    Spitting is actually very common in our baseball games. It’s just as bad if not worse since the players spit openly in front of their fans.

    I’m a Chinese and all of the things you’ve mentioned bother me too. Especially burping and spitting. Spitting is not socially accepted in China and in some regions people are fined for spitting in public. Another pet peeve of mine is people who eat with their mouth open and smack their lips while eating.

    Let me list these five points :
    1. people blocking the way
    2. smoking in toilet
    3. burping
    4. spitting
    5. loud people

      6. (Should have been first), chinese pick their noses (and some pick their anuses through their clothes) in public and some eat their boogers (chinese adults do sometimes) in public. Recently saw a chinese pick his nose and rub his hair after….chinese hair gel.

      7. diapers aren’t so common among chinese and chinese toddlers wear pants that have open crotches so their parents can hold them up in the air in public to poop on side of sidewalk or side of road. Honestly chinese and china are more similar to india in some bad ways than most people maybe wrongly believe

    Smoking everywhere: toilets, shopping malls, underground parkings. spitting is unbelievably frequent. Littering everywhere, dropping all kind of rubbish anywhere.

      I was in China two times - in 2019 and in 2023 and I mentioned in 2023 Chinese people is smoking less then it was in 2019. and it is probobly not coincedance - in metro I regularly saw antismoking ad.
      Probobly Chinese government find out this issue and now try to solve it.

    I enjoyed your Videos, especially its Shanghai from foregoing's perspective. I grew up in Shanghai and left when I was 17 . I too dislike the fact of people spitting. Good thing is, those behaviors are more concentrated in older generations. hopefully it can be phase out in the near future. Keep rolling out great videos Sir. I miss my hometown soooo much.

  • @kiddo817
    @kiddo817 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    Don’t worry, you didn’t offend anyone. Every behaviour you brought up, even most Chinese people find them répulsive. That’s why the government has been pushing a mass “civilized behaviour” campaign for years now (since the 90s), with mixed results.
    I think a lot of it has to do with Chinese society lacking a “collective wellbeing” mindset (社会共同体), the idea that my personal behaviour and welfare is intrinsically linked to that of others around me. Since the 80s, mass Chinese mentality has been the opposite: how to gain the maximum for “me” (and my family) without much consideration for others at large. This basically resulted in a general lack of regard for the public commons, where you often see spitting, loud shouting, blasting wechat on speaker mode in metros, and other uncivilized behaviours. Just my take as a Chinese person.

    • @skazka3789
      @skazka3789 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's actually the opposite. Chinese mentality focuses on the collective: the family, the nation. Whereas Western perspective is no holds barred individualism, with little regard for society at large.

    As a Chinese I agree all of these especially 4, it’s really annoying and disgusting when seeing someone spit loudly. 1 and 5 are kind of annoying too, you can say 借过 or 请让一下 when people blocking the way, but if they don’t listen, you just need to 挤过去😅And also, a lot of people like to play music out LOUD, I don’t even know the phone can be that loud at maximum volume and I wonder if their hearing is OK 😂

  • @zhoujie2958
    @zhoujie2958 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    As a local born and raised in Shanghai, I 100% agree with your points in this video. This is also what I hate about some people in this city. However, I have to say that China is still a developing country which is mostly made up of people with 农村户口(the registered residence of countryside ), roughly about 80%-90%. When I watch your videos, I notice that some people you have filmed on the street are not local Shanghainese judging from the way they are dressed and the way they behave, like squating on the sidewalk, which is apparently a life habit in some northern provinces of China. Maybe I am a little bit "regionally biased", but that is the truth. These people are not educated and cultivated in the civilized way as people in metropolises are. For example, you will always see some courier guys on the scooters driving recklessly or spitting in public. Compared with them, I believe local Shanghainese behave more decently (Not all of them. Some Shanghainese in their 60s or 70s are not civilzed because they didn't receive much education in the Great Culture Revolution staged by Mao Zedong) .
    I am a teacher and also a father. I always educate my students and my son not to cause trouble to others. I believe that is the very thing a lot of Chinese people must know.

    The issue is not being more patient and going around people standing in the middle of the sidewalk or in a doorway, blocking the entrance. That's an excuse. The issue is those people are inconsiderate of others.Chinese people in the US , especially the older ones, are the same. They don't take notice of the people around them.

