    The most British thing ever…
    “at the moment it’s quite low.”
    “How low is it?”
    “Well it’s on the bottom”
    This could have been a Monty Python skit.

    Like a hot stick: In the fall and winter of endless discontent: the sun burned, as if with deadly intent. Come the advent of spring, an ant like feeling of being watched; whereon the element of intent became successively: ever more tangible and ominous. In the summer: the ‘ant like’ feeling presented as one of alarm and foreboding, as if the magnifying glass might ‘focus’ at any moment. Preface from 'Ground Zero and the Children of Kakadu' (gumroad) P.S: that Book One is priceless; it's actually a really great read!

Everything in Europe was about 7-8 degrees latitude further north than it should have been- and on the hottest days, when it hit 40 in the Midlands of England, it was even more skew-wiff than that!

      First step to fixing all this is the destruction of the CCP and the Jinping regime. Your government is responsible for the lion's share of destructive emissions that continue to worsten the condition of our atmosphere. Furthermore, the CCP attempted to cover up the first outbreaks of COVID-19, and kept it hidden from the rest of the world for as long as they could until it was too late for us to do anything to mitigate any potential damage and chaos. The world's biggest problems begin with China. Question is, are you going to be part of the solution? Or part of the problem?

    Question: how do you turn a canal boat around? Where do you do it?

    • @misterflibble9799
      @misterflibble9799 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You find a point where the canal is wide enough, and do the equivalent of a three-point turn. Sometimes you can do this at a junction; if you have a short boat then you might be able to turn in a "slightly wider than normal" section, but in most cases it's a dedicated turning point called a "winding hole" that are placed at various intervals along the canal. These are typically a triangular-shaped widening of one side of the canal; you can turn the bow into the point of the triangle, and then bring the stern around.
      The term "winding" derives from the days before powered boats, where crew would use the wind blowing on the side of the boat to their advantage in turning the boat around. Hence the word is pronounced such that the "i" sounds like "window" rather than "light".

    • @daveys
      @daveys 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They have places called “winding holes”, which are specifically for the purpose of turning boats around.
      There’s a location of a couple below, just so you can see how they look:
      ///transfers.clocks.loudly
      ///pasta.duty.posed
      Other than that, there are junctions and corners that allow boats to turn.
      ///agent.deals.length
      ///spray.likely.trains
      Hope this helps. I’m not a boater but I do use the canals for kayaking.

      @nicholasgarnett 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your comments - I was the reporter. The reason the canals have water in is they do everything they can to keep water in - diverting from rivers. The trick is to KEEP it in to stop canal walls drying out and crumbling, people falling in to an empty deep, steep sided canal, to keep fish, plants and wildlife alive. So they use every last inch of water in reservoirs to feed canals and close locks which use up 200k gallons of water each time they open and close. That’s why the canals are closed - to maintain life.

    It’s not heatwave that’s caused this, it’s the prior 8 months of below average rainfall. Also this is such a small impact compared to Europe - some holiday makers have to go the ‘long way round’. In Germany, freight can barely navigate the Rhine as it’s so low. This has a massive impact on trade - the river is like their M1. Of course the irony is a lot of the great barges that use it are carrying coal!
