He was beaten by a rubberman using sheer willpower, determination, creativity, brute strength, and blood. Even with the music, without those five other things, this moment would not have been my most favorite moment in one piece

This is probably one of the most emotional scenes in one piece in my opinion. You feel that the Strawhats deserved to win not just because they were the main characters but because how far they pushed themselves for just one of their friends. Good work funimation for not screwing this up

I personally love the simplicity of this Before all the different gears and haki and so on. Just a brawl of shere willpower and determination. The build up to this final battle, the context and the epicness of it. Doesn't hurt that they picked the most epic piece of classical music to really sell it. Will always be my favourite OP fight.

Nick Cameron That's exactly my point. "sooo op" doesn't necessarily mean good. The haki scenes are epic yes but for me it lacks the essence and character that One Piece had in the beginning. These days it's too much about getting stronger than everyone else and not the adventure. Just my personal view though.

Just look at the series and when enemies past this point think about Luffy, SOOO many people think back to this moment and see Luffy as "The guy who took out Crocodile". This fight caused a ginormous butterfly effect.
I always love this scene. In this scene, Luffy proves that his ambition and power can surpass that of even the Shichibukai. That he is no mere rookie to be trifled with.
No matter what Crocodile did in the shadows of Alabasta, no matter how secretive he was about his plots and his dealings. It didn't stop a rubber man with a heart of gold from bringing his actions out into the light. Oda is a genius in the way he does fights and this is a clear example of that. This fight is symbolic of what the Strawhats are capable of, or specifically what Luffy is capable of.

I love the Funimation English dub of One Piece. I know people will have different opinions but, can people learn to at least have respect for the hard work put in to this English dub? I mean Eiichiro Oda (the series creator) himself approved of the Straw Hat's voices. Also Toei animation (creators of the anime) chose the voices. I think if the creator of the series approves of a voice or change to something it deserves a FAIR chance before being written off as unable to compare to the Jpn ver.
I prefer the Funimation dub. The voices are perfect all around. I’m especially fond of Robin’s actress. This dub is up there with Cowboy Bebop and FLCL.

I remember this being one of the most of, if not the best moment of one piece (haven't caught up all the way yet) but what all the crap crocodile did to Vivi and threatening an entire country into war that could cause thousands of deaths and the fact that luffy fought so hard he's using his own blood as a weapon to kick this creeps ass through the very ground up mixing this song into it was the cherry on top of this badass scene
Rewatching this scene for the first time in years with my last memory of it being the 4kids dub this completely caught me off guard, I had no Idea New World Symphony was used this way and the way it just continues on for the rest of the episode was a work of pure art. Up until now Zoro's Whisky Peak Massacre was my favorite part of early OP but now this has taken that spot easily I just simply can not get over how well the Baroque Works saga starts and concludes.
How far are you now on One Piece, cause you seem pretty far behind. One Piece has more and more spectacular compared to this. But this is probably the most emotional fighting scene in the beginning of the series.

Like I said in my first comment I first watched the series with the 4kids airings and stopped around the first Funi airings of Skypia. It took me a while to get back into watching because both the amount of episodes I still gotta watch and having spoiled a great chunk leading into the second half. Currently in Water 7 territory and hoping to keep this more consistent now that I've gotten past my last stopping point. While I know most of the important story beats I'm looking forward to enjoying the slow burn through the backlog now.
Luffy's first major defeat. All of East Blue and early Alabasta saga were just Luffy going around fighting random pirates. But this wasn't any random pirate. This was one of the Seven Warlords Of The Sea. We had already seen what mihawk was capable of all the way back when he fought Zoro, and here Luffy was, fighting one and nearly losing his life in the process. This is the man who showed Luffy what the Grand Line is made of.
Thank you FUNimation for SAVING our beloved One Piece. I was watching the original dub before FUNi grabbed it and, though I prefer the Japanese, I love watching the FUNimation dub. Screw English dub haters, they will never convince ANYBODY with a brain that this is a bad dub. One Piece forever!!!

