  • Early in his career, Dvořák had worked on a cello concerto, but he did not
feel that it was successful and he was reluctant to try again, because he doubted the potential of the cello as concerto solo instrument. While in New York, however, he heard a cello concerto by one of the teachers at the Conservatory, Victor Herbert, and was inspired to try again. His Cello Concerto in B minor was the result. In contrast to some concertos that are virtuoso showpieces for the soloist with orchestral accompaniment, this is a large-scale work in which orchestra and soloist form an integral whole. The first movement is constructed around two main themes, of which the second, stated by solo horn, was one of the composer’s favorites. The second movement incorporates the melody from Dvořák’s song, Leave me alone. This was a favorite of his beloved sister-in-law, Josefina Kaunitzova, who was ill at the time of the concerto’s composition. The same melody returns near the end of the energetic finale.
