I've eaten quite healthy for a few years now, mostly whole foods and organic where I can, but I've always had a weakness for crisps. Since I started salting my food about a year ago, the power to resist crisps is way stronger now. It was most certainly a salt craving I never knew about. It all makes so much sense now. Also being mostly keto requires more salt on average, as Dr. Berg has said in previous videos.
I believe you said something about with Addison’s disease drinking water all through the day because we need more sodium because I have Addison’s disease. I really don’t know how much I need salt but I really appreciate this video because it does help me to try to pay attention not to drink too much water.

@user-vk4vw4le1c I grow my own.. Sometimes I purchase from my local grocery store any brand is okay as long as it's organic. All celery has a natural salt and electrolyte
I have been eating so much salt. about a teaspoon a day but I only eat pink mineral salt as I eat a very clean keto diet. I have been keto for almost a year. My b p is on the low side. I just crave it. I can hardly get my food salty enough for my taste. I put about a quarter teaspoon in my bone broth alone. Pink mineral salt doesn't taste very salty to me. It seems weaker than table salt
Hi Dr Berg could you please do an update video on this topic of Low Serum Sodium in Blood. How do you increase your serum sodium level and keep it in the normal range. For example if a person is at 135 mmol/l how can you keep it that way or increase it slightly to avoid any issues? Thanks

I'm confused-how does low sodium cause edema, congestive heart failure- conditions that we have to caution people about taking in too much salt? Am I just not hearing it right, or is their a connection between low sodium & these conditions (we were taught they are CAUSED in part, by too much sodium)?
@@ramonalouise7039 It's been found that people with heart failure have too high of levels of Aldosterone and too low of levels of DHEA in the heart. Do some research on it then ask your doctor to try something to lower Aldosterone levels such as an ARB like Losartan, Telmisartan, etc or Spironolactone. Then you can try supplementing with DHEA to bring your levels back up to bring things back into balance. Have your doctor look into this.

Same. I've been eating a no salt diet for almost 3 years, thinking I'd get enough from food and lately I was experiencing these symptoms. For the past couple of days I've been adding up to 1/2 tsp of Celtic sea salt and am feeling much better. I take my health serious and I don't want to cause problems over something so simple to fix.
Would you have any idea how much sodium I would need while on Prednisone? I take 5mg a day for medical purposes and want to stave off moon face and weight gain. Thanks

To get 1-1.2 grams of sodium you need to consume 3 - 5 grams of salt (whether its table salt, himalayan, sea, etc). Which is about 1 to 2 teaspoons of salt. If you sweat, drink or take caffeine, or on diuretics, the amount you need goes way up.
My brother does not believe that after I had hip replacement, my nephrologist put me on 4.25% dialysate 4 times a day, and after being in the hospital 5 days (under anesthesia, morphine, pain killers, etc.) that my later diagnosed hyponatremia caused me to be incoherent, confused, irritable and unable to know what was going around me when I was prematurely released from the hospital. Because of my ESRD, and the 4.25% dialysate, the vomitting and dehydration, I have no memory of coming home from the hospital and for the next 4-5 days. I was readmitted thru the ER after falling, and it was then that the ER tests proved I had extremely low blood sodium.
During the day I drink alot of water. I also take a diuretic. During the summer I drink about 6 to 8 16 ounce bottles aday. Thats when I run into my problems. Now and then I crave salt.
I’m a little confused. My doctor told me today that I have a very low sodium result from my bloodwork. I also have had high blood pressure for the last two months. She’s had me come in for a check up for those two months.
Because they aren’t exactly related. Your cells are not getting all the minerals they need to dilate and contract properly causing high blood pressure. You are essential deficient in something which is likely sodium.

My sodium level was way below normal and blood pressure way above normal at the time of stroke according to my blood test results from hospital.
Do you have a thyroid issue? Just curious. I have low sodium and chloride and I have seen scientific peer reviewed journals about people who have hypothyroidism will also be low in the exact same 3 areas you mentioned. I am low in 2 but I take potassium.
@@selenahayes7244 Thank You. I will research it. It never occurred to me to check my Thyroid.
@@rayarjomand6533 Seems it's getting more and more common of a problem these days, might be worth checking into.

