I would have solvent welded the broken one. Been doing that a bit lately ever since I discovered PMMA S-Polybond. It is insanely good. Even on PLA it doesn't actually glue, it is a solvent that dissolves the top-layer of the plastic (different sorts too, acrylic, pla, etc) and when it evaporates a few seconds later the plastic hardens up again and makes an insanely strong bond. Only thing you have to remember is that it does not fill gaps, the two parts have to touch. It has the consistency of water so it can creep into cracks easily too.
Interesting. I looked up the datasheet. Normally I use MEK (butanon/methylethylketone) for this, but S-Polybond is methylacetate with a tiny bit of methanol (
I commented about this in EEVBLOG years ago. Mine failed after 6 months. I was able to get a new one out of the supplier. I was really surprised how flimsy and weak the main working part in these blowers is. I tried without success to get replacement parts from the manufacturer and was blown off. Where did you order the blower fan from?

I am wondering if this air pump can be replaced with a 110V air mattress inflator pump ? Its size looks like can fit in there, it is cheap and widely available in places like Walmart.
Random question - Did you get IC shaped heads for the unit? I've been thinking about getting a couple for my unit (not the same as yours, just some random hot air unit) - Wondering if you did and if so what your thoughts are on them.
I know it is possible to get them as I had looked at them at one point, but then I remembered that I'm too lazy to change them out LOL, I would have thought they would be good to use on larger QFP IC's.
With how much these quick hot air stations cost, I would've expected the blower impeller to be better quality than that. Why use such brittle thin plastic then bodge on an aluminium plate . Even a single piece of injection molded ABS would've been stronger. An impeller made of aluminium would've been even better. The impellers in vacuum cleaners are aluminium.
3d-printers are so great for those one-off plastic replace parts! (and so great for making custom enclosures that everyone making electronics needs or finds at least usefull) I make a lot of one-off stuff. The last part I printed was a one-off holder where I can clip a snow shovel on. Bought one general clip on holder, but it was of unsuitable size and I printed a better one that fit the wall better with that exact shovel..
Seems like a widespread issue if there are multiple files on 3D printing sites... Perhaps the plastic was too hot or the mold was too cool or both and there was a lot of stress in the material as it cooled down. Also why did they use some PC? If they would use ABS which is softer it probably wouldn't crack. Or even better use PBT with addition of CF.
Greetings from argentina, I just ended up here, as I was doing some repairs tonight and suddenly heard an explosion coming from the unit. first I thought would be some PTC exploded or fuse, but to my surprise the impellers was borken in pieces. Will try to glue it with cyanoacrilate. But I'd like to 3d print from the designs , which one works better? thanks again
@@TheDefpomexcellent so I'd use the updated sandwitch design much better right?. This it the one you designed. Also I was thinking on trying printing with my resin printer instead of my normal filament PETG what do you think?
Hola querido , como te fue con la impresión ? Pudiste solucionar soy de argentina también y me pasó lo mismo 🤦🏻♂️ si podes contáctame así me ayudas hermano por favor
The fan probably cracked because the plastic lost plasticiser, and also yes the flow lines, but likely also poor balance. You probably would get better airflow with it being slightly smaller diameter, as that then allows higher flow in the outside area, which, to work well, should be a constantly expanding volume from the exhaust side, so the air is constantly being added to the flow the entire circumference, instead of only really the last section adding flow volume. But I guess that was too hard to put into the mould, so constant diameter and poor performance is it, and the resultant pulsation creates stress in the impellor.
Great fix video Scott, I’m looking at a Creality 3D V2 upgraded version, would you recommend that unit for a new person to 3D printing.. ?? Keep up the great videos mate.. 🤙🏼🇦🇺
I have n happy with it, the only upgrade I think it has to have is adding a magnetic sheet on top of the glass bed, to make it easier to get parts off, the Z upgrade I did recently is also nice, but not absolutely required.
That's the spirit, well done! Also I can never get small holes to print to size either. If I want 3mm hole I need to sketch it at like 5.5 or something, or print with enough shells to give some meat to drill it out a little, or just print it solid and drill from scratch.

Great repair vid! Now that you have plenty of blower motor parts, the blower motor won't be the next thing to fail on the unit... ;)
That is usually how it works
I suspect that is stress cracking caused by solvent vapors getting sucked in through the fan.

It could have made been made better.
Since you're happy to glue the impeller, why not glue the original one back together?
It was a stress fracture, it will crack again.