Man, this scene was so bad ass when I watched it for the first time this year! The whole arc ingeneral was such a trip to watch, and for it to come to an epic payoff like this was truly amazing.
To one who's never seen One Piece before, this is ridiculous. To one who has, but not up to this point, it's awesome. To one who's seen it up to this point, but without the music, it's awesome and immensely satisfying. And finally, with the music, it's one of the most epic moments in One Piece's history. Full stop.
Crocodile and Doflamingo are the best OP villains. Crocodile was constantly beating the crap out of Luffy throughout the Alabasta Arc. The moment Luffy's rage overcame Crocodile reminded me of when SSJ Goku defeated Frieza. I'd even go as far as to say that Crocodile is the Frieza of One Piece! Even in the Marineford Arc, Crocodile still carried a menacing aura around him despite being massively outclassed by many people there.
BeatboxMitchel The later fights had better animation, but the later villains aren't as important as Crocodile with the exception of Don Flamingo. Crocodile is still a rival to Luffy, and out of all of Luffy past opponents he's the only one who hasn't been screwed over completely. Not to mention Crocodile nearly killed Luffy plenty of times thus making him more of a nemesis than Rob Lucci despite that fight having better animation, and Alabasta + the arcs leading up to it is still the longest saga in the series. Alabasta = Namek and Crocodile = Frieza. It's the arc that defines One Piece.
Hm I don't know Rob Lucci took every chance he had to mock Luffy for his failures during that arc. He was the wall that kept him from his friend and took every bit of his willpower to beat him. I'd say that makes him just as much of a nemsis to Luffy as Croccodile.

well sometimes it's altered simply because some things don't make it through translation, Puns, Jokes, Idioms and such, nothing wrong with that. Sometimes they use better words then what would be normally used, more highbrow and such.

I just realized something, I think this is the moment where Luffy awakens his Haki, even though he doesn't realize this still later on. But crocodile's attack should have cut luffy to shreds. But for that one moment, even if Luffy was unaware at the time, the Haki to negate the devil fruit powers might have helped him at that one moment where Luffy punched through Crocodile's Desert pesado attack. Just saying after watching this again after so long.
You know, I never really minded the funimation dub all that much. I didn't keep watching the show, but that's mostly because the side arcs got really fukin boring, but I've never understood why the funimation dubs get so much shit. They ain't that utterly bad.
I know. it's just people criticize the voices and say it's so shitty. what shittier is that if they didn't do the voices, there wouldn't be more fans to come. remember everthing depends on statutes and popularity. if they hadn't done dub for mexico, america, germany, even ireland, then that series would drop and no longer run. there doing voices so that kids and teens from all over can watch it and expand marketing and franchise. after that, people can then watch the original sub to enjoy the whole series. so if any of u hate dub or sub, remember they aren't trying to ruin it, they're expanding it. so if u have a problem with that, then go fuck yourself. P.S I prefer this dub fight than the sub cause it has more emotion. but I love both jap and english.
I think people just wanna complain about it being different from the original voices they're used to. I listened to the dub first and I think it's pretty good. It's still mostly faithful to the original but they also put effort into making it sound natural in English. Plus, it's not the fucking 4kids dub. The only thing that legitimately annoyed me was Luffy's kid voice. Otherwise it's fine.
I think the dub is actually really good and it gets better as it goes on. Funimation does a really great job getting different actors for all the different characters and cast characters really well. I just watched Impel Down dubbed and the actors for the Straw Hats have really come a long way in their acting. It was good before, but its pretty amazing now.
Actually eiichiro oda picked most of the voices for the dub himself along with toei animations. And he has stated that he prefers most of the american voices as most one piece characters are not japanese and english (being an international language) fits them more

Here's an unpopular opinion: when it comes to the pre time skip(save a few characters voices) I prefer the dub and this fight is WAY better in the dub

Romantic music actually, makes it even more fitting. Crocodile did always have an issue with dreams.
I remember this being one of the most of, if not the best moment of one piece (haven't caught up all the way yet) but what all the crap crocodile did to Vivi and threatening an entire country into war that could cause thousands of deaths
and the fact that luffy fought so hard he's using his own blood as a weapon to kick this creeps ass through the very ground up mixing this song into it was the cherry on top of this badass scene
Rewatching this scene for the first time in years with my last memory of it being the 4kids dub this completely caught me off guard, I had no Idea New World Symphony was used this way and the way it just continues on for the rest of the episode was a work of pure art. Up until now Zoro's Whisky Peak Massacre was my favorite part of early OP but now this has taken that spot easily I just simply can not get over how well the Baroque Works saga starts and concludes.
How far are you now on One Piece, cause you seem pretty far behind. One Piece has more and more spectacular compared to this. But this is probably the most emotional fighting scene in the beginning of the series.