Our yoga guru says that sipping water constantly is a bad idea because it can dilute essential chemicals in the body. He too says you should drink only when thirsty. He recommends that you satisfy your thirst plus 10% and that you swig, don’t sip the water.

I couldn't agree with you more. It could be very dangerous if you do not have the right salt intake & drink too much water. There has to be a balance.
I believe you said something about with Addison’s disease drinking water all through the day because we need more sodium because I have Addison’s disease. I really don’t know how much I need salt but I really appreciate this video because it does help me to try to pay attention not to drink too much water.
I always have had high b.p. So I thought salt needed to be cut out of my diet. But recently I. Hospital I was given a bp drug which made me feel too I’ll, because it robbed my body if salt. So where do we go now? 3:20
Right on point!!! As always!
Can you please recommend how much NA in teaspoons to take on an intermittent diet and also maybe a good electrolyte replacement ? Thanks for all you do.....LOVE the videos.
I love LMNT for electrolytes.
Thank you I will slow down on my water intake really good info as always 🥰
thanks doc, i am now consuming about 2-3grams of himalayan salt. I am a vegan i do a high carb low fat diet its all whole foods i was restricting my sodium less than 1 gram i exercise daily. My blood work is good my cholesterol is at 112 and HDL is 42 but was experiencing dizziness and hypotension episode thought i was going to die since i had blurred vision, but after that a nutritionist recommended to boost my sodium which i did and now I feel normal it had help consuming himalayan salt about 2.5 grams/daily is the sweet spot for me .
Cholesterol is not the enemy it has been made out to be.
Remember you need iodine. Maybe get some seaweed… i
This is great information!
Thanks! I appreciate it.
I haven't ate sodium in a while can it hurt your body.ive avoided salt in months I feel weak standing sometimes and headaches and high blood.
Organic Celery ;) terrific source!
What organic celery is good? Does it have salt?
@user-vk4vw4le1c I grow my own.. Sometimes I purchase from my local grocery store any brand is okay as long as it's organic.
All celery has a natural salt and electrolyte
My daughter had it. Thank you so much!
Barbara O’Neil gives awesome info and analogies for drinking water and salt intake too!! Thanks for doing these awesome vids Dr Berg!!
Low sodium is really really bad. Everyone needs to consume a certain amount of salt everyday for the cells to function properly.
So what quantity can one take daily?
@@vivianechukwuka5510 google it even Google shows you to little has some serious effects I had no idea
I love your videos. THNKS from the Netherlands.
I agree with that from Germany as well. Thank you, Dr. Berg.
I agree from Japan
I agree from England. Thanks Dr Berg for everything you do.
Take Sodium Chloride, or Sodium Citrate? Both? What are the effects of each?
Hi Dr Berg could you please do an update video on this topic of Low Serum Sodium in Blood. How do you increase your serum sodium level and keep it in the normal range. For example if a person is at 135 mmol/l how can you keep it that way or increase it slightly to avoid any issues? Thanks
I love you Dr. Berg. You are so intelligent. Thank you for sharing your information.
My grandmother was not able to sleep for whole night for few nights and after few days she was diagnosed with very low sodium level. Is the low sodium level was causing a sleep problem for her?
Yes it gives you Anxiety night swests insomnia and during the day you feel dizzy tired sleepy vertigo etc..
I’m facing same issue for the past few months but I didn’t test my sodium levels. How is she now?
0:59 You say we need about 2 to three, do you mean 2.3 to 5.8 grams per day ? (such a small amount?I like salt. And suffer from stiff, puffy feeling in my hands and feet every morning. I guess I have about 1 heaped teaspoon a day.
My mom was feeling very tired, muscle weakness for long time and now Doctor identified that it is sodium deficiency. She drink very less water just 1-2 glass in a day and that created perhaps sodium deficiency…I think not just drinking excess water but also drinking less water create sodium deficiency
PS.
3:05 Are you saying edema is caused by "low sodium" ? I thought edema is water retention due to too much sodium retaining too much water ... Yes ? No ?
Love you Doc .
You are Changing and saving lives!
what do you think of drinking sole?
So... how do you correct this problem??
@DrBerg please make videos for those kidney patients whos EFGrRate is low. cant obsorb pottasium mag sodium... please help

