  • There's nothing wrong with confidence and prioritizing your own needs to live a healthy life. However, some people take such pride too far and end up being a bit *narcissistic*. But what does that label actually entail? Jae and AleXa dive deep and get even a little spooked along the way.

Just so people don't get confused, a person with the mental disorder NPD and a narcissistic person are different. A person with NPD (mental illness) usually gets it from a traumatic event in their childhood and uses it as a defense mechanism without noticing.

The “you’re my only friend” “no wonder nobody else likes you” “I’m the only one defending you” is an us against the world thing. They’re trying to isolate the person from their friends/family/other people. Because then they’d feel uncomfortable discussing their relationship. They’ll see it as a betrayal and that they should feel ashamed for talking about “private” things.

I grew up with a narcissistic mother. The key is that their narcissism comes from their own deep rooted need to be popular, loved and/or favored and in some cases (my mothers) is indicative of severe lack of self esteem. To validate their worth they'll make friends through manipulation then tear them down to make them feel better about themselves. They usually have an extreme lack of empathy but are good at pretending to be empathetic, they'll paint themselves as a victim at any given chance and will never admit when they're wrong in an argument. My only solution is to get out of the relationship ASAP, there is never any winning and a narcissist will never change no matter how hard you fight back or how much you try to ignore. If you're worried that you're a narcissist, dont be, because a narcissist will always perceive themselves as a saint.

4:57 alexa got the right idea tho, one should undergo some psychological tests to know if they have a mental disorder or not (in this case narcissistic personality disorder [NPD]). one could have a narcissistic personality but it's not always a disorder, or as jae said, "everyday narcissist". thank you jae, alexa and dive studios for bringing this topic to light.

Recovering from abusive narcissistic relationship took toll on you. You questioned everything for months and wonder where it went wrong and questioned your self worth. I survived it and I’m healed now after 3 years. I hope everyone who goes through the same pain can recover too. Take your time and remember, other people don’t determine your self worth. You are worthy💕

Great episode. I worked once for a genuine narcissist, was a nightmare. 😔 Got chills when you read out the stuff they'd say in relationships, I'd run a mile if I ever heard that.
After my grandma died my mum started experiencing her TV coming on in the middle of the night, and she was convinced that my grandma was haunting her. My mum doesn't have faith, but I do, so I offered to come over and pray and I have a good sense of the spiritual. Anyway I didn't sense anything spiritually but I just happened to look at her TV and google the manual. Turned out there was an update service ran every night between 1 and 2 am, and there was a reported fault on it. So we ran the solution and no more night time switch ons. I believe in ghosts though because they're in the bible 😉, but I'm not scared of them any longer.
On another note, have you looked up the meaning of 666. I heard that 7 was considered a perfect number in certain cultures, and so having 666 as the mark of the beast was actually just saying it fell short of perfection. I haven't researched it myself though so I don't know if it's true. Maybe one for your podcasts. 😁
    Peace ✌

  • @minniestagram

Again, thank you for the trigger warning.
What I wanna add, though, is that there are different kinds of narcissism: the one kind they mentioned in the beginning (huge ego, etc.) is the typically known "male narcissism" and the symptoms they modelled the DSM-IV/V diagnosis after but there's also another side to narcissism where you make yourself smaller and more helpless than you are to gain attention, admiration and pity. That kind of narcissism is known as "vulnerable narcissism".
I know Jaelexa couldn't have possibly covered every part bc they basically were just so SHOOK after their first article they kind of dropped the topic (and after hearing Alexa's reaction, I'm not surprised, it must've brought back some bad memories) but when covering mental health issues (and narcissism IS a mental health issue bc it's a personality disorder - if you develop a personality disorder, you usually went through something severely traumatic. You can inherit it, too, but mostly personality disorders develop due to childhood trauma) it's important to see the other sides as well.
Also, I find it VERY relatable when Jae said he's usually very angry. Hearing that helped a lot.

  • @suigetsushark
    @suigetsushark 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

the difficult part about manipulation (whether from a narcissist or not) is that they do it so slowly and carefully that you don't realize you're being manipulated until months later. It's hard because you feel stupid for falling for it, but you also still hurt a lot. Like how could someone treat you like that, maybe you deserved it, maybe you are a bad person. Time and working on loving yourself will help heal it all though. I cannot wait to get to that point where it doesn't hurt anymore.

Just realising my ex was a narcissist as well as a sociopath :') First red flag for me was when he said talking about music/ bands you liked was stupid and he would give me the silent treatment any time I got excited about music, knowing full well how much music was a part of me. As soon as he busted out the 'Nobody will ever love you like I do, you know that right?' I knew it was time to escape.

I just love to believe that people who make great music, has a special feel and understanding about the world they live in. It's like, they translate certain situations and feelings through a song which is then realized by the listeners resulting into these hit songs we have right now. Basically they have enough experience, have gone through tons of emotions and gained brain powers to write a good song. Music is art, what's an artists who doesn't have anything to express.
That's just how I understand the art form

    I 100% agree with Jae at 9:50
Living with someone first should be the norm because I have multiple experiences with people where they are completely different at home than in public. People are the most comfortable and themselves at home, so you will "see the real them" at that time. I dodged many bullets because I lived with friends (college dorms) first and learned some scary things about them and I'm sure they learned things about me that they would not have seen otherwise (my true introverted self). Hopefully the taboo of living together will change in the near future. A lot of heartache, pain and struggle can be avoided.

These traits are actually serious matters and a lot of people are in abusive relationships, where a lot of them don’t realise it or don’t know what to do. When people are in these relationships it’s hard for them to get help, it isn’t as easy as saying “don’t be friends with these people, or tell someone, or get out of the relationship”, so if you guys know or realise that you’re in an abusive relationship get professional help and try as hard as you can to tell someone who’s trusted and professional in this matter

Jae saying that truely good artists can never be narcissists because they always thing there's someone better in the game and it makes perfect sense. I'm a baby multi Stan and BTS are my ultimate group but yesterday I was watching their full Grammy nomination video and this top of their game monster group looked at the other nominees and Said Those artists were a force to be reckoned with. Why I say this is because BTS in general and the rapline (RM Suga and J-Hope)in particular have been called narcissists for their diss tracks, daechwita And chypher series especially. But those things they talk about are things that they have actually achieved and they still always talk about what's next. And I feel that Jae, as a veteran artist himself, understands that Very well and it's one of the reasons that even after 10 years in the industry he's still very valid because he's constantly improving as all good artists do

Watched this knowing that my former partner had some narcissistic and manipulative qualities and although I was surprised at how many of the things I’d heard verbatim, I realized that some people go through way worse.
Side note: I needed a warning for the scary stories at the end omg 😭

Lack of empathy does not mean that you are not emotional. You can still be emotional but the object of your emotion and its direction is only towards the benefiting solely you. So you can be at the top of your industry and be a great artist while still being a narcissist because narcissism does not mean you're not skilled at your craft. But if you take advantage of others or use them in order to create the best benefits for yourself at the expense of the theirs and that would be a sign and such cases definitely exist especially at the top of the entertainment industry

We definitely a podcast on your ghost stories !! I feel like a lot of us have actually experienced those weird stuff and it would be interesting to hear it ! Thanks for this one about narcissism, we need to bring this to light because everyone is narcissist but to certain degrees - healthy people would be able to re focus on other people's feelings whilst the ones that have got issues, like real narcissisme issues, would not be able to. So it's good to be able to recognize the patterns and walk away from them as you cannot change anyone, but you can change the way you react to it! 💜

I feel so lucky learning early on how its ok to choose your friends, and so I haven't really had much toxic experience. Learn to surround yourself with positivity and let go of people you feel are toxic. Its okay to let go. Some people are meant to stay and some people are meant to make you grow, that's life. God bless yall

I'm like super scared of ghosts and it feels good you guys fear them too lol don't know why but listening to Jae story made my really curious about what could have happened!!!! I want a second part of this.
anyways, this is the first ep I listened bc I've finished all Get Real ones and I've been following jae on Twitter for a few months now. I'll for the previews eps and I'll watch the all, very good content and also adore the way Alexa and jae speak!

Thank you for covering this topic. It's really interesting that you guys brought up that you can't really be a narcissist as a musician because of empathy and striving to be better! On the other hand, narcissistic traits are very common among successful business people!
Watching this video brought back memories of past experiences I've had with people, and looking back on it now makes me shudder. Sometimes it's unbelievable how much we will excuse unacceptable behaviour from people we love. Like Jae and Alexa said, let's try to surround ourselves with loving and supportive people ❤️

I honestly believe that as a society we’re becoming more and more individualistic, and even tho that has some similarities to narcissism, it’s very different. For instance, if you’re individualist you believe that every win and every lost you suffer is actually all on you. You don’t realize other elements that affect you and your life.

Hey I think maybe u should confront ur dad calmly and explain to him how uncomfortable u feel and convince him to talk to u in a softer calm way but if it doesn’t work out or u don’t feel comfortable enough u should definitely talk to people around u. Anyone u trust and confront them about the issues ur facing. It’ll be hard at first but I promise it will get better and easier after u give courage to urself:)) I believe in u💜

sincerely, these people need pshycological help, try and convince him to look for help,if he refuses,i strongly recommend you to find good people (outside your family) you can surround yourself with, never let your dad isolate you from other people, also, talk to people that you trust about his behavior,do not keep this secret, that's what he wants... also, avoid talking about things that are important to you with him,he'll use it against you (sounds mean, but you have to understand that your dad has a mental illness, and that makes him work differently then other people, common advice is NOT functional with him, these people are used to lie and manipulate information and your head, your dad is not trustworthy,i'm sorry. also, this has no cure,he'll be forever like that,i'm sincerely sorry about this,it's not easy to deal with these people.)
