Such a humble guy, I’ve seen him race at the London velodrome a couple of times, his engagement with fans is wonderful. I was SO happy to see him get that magical 35th Tour win!
Well said, I'm absolutely convinced Cav would have bagged #35 in 2022 if Quick-Step hadn't inexpicably decided to go with Fabio Jakobsen that year, after Cav won four stages and the green jersey in 2021. Dumbest decision ever.
One of the most deserved Knighthoods I can think of. He was/is undeniably the very best at what he does. There is ridiculous talk of Gareth Southgate being Knighted for not winning anything in his entire career. That's rewarding mediocrity and failing when it really matters. Cav has been actually winning, consistently, against the very best, for over a decade, to become the best Sprinter in history .... in History!! Let that sink in.
British public know very little about anything but he did win Sports Personality of the Year despite BBC almost never showing cycling. Far more Brits know something about cycling than was the case back in 1970s to mid 2000s
I've always loved his animated facial expressions. Somehow it's surreal to see the lines on his face indicating the passage of time. I'm happy for him.
I watched his first Tour de France sprint stage win in 2008 and I watched his record breaking last stage win. I’ve never felt prouder in this moment to support a fellow Brit in this sport of cycling, the toughest sport in the world.
It’s because of Mark and Bradley Wiggins that cycling took off in the UK big time. The TOF won’t be the same without him, but he will still be part of it in some way or another. We’ll see another side of him that’s for sure. We certainly haven’t seen the last of Cavs. Being within a team setup or a pundit beckons. Whatever he does, we’ve all been very blessed to have been around whilst he’s been riding. The best race for me will be the time he won the World Championship in Copenhagen. Thanks Mark for years of fun and enjoyment. Chapeau!
i've got to admit i don't know a huge amount about cycle racing, but why is mark cavendish so lauded for the number of stage wins at the tdf? he has never won the event. isn't that what really matters?
Only certain people can win certain races. Those who win the Tour overall almost never win the kind of stages that Cav won (those ending in a bunch sprint finish). Cav is the best road sprinter in cycling history, but to ask him to win the Tour would be asking Usain Bolt to run the marathon and asking the overall contenders to win a bunch sprint is like asking Paula Radcliffe to run the 100m . The confusion is that in stage races like the Tour all riders ride all the stages, but different days give opportunities for different riders. Cav holds one of the few records that all riders can compete for, and one that had stood for near on 50 years.
They should give him a lifetime achievement award. I don’t think Mark would be comfy with SPOTY for a single stage victory considering there will be others after the Olympics. Recognition of Mark and Andy Murray would be great.
They should give him a lifetime achievement award but I imagine someone from the Olympics who wins a gold medal will get SPOTY - possibly keely hodgkinson ?

Van der Poel pretends to be tired and instead of launching Philipsen let the other cyclists pass him. Then Cavendish makes his move Philipsen gets on his wheel without much conviction. Audience is up across the board, Netflix is happy everybody is happy, Lefevre gives Cav a stage to make up for not selecting him two years ago and more money for every team
it is ridicolous how nobody was trying, van der poel in perfect position to launch philipsen turns around look at philipsen and let the peloton pass him
I think everyone should be a little more critical of this guy's sprint antics where he cuts off his fellow racers and sometimes wrecks people. Win at all cost, a Mark? I started watching the Tour a few years ago and at the final sprints, would see his bike wildly swing all over the road and silly me, I thought there was something wrong with the new bike geometries. Nope, it was Mark wielding his bike as a weapon.

What a stupid statement, our track riders get world and Olympic medals.

So pleased for him to break the record, especially what he's been thru lately. Such a top guy

I was hoping that he would score a victory, so when it happened I was truly thrilled.
Congratulations champ
Great interview and very sensible and respectful comments. Summed up Andy Murray so well.
Good interview, cav seems more at peace!
What a amazing interview he is such a lovely guy sir Mark Cavendish all the best Mark 👍
After so many years in the pro peloton, communicating with people, and even racing for Britain, his broken English is still barely comprehensible.
Cavendish will go down as the greatest wheel sucker in the history of cycling.Never compare him to Eddy Merckx.
All sprinting involves (wheel sucking) as does GC riders.Eddy Merckx, as great as he was, had the benefit of racing against mostly cabbage farmers.
I love CAV but he was gifted that last victory by the peloton. Happy retirement Mark.
It looked like he was gifted the sprint to anyone who isn't biased. Easiest sprint he ever had.
What's so amazing is that Eddy Merckx was a GC racer.
Eddy wasn’t on steroids.