I'm confused-how does low sodium cause edema, congestive heart failure- conditions that we have to caution people about taking in too much salt? Am I just not hearing it right, or is their a connection between low sodium & these conditions (we were taught they are CAUSED in part, by too much sodium)?
Yes I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and cardiologist said cut the salt to 1000
@@ramonalouise7039 It's been found that people with heart failure have too high of levels of Aldosterone and too low of levels of DHEA in the heart. Do some research on it then ask your doctor to try something to lower Aldosterone levels such as an ARB like Losartan, Telmisartan, etc or Spironolactone. Then you can try supplementing with DHEA to bring your levels back up to bring things back into balance. Have your doctor look into this.
Thank you Sir Eric.
Please explain how hypothyroidism causes low sodium in the blood?

How about who have blood pressure? Can you please explain can they take salt ?
Did you get anymore info on this?
Appreiciate the info Doc. What if I added Pink Himalayan or sea salt to my daily water bottle? I work out 4 times a week. Work in the yard as well. Want do you recommend?
My grandmother lost her memory, she doesn't remember any of us ,will be alright pls 😞
Hi Dr. Berg I have celiac and was just resently tested for electrolite imbalance and my Chloride levels came back high but all of my other levels are still "within range" (on the higher end) Can you explain the meaning of high chloride in the blood and ways to get it back to normal. Thank you so so much for all you do!
When I sweat a lot I drink a gallon or maybe more a day... have had problems with dehydration a couple times I dont shy away from salt. I eaven like to put some on my tung every once in a while. So I like to take magnesium and potassium supplements.
Please make detail video on creatine & water intake ,salt intake during its consumption.
So to clarify things to people who are obsessed with fitness: we NEED Salt, we NEED Fat, we NEED Meat, but we DONT NEED Sugar and Carbs. Thank you.
So could I use more sea salt and drink more water to dilute it?
Thank you so much for making these videos sir! Love from India 🙏
In making sauerkraut I add a lot of salt.In a few weeks the salty taste turns to a sour flavour.Do we then count eating sauerkraut as taking in salt or no??? CHEERS from Canadian westcoast!

Thank you for this documentary important video Dr Berg.
You're welcome! Glad that you liked this video.
Yeah I got Addison’s disease that’s my problem feeling very weak. I need more salt I don’t eat enough salt and I’m never hungry but when I have diarrhea I’m losing all my salt so I’m adding salt to my water and trying to take salt water and some water during the day it really helps
Thank you Dr Berg!
I eat NO salt, hope to get from my food, but since I eat whole foods, they rarely have salt. I hate taking supplements, but maybe it is time, I have several of these symptoms.
Thanks Doc
You're most welcome!

Would you have any idea how much sodium I would need while on Prednisone? I take 5mg a day for medical purposes and want to stave off moon face and weight gain. Thanks
Does hyponatremia cause dry mouth and thirst? Because I got extremely thirsty despite drinking plenty of water often and frequent clear urination.
Yes, thirst is low minerals not just water.
I have been dealing with gagging non stop sometimes for an hour for two for a few years. this is still an issue for me. I recently had blood work and my sodium levels were low 134 nl/mg. My My main concern is gagging and dry heaving a symptom of lower sodium levels also?
Thank you!
Excellent
Could u please clarify me doc. How much gram of himalayam/ sea salt sould we take to get 1-1.2 gram of sodium. Its so confusing
My husband had the same issue due to low sodium. he was incoherent and confused!
So they did a sodium test and still did the surgery?? Did you loose a lot of blood when you had the surgery??
During the day I drink alot of water. I also take a diuretic. During the summer I drink about 6 to 8 16 ounce bottles aday. Thats when I run into my problems. Now and then I crave salt.
Dr. Berg, is wheat bran consistent with the keto?
I guess not , but rice bran yes but through a certain way.
Thanks doctor 😊
I’m a little confused. My doctor told me today that I have a very low sodium result from my bloodwork. I also have had high blood pressure for the last two months. She’s had me come in for a check up for those two months.
Because they aren’t exactly related. Your cells are not getting all the minerals they need to dilate and contract properly causing high blood pressure. You are essential deficient in something which is likely sodium.
Hi doc berg , i have low sodium 132 , 44 yo female with type 2 diabetic how can i correct this pls doc thanks much
