Putin is just an effect. If it hadn't been Putin it would have been someone else. You have to look at things historically. Russia, since its formation some about five centuries ago, was always an autocracy. Whether it was czars, party secretaries or outright dictators like Putin, Russians never knew anything else but autocratic rulers. To them, a democratic regime is scary - democracy feels weak, with its many competing and independent institutions, and and Russia, being a country built on conquest, cannot afford to be weak - so the Russian collective mental says. Now, a dictator, no matter how smart, no matter where in the world, has no way around running a country's economy into the ground. The dictator by definition doesn't rely on the rule of law to stay in power, but on his cronies. Those cronies don't support the dictator for free - they rob the country blind, in exchange for their support. That's the structure of every single dictatorship, since antiquity till now. Once that happens, the dictator is toppled by the angry population - which, in Russia's case, not knowing anything else, puts a new dictator in place. So the cycle repeats itself ad nauseam. Autocracy worked well for Russia in the past, when numbers and land mass provided a significant military advantage, which is how Russia came to be a superpower. That, however, has started to change with WW2, and numbers and land mass are no longer that big of an advantage - good training and technologically superior equipment are nowadays the critical factors. That's how Israel, surrounded by hostile Arab countries with much larger population, continues to exist. Russia, however, is unable to change peacefully - there's too much mass in the minds of its 130+ million citizen that would need to change voluntarily. Which is why, regardless of who is at the top, Russia will continue to pursue aggression against its neighbors. Which is also why idiot politicians like Macron are wrong when they assume it's a good thing _not_ to crush Russia. Crushing Russia will definitely cause bit headaches for the entire world. Not crushing it, however, will be even worse - it will guarantee periodical repeats of the situation in Ukraine elsewhere.

What you speak of is from a military point of view. That's not Moldova's current fear. Moldova fears a coup organized by Russian and Russian-affiliated mercenaries entering the country covertly, using corrupt local politicians to give some semblance of legitimacy to a new, pro-Russian government that they intend to put in place of the democratically elected government. The Russian army doesn't need to reach Moldova's borders for such an action.

This is the same destabilization approach that Cuba, Venezuela and Bolivia are using succesfully in many countries in Latin America. Chile was recently toppled this way, with agents stirring violence during protests, causing economic trouble and eventually "winning" an election and trying to do a total overhaul of the constitution to make the control takeover permanent. Colombia also recently fell and Peru is struggling to save its democracy in the midst of turmoil driven by violent agents and terrorists that use the police response to victimize themselves in the eyes of international media. It is sad how many well intentioned western media companies fall for the constructed narrative.

I can certainly understand the concern from ANY country that has a common borders with Russia. That being said, there's evidence that the Russian military has begun pressing highly trained naval personnel into the infantry as canon-fodder; that is NOT a sign of a healthy military at all.
Putin's hands are more than full in Ukraine; given how much of the Russian conventional military capacity has been committed to that theater - or more precisely; destroyed or captured there - he's in absolutely no position to pick fights with anybody else at this stage of the game. By the time the conflict in Ukraine is resolved it's pretty unlikely Russia will even have the conventional military capacity to defend it's own territory, let alone threaten anybody else's.

Considering that Russia has a largely geriatric population of about 130 million - and that is shrinking every day while the demographic breeding stock has either fled the country or been fed into the meat grinder in Ukraine - it's inevitable that those eight time-zones worth of territory and resources that make up eastern Russia are going to become more and more tempting to Russia's extremely populous neighbor, China. When the war in Ukraine started last year, Russia's largest security concern was actually on their EASTERN borders; not their western ones. NATO was never really a credible invasion threat; China definitely is - just as a result of population density alone. China has more than ten times Russia's population crammed into less than half the space.
The die is already cast: eventually and inevitably the territories east of the Urals are either going to form breakaway republics of their own or, more likely, be bought out by the Chinese. A war over the territory probably won't be necessary; Moscow won't have nearly the money or manpower to manage those territories anyway, let alone fight a war over them. China will be able to increase it's physical size and resource wealth massively just by writing a relatively small check - without firing a shot.

Putin's failure in Ukraine has been pretty extreme. He's decimated his standing army to the point of a ridiculously enforced draft. His fleet of tanks is cut in half. He's expending his missile arsenal faster than he can replenish, and he's accomplished next to nothing. If he's even considering another country before a LONG term rebuilding and retraining effort, he's even more insane than I thought, and that's saying a LOT. Honestly, if he keeps wasting his force in Ukraine, he's going to leave Russia defenseless other than nukes, which is the most terrifying part of this failed invasion.
