I'll be honest, the simple change of just making Whomps NOT cross-eyed makes them go from goofy to terrifying.
(But the larger size, faster movements and insta-kill attack do help as well. )

O wonder what a young Whomp or Thwomp looks like...
I don't think the side-stepping ones and the one with a hammer count as regular Whomps. I suspect they are their own species, since the designs and behaviour are very different, and they usually keep that stuff the same. The side-steppers have appeared in several games, and have looked and acted the same in all of them - they must be different enemies.
The side-stepping ones are Walleyes, they are a sub-species of Whomp.
Edit: The more castle-like ones are called Wallops, a species of Walleye

The Stairfase Ogre is a combination of having the behavior of a Thwomp, teeth of a Tox Box, and walking movement of a Whomp.
Of course, the S.O is a combination of both Whomp and Thwomp, but the weakness is either the forehead or the tops of the head. The forehead must be destroyed by possessing a Pokio.

Was it really necessary to remove their plasters? Watching Mario 64 was how I get into this series, and I thought that was what made them so iconic and comedic.
Edit: Seeing the plaster re-appear here at 16:00 made me giddy with nostalgia, so I hope it becomes a mainstay soon!
