I think this is my favorite machine I have seen you showcase. Years ago, I read that the US Library of Congress was using Nagra machines for playback of archived tapes because they handled tape so well... Seems to me that this machine would be an excellent candidate for that kind of delicate work, as well. I wish I had one of these when I was cutting together radio shows and commercials on tape. The Otari machines I used to use were rough on tape.
Its well over 300 pages, studer manuals are a mix of A4 and A3 (Diagrams) and fill a large binder, thats the service manual, then some machines have a user manual too.
quite often I do use the line out of the machines direct into the recorders but this video was not a demonstration of the recorders sound quality but of the recorder functioning. check out my other videos such as Sony PCM3402 Vs Studer C37 for sound comparison, its not the best as TH-cam has a lot of sound compression.
It is very good on the tape, I was going to add a bit showing the different reels it took, the video clip was of a 3 inch reel on the left and a 11.5" platter on the right, showing the recorder copes well with odd reels, it does not however like thin tape, it will play it but I can see it will crease the tape after a few runs, can drop the tape tension though to stop this.
Can you make some videos with the line out directly recorded into the video. Then we can really appreciate the great sounds of these machines. You can use a program called CDEX which is free to record audio from line out on the PC.
Hello and thank you, I am the composer, the song can be listened to on one of my other videos entitled "Leevers Rich Series E and EMI TR-90 reel to reel"
For me it does ;) I do have a few ATR-102 machines and they do sound awesome, I'm more of a Studer user so I am going to be biased towards them, but I haven’t put them side by side to test them.

The manual for this machine must be enormous!

Hi, I have just been given an A812 and it seems to be working fine. I was wondering what is the best kind of tape to get for it?
Thank you!
Thank you for that, I will give it a try

Thank you for pointing out the "wrong" spelling :-P I have updated it, my spelling never has been my strong point.
Thank you, the A820 should be even better hoefully, you never know, this machine may be going once I get one of thoes.
Thank you, the original tune is based on the "scum bar" from Monkey Islands (Amiga)
