of BSU. They could sing forever on one breath and manage to breath all together even in the quickest of beats...and go on forever again. "I Told Them All About You Dear" is a good example of this. Such amazing control. I have the most fun singing tenor along with their recordings. Fun songs and great arrangements!

Oh my, what a wonderful surprise to find this on FB!! I was at this show when I sang with the Auctioneer Chorus in Winston - Salem. I agree with the comments about the BGSU!! I have listened to them 100's of times and have never heard or witnessed a smoother, more entertaining foursome. Thank you . . .thank you for posting!!!

Thanks, dlorenz786, for posting this video to TH-cam. We got the call from the Charlotte, NC Chapter a few days before the show to fill in for the OK 4, due to an illness in their quartet. We were surprised to find ourselves being filmed by a professional crew for a PBS special that they were syndicating. It was a five-camera shoot, with a real live video director calling the shots from a truck in the parking lot. We just got lucky - but we didn't run into our pals, the GA or Midnight Express that night.

I'm SO glad that you like this being here. I was terrified that somebody would take it down, before I had a chance to share this with the world. While it was an honor to sing with Masterpiece at their swansong at this year's international, and I love them dearly as individuals, Bluegrass Student Union is the quartet that I will choose to listen to, for pleasure, every time.

Ken - I MAY still have a copy of the original show vcr tape, if you would be interested in a copy. I cut my teeth on BGSU and my quartet, Sound Affects, stole from...urr...copied...uhmmm...imitated BGSU throughout our 7-year run in the Dixie District. Dan (the Man) Burgess has been the bari gold-standard for me. THANKS to all four of you for the indelible contribution you guys made to the barbershop world.

The year: 1979. The place: Minneapolis Convention Center. The event: the SPEBSQSA annual competition. As a high school junior who was new to singing in and experiencing barbershop music, I was invited by my friend (who introduced me to the SPEBSQSA world) to be a "runner" during the event, meaning that he and I would bring the quartets from their dressing room to the "ready" spot in the wings. This gave us plenty of opportunity to chat with the various quartets, and two of them who made a major impact on me with their genuine friendliness were The 139th Street Quartet, and The Bluegrass Student Union. To the BSU guys, if any of you read this: that brief interaction meant more to me than you could know. To hear you share your immense talent and charisma on stage, and then treat a little high school punk with the respect and friendliness that you did, made that entire experience extremely special to me. Gentlemen....THANK YOU!!

Thanks Ken. One of my top ten barbershopping experiences was at Harmony College in 1978. It was there that I sang bari on about thirty-minutes of tags with you guys. I have never heard so many overtones since then - Wow.
Since this upload was a copy of a copy of a copy, if you've got a better one, please upload it. I know a few years ago you were seeking a better tape. I figured it was about time to upload this stellar performance of you guys!