    I kinda agree with what majority is saying cuz ppl blocking the way is horrible what if u bump into someone when a person has a lot of stuff carrying on them. And bro imagine ppl smoking in toilets that’s so disgusting and that smells bad. And the washrooms in HK and China, it’s so disgusting oh my goodness it’s just 🤢 gross. And the third one, burping around is just so disgusting. Ppl in China and Hong Kong they burp loud and when they burp, they wouldn’t say excuse me when they burp. That’s disgusting. And spitting loudly it’s just 🤮 disgusting. I wouldn’t do that in public. Ppl can be loud a lot. Yeah I think they’re louder which is pretty annoying. But yeah it’s crazy

The spitting is an all time most hated old habit, even before cars were introduce to the country, nothing to do with pollution. The good and the bad habits passes onto next gen. and the people around them. The spitting people should get their health check instead. The video nails it.

    Spitting is definitely the one. However I think it's not just water, they are clearing their throat from 痰. It's more like they feel uncomfortable in the throat for some reason. I thought after 3 years pandemic these people would learn to not do this in public but it's back to the old days. So annoying. Burping actually I never noticed it...Blocking the road is more about cultural. Don't feel rude if you have to push your way through people. Speaking loudly is more of a generation style. The older generation in China and the teenagers in the US speak loudly at the same level hhhh. I used to met a group of US students studying in China in a metro. They were so loud that a student (not sure if a local or a US exchange student) sitting next to them shouted them to shut up.

    Careful observation. I think the most annoying thing is spitting as a Chinese. China has been through big events and changes for the last 200 years. Even the reforming and opening policy has only been for 44 years, while the first ten years of it wasn't successful actually. After the cultural revolution, China recovered the College Entrance Examination in 1977. Sad story. Spitting is not acceptable at all. Burping generally doesn't occur in front of strangers. The others are not big deal to me, but your observation is careful as usual.👍
    But, as a reminder, the biggest cumulative carbon dioxide emissions country since 1850 is the U.S. which has been 546 billion metric tons, whereas China has been 305. It's the convenience of Internet media that gets people target the pollution of China which started to develop not long ago as a global factory. The true intention of BBC and CNN depicting China as a environment destroyer to all English speakers in the world is to suppress China’s development and a part of geopolitical propaganda.

    I have problems with only Loud people and burping. My Country is like that too so seeing it in China makes me a bit angry
    Welp at least their not bothering you on the street or say "Hey Dude!" When they're obviously shouldn't because stranger danger and it's super creepy
    When i went outside a few days ago, A man just stopped and asked me "Can you fix my car mirror? it bented"
    NO! Fix it yourself i don't even know you creep! why the hell are u just coming to me and ask me random stuff like that!?
    Ughhh.... I'm sorry but i have to say that, we need to learn a few things from Japanese people.
    I like China and the people are nice, But talking loud and burping on the street can really drive people like me crazy.
    There's no reason to just talk loud on the train becasue it's a TRAIN! (You can ignore this part i just added it for me to refer to)
    Sorry i talked too much...
    I'm planning on studying in China in september so this kinda makes me worried
    I think China is an awesome country! the landscapes, the convenience, the welcoming of the people,
    the great (Dare i say) Vocational education system (I looked at some and they look very good for me!)
    However there's alot of things that can be improved upon and Winnie the pooh should relax imo

    1、I think speaking or burping loudly is not a bad habit, because we have no standard of what is loud. Also, many western ladies in little dress can be seen as rude to others, can we judge that yet? Receving signals from hearing or seeing are things I think the same.
    2、Spitting and blocking the way, I agree with you. They do hurt other people, no matter on health or moving.

    Some habits that annoyed me when visitin SE-Asia
    1. Lazy walk style. Perfectly demonstrated here th-cam.com/video/dGCxjgj2ewY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=fpx-u5dlv0JfomSB&t=1562 . So many Asians walk exactly like this.
    2. Public singing and playing music trough your phone. Especially in public long distance transports. Some of us might want to sleep or don't care about your music taste.
    3. Littering. It's EVERYWHERE. People just don't care even if there is a bin right next to them.

    If a problem with China standards leave . I love HK and China, these things you don't understand the culture. If my Finance wants to spit in a bin, I let her. People move if you say excuse me. I drive a motorcycle 650cc, I drive to road conditions and culture conditions. Europe, they don't care about you, Chinese people do. I found ally interactions as respectful. Yes there are a few who hate foreigners so to with Europe. They are proud of their National Flag, Europe isn't. No more national flags a hate crime, European one but the President of the EU is not elected. I'll leave the comparison for people to look up themselves. China dosen't have men on women sports.
