      That would be the dream! I think it could be every bit as strong if you planned it out right!
      I already have revisions kicking around my head but would love to see what you come up with!

    Is there anyway you could email me your measurements? I’m trying to figure out where to make cuts and I don’t have the brain for it. And now I’ve bought supplies so I need to finish now haha

    Awesome work am gonna try this on a 89 k1500 the long bed doesn’t have a lot of good looking options

    • @HeretoWherever
      @HeretoWherever  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good idea! You could build a 4th hoop (or 5th) to even out the length of the bed and you'd only be out about 25 bucks per additional hoop!

    I’m doing this same exact thing the same exact way but it will be inside of a bed topper supporting a roof rack. Any tips?

    Hey man, this thing is exactly what I had in mind for my trailer! However, could you post up a rough description of the math you used for you overall length of the cross bars?

    • @HeretoWherever
      @HeretoWherever  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You could go at it a couple different ways.
      I measured across and got the overall length. I decided on 12 inches of vertical height so from there I drew out a trapezoid and knew I was using 60* brackets (you could use 45 or really any angle really)
      Chop the trapezoid up into two triangles with right angles, and 1 rectangle. You have height, and your angles. From there you can get a perimeter of the full object and subtract the bottom dimension.
      This gives you your overall length of channel needed and where to cut for your bends. I added an extra 1/8 of an inch based on a hunch some of the length would be eaten up in the bend. It worked out about right there.
      Otherwise you could know you want a platform with of x and work backward to figure out what angle brackets you would use. This would likely require custom vs off the shelf brackets so I went with option 1.
      I know thats a wordy reply but hopefully it helps!

    Great vid man! I actually built one for my 2012 Toyota Tundra Crewmax and so far it's working like a charm. Going to take it overlanding for the first time right now in April or May. But, great vid man, great ingenuity! I did mine a bit higher than yours tho.

      Awesome to hear Carlos!
      It's a really handy material this strut chanel and you can adapt it to suit your needs. I originally made mine as a tent platform and now it is a rooftop box mount and storage container rack.

    Really dig try build man! Just wondering, can you tell me how much weight you've placed on it so far and the degree of off-roading you've done? I'm considering attempting to make my own rack and this video has given me some thoughts. I'm curious if it'll hold up a rooftop tent when off pavement

    • @HeretoWherever
      @HeretoWherever  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much!!
      I built it specifically for a rooftop tent but we had another child and the logistics did not make sense... at least for now.
      I modified the rack in another video and only use 2 hoops now to mount a roof top box with maybe 200 lbs in it and have clapped out the bump stops on occasion 😅.
      My guess is it would support a few hundred doing off road trails and several hundred pounds when static.
      You could also add a 4th hoop for about 30 bucks and buy some peace of mind as well!

  • @calebharris5473
    @calebharris5473 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you have a weight estimate for the rack as far as how much that it can hold? Also great vid!

    • @HeretoWherever
      @HeretoWherever  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Purely gut feeling here, but I'd say 250 lbs dynamic load and several hundred static is a safe bet.
      Goal was to use this for a roof top tent, but some life changes have shifted that... (newborn)
      If the load is distributed between the hoops I think it would do just fine for the intended goal.

    Totally bad ass. I'm doing this this weekend for a roof top tent. How tall did you make it? I have a Decked system that will be in the bed and want to make sure I have decent clearance but not too high above my cab. Oh and where abouts in Va?

    • @HeretoWherever
      @HeretoWherever  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rack top surface is about 1 foot above the bed side rails. With the decked in there you will have to decide how much room you want below the rack before the to of the drawers. I am not sure how much room you will have, maybe 18-20 inches?
      I am on the outskirts of the greater NOVA area.

      Based on no scientific data whatsoever, the gut says several hundred pounds static and a couple hundred dynamic (bouncing around off road).

    Why would you want a rack that’s shorter than your roof?

    • @HeretoWherever
      @HeretoWherever  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The goal was to mount a roof top tent on the rack so that the top of the tent would be even with the cab of the trucks roofline. This would help reduce drag on the highway, and keep the center of gravity a little bit lower.
      Currently the family is in a ground tent and we are mounting a roof top cargo box up there which you can see in the DIY bed rack modifications video here:
