You’re iPhone cannot currently be a Homekit Hub. Only iPad, Apple TV, or HomePod. Homekit has been around since iOS 8, but it’s only really become useful since iOS10, and for best experience iOS 11. You can share you’re family to anyone with an Apple ID that’s in the same country.

You an use Homekit without the iPad or Apple TV, but you won’t have automations or remote access. You’ll only be able to control devices directly from your phone while on the same network.
