Hint. After you align the machine..you should make your own test tape at various frequencies/levels & mix of frequencies.
I worked at the largest video post facility and each time we changed video heads we would create a test tape for that head. This way we can always set the head for optimum recording aa video heads wear and tape guides will be on manual setup (not servo mode)
Ps you.forgot to adjust head azimuth

Great vid, but we needed to see the vu meter needles rather than the decks buttons !

studer manual says to use -20db tones for bias and hf record calibration.

It does, but most line-up tapes frequency test sections are recorded at 10dBu below the replay level section. Use the same level on the record line-up and you will be fine. Just dont do rec hf and bias adjustments at operational level so as to avoid tape saturation.

Hello Dan. I have the same machine. Mine has the Generator card. From which source dis you get your 100, 1000, 10000Hz signal? Internal to your machine or external from a desk source? Kind regards Mike.

I had the tones on MRL Tape to set up repro. I used the oscillator on the console for record calibration. You could use the generator card for the record setup.

@@MonsieurKagan Thanks for the reply. I am just getting acquainted with my machine. I will give it a try after I have checked the 0db cal' level on playback. After all, if that is incorrect, then so will everything else be. So far having trouble finding the Cal tape info in either the Op or the service info. I will keep at it though. Asside from that, the recordings are just stunning. Lets catch up later on the same subject. Bw Mike.

@@MonsieurKagan OK Prescott. I have now found the info to identify the missing piece of my calibration puzzle. Dan says 'chose your ref level' Do you match your ref lvl to the type of tape being used at the time, or do you use your chosen lvl 320 or 510mWb and set the over bias to give the correct tonal balance either by ear by THD meter / measurement?? Kind regards Mike.

How about cleaning the heads before you start! I would hope never to get big errors like that; if I did I would not want to just correct at three frequencies but would want to see the full response, which on my A812 is well within 1dB up to 20kHz and -3dB at 31kHz .

yeah of course, but before that he should wash his hands, only then the video is complete LOL

Absolutely valid objection! Thoroughly cleaning all heads and tape guides is mandatory to get a correct calibration. Demagnetizing the heads might also be good idea.

@@peterz3373 Yes, thanks. (by the way, I designed the equipment used by Studer and many others to measure audio quality and check performance!)

Who puts an expensive MRL tape on a machine and leaves the machine in record ready!