Like I said in my first comment I first watched the series with the 4kids airings and stopped around the first Funi airings of Skypia. It took me a while to get back into watching because both the amount of episodes I still gotta watch and having spoiled a great chunk leading into the second half. Currently in Water 7 territory and hoping to keep this more consistent now that I've gotten past my last stopping point. While I know most of the important story beats I'm looking forward to enjoying the slow burn through the backlog now.
1:07 is right when Dvorak Symphony No. 9 kicks in and elevates this scene far beyond what Oda had intended. 🔥

Luffy's first major defeat. All of East Blue and early Alabasta saga were just Luffy going around fighting random pirates. But this wasn't any random pirate. This was one of the Seven Warlords Of The Sea. We had already seen what mihawk was capable of all the way back when he fought Zoro, and here Luffy was, fighting one and nearly losing his life in the process. This is the man who showed Luffy what the Grand Line is made of.

Man, this scene was so bad ass when I watched it for the first time this year! The whole arc ingeneral was such a trip to watch, and for it to come to an epic payoff like this was truly amazing.

Crocodile and Doflamingo are the best OP villains. Crocodile was constantly beating the crap out of Luffy throughout the Alabasta Arc. The moment Luffy's rage overcame Crocodile reminded me of when SSJ Goku defeated Frieza. I'd even go as far as to say that Crocodile is the Frieza of One Piece! Even in the Marineford Arc, Crocodile still carried a menacing aura around him despite being massively outclassed by many people there.

BeatboxMitchel The later fights had better animation, but the later villains aren't as important as Crocodile with the exception of Don Flamingo. Crocodile is still a rival to Luffy, and out of all of Luffy past opponents he's the only one who hasn't been screwed over completely. Not to mention Crocodile nearly killed Luffy plenty of times thus making him more of a nemesis than Rob Lucci despite that fight having better animation, and Alabasta + the arcs leading up to it is still the longest saga in the series.
Alabasta = Namek and Crocodile = Frieza. It's the arc that defines One Piece.
Hm I don't know Rob Lucci took every chance he had to mock Luffy for his failures during that arc. He was the wall that kept him from his friend and took every bit of his willpower to beat him. I'd say that makes him just as much of a nemsis to Luffy as Croccodile.

I just realized something, I think this is the moment where Luffy awakens his Haki, even though he doesn't realize this still later on. But crocodile's attack should have cut luffy to shreds. But for that one moment, even if Luffy was unaware at the time, the Haki to negate the devil fruit powers might have helped him at that one moment where Luffy punched through Crocodile's Desert pesado attack. Just saying after watching this again after so long.

You know, I never really minded the funimation dub all that much. I didn't keep watching the show, but that's mostly because the side arcs got really fukin boring, but I've never understood why the funimation dubs get so much shit. They ain't that utterly bad.
I know. it's just people criticize the voices and say it's so shitty. what shittier is that if they didn't do the voices, there wouldn't be more fans to come. remember everthing depends on statutes and popularity. if they hadn't done dub for mexico, america, germany, even ireland, then that series would drop and no longer run. there doing voices so that kids and teens from all over can watch it and expand marketing and franchise. after that, people can then watch the original sub to enjoy the whole series.
so if any of u hate dub or sub, remember they aren't trying to ruin it, they're expanding it. so if u have a problem with that, then go fuck yourself.
P.S I prefer this dub fight than the sub cause it has more emotion. but I love both jap and english.
I think people just wanna complain about it being different from the original voices they're used to. I listened to the dub first and I think it's pretty good. It's still mostly faithful to the original but they also put effort into making it sound natural in English. Plus, it's not the fucking 4kids dub. The only thing that legitimately annoyed me was Luffy's kid voice. Otherwise it's fine.

I think the dub is actually really good and it gets better as it goes on. Funimation does a really great job getting different actors for all the different characters and cast characters really well. I just watched Impel Down dubbed and the actors for the Straw Hats have really come a long way in their acting. It was good before, but its pretty amazing now.

Actually eiichiro oda picked most of the voices for the dub himself along with toei animations. And he has stated that he prefers most of the american voices as most one piece characters are not japanese and english (being an international language) fits them more
Honestly i miss when luffy finished fights like this. Its so FREAKING RAW. Screaming his lungs out putting everything he's got into a million punches to come out victorious. Onigashima is good, whole cake was good, but when are we gonna get a new classic luffy finish like this or rob lucci? :(
