I sometimes feel like a fool battling weeds, by mid-summer they always win. I retired this year, I'll be 66 in May, and have committed myself to winning this year. The weeds will win in the end but with your advice John, I feel as though I know what I'm doing. Today I dugout 6 medium to large yucca plants and two white mulberry trees. I also have mugwort, bind-weed, and American bittersweet coming on, so please wish me luck! Thanks John for taking the time, you have another subscriber...😉👍
You are worth 3 men or a bunch of teenagers! My Mother-in-law always called it, "working like you're killing snakes." Along with such plant knowledge. New subscriber. Will be binge watching!
love the video thanks. i have a question i have new flower beds but no flowers will be planted for some time. what is best to put down on soil to control weeds?
good afternoon john i ate slept and drank the late GEOFF HAMILTON and gardeners world the current offerings are pure c$£% YOU have de gift im have just found your channel, but covid will stop me meeting you..for the moment GREAT STUFF
Yup. I've got ground elder and have dug it out but even though I think I've got it all, I haven't. I've used a mix of thick newspaper, cardboard and plastic weed barrier. It's still there I know but I'm hoping eventually without sun for years, it will die. I can't dig out all my big rhodos and hydrangeas, so....🤷🏻♀️
I split wood and have large pieces of bark. I have a very nice garden and don't want to screw it up. Is it advisable to use large bark that came off of green Oak and Ash logs? Thank you.
Love to know, how to control the bindweed that grows under the fence from the neighbours garden, try gently pulling it, never got all the root and then I get ten more coming under, she likes it as it has "pretty flowers" ?
Same here. It's growing in my neighbour's laurel hedge, and crawls over into my beech hedge. I just keep yanking it out. In the hot weather it grows incredibly fast - in a day it can put on half a metre, easily.
How do I eradicate ground elder? I have tried for almost 10 years and it still comes back! I know I only need a teeny tiny piece for it to gallop on, but this is exhausting work! Any answers are welcome xx
Please, can someone explain the meaning of bark mulch vs wood chip mulch . Did he use bark or wood chips? What to do if we have perennial weeds? Can we use weed barriers cloth and the mulch on top or what? Sorry I have difficulty understand what is been said. Thanks.
He's saying Perennial weeds need to be removed by hand completely before applying mulch. Removing them and their roots is the only way to win. I've tried cardboard/paper/grass mulches but they always come back. Work on a small section at a time and remove completely.
OK but what do you do about the seeds you WANT to grow, the things that self seed? At what time of year is it best to put down bark so that the self seeding plantlets can grow?
So, I found a 50 foot roll of weed control matting on sale. And I wanted bark on top. However, you discouraged putting weed barriers down with with this stuff. How come? Bark looks good in planters.
Weed control barriers have their uses but I don’t use them as I am always chopping and changing plants in my beds and the weed barriers just get in the way.
I found that weed killer never actually kills the plants... they just kill foliage... so the only viable solution I’ve found is making the path/driveway of pebbles/gravel much deeper, usually 6+ inches. Even if the weed seeds germinate then the weeds come out very easily since the gravel/pebble doesn’t hold their roots well.
Pull what you can like thistle realizing it is popping up from a rhizome. Dig what you can with you pointed Sneeboer spade like dandelions. Cover what you can with cardboard and coffee grounds.
Is there anything you can do to stop birds pulling the bark up and throwing it wherever? I have my bedding next to my lawn and I'm constantly having to pick the bark from the grass
Unfortunately cats also kill native birds, whether on the ground or in trees. I'd suggest curly bark varieties if you can find it. Apparently some birds don't like it wrapping around their legs.
What’s that pretty weed.? Grows very fast with red stalks. It’s the worst weed in my garden. I think it’s because years ago I nursed the first one, thinking it was a pretty plant. 🤣
This man is brilliant.! What a star.. And he identified weeds that could be re-potted elsewhere as actual plants.. and even ate them.. Brilliant lol

Love this - very informative. You always make me smile John.
excellent video and I agree about the bark chips. They do pay for themselves
Lol, "There will always be weeds, like taxes and death." Great video, thanks.
thank-you. You are right and funny not many channels talk about controlling weeds. appreciate your detailed video. :)
New subscriber - love the sensible, useful down to earth advice and delivery style man 👌👌👌
Mr Lord, I love your videos! I have a Colonial garden in the countryside of New Zealand. Your videos are so useful.

Great video, and an obvious passion for the subject matter.

Great video . Who is the supplier of the bark you are using ? I was not able to read it off the bags .

I have the same problem

Thanks
What about adding ground cover plants ? .
Can I put mulch around Laurel's
Makes sense
What type of bark do you use? ( pine or different trees)
Doesn't matter. They all can perform well

What about bindweed???
Please, can someone explain the meaning of bark mulch vs wood chip mulch .

Bark mulch is darker which is good to keep the light out. Wood chip is lighter and made from small branches and the wood of the tree

What is the best way to get rid of japanese knotweed, without using chemicals... ive been digging it up , roots and all and still keep coming lol
Many thanks.
Wonderful advice, can I ask if I can place cobblestones onto bark chipping? I just put down a layer of bark but worried about foxes.

Brambles I’d need to dig out first wouldn’t I?
I FORGOT WHAT I STRTED TO ASK ???? how do u keep weeds down on your gravel paths
Diesel
My driveway is pepples and every year we have to use a very strong weed killer for horsemare. There’s nothing that kills it.
I found that weed killer never actually kills the plants... they just kill foliage... so the only viable solution I’ve found is making the path/driveway of pebbles/gravel much deeper, usually 6+ inches. Did he say Like taxes and death we’ll always have weeds lol
Woodglut has a lot of designs to choose from.
You know, one man's weed is another man's food.
There are some weeds that are actually edible.
Is there anything you can do to stop birds pulling the bark up and throwing it wherever? I have my bedding next to my lawn and I'm constantly having to pick the bark from the grass
Get a cat!!
They love it when birds screw around on the ground!!
Unfortunately cats also kill native birds, whether on the ground or in trees.

Wild geranium?
Is that why there was not really an Irish Potato famine, you forgot where they were planted and the weeds covered them up.
