Hi Ian, thank you so much for watching the video. Yes you’re correct about the concrete pillar and our untrained eye should have realised this. Not sure when these ordinance markers were erected, but I am sure we saw a photo of them being used as a flag pole base, even though their purpose was for entirely different reasons. Anyway, so glad you popped by and enjoyed the video. Best wishes, Kim 👍
Hello and thank you for the kind helpful comments. Indeed your perfectly correct. We did however discover that the American serviceman would improvise with what they had, and there are photos of them sticking a thin pole down the centre and using it as a small flag pole base. Best wishes. Kim 😉👍👍👍👍👍👍
An amazing video Kim. Loved the old photographs in the introduction. So sad to see that the buildings are now decaying, many beyond repair. I would have hoped that some of the structures still intact could be saved at least.
Thank you Kev for the kind comments and support fellow Drone Seeker. Indeed I agree with you about saving at least one building. The command centre would have been Ideal to make into a museum of sorts and I am sure would have attracted quite a following. Sadly its not to be as money is the big factor with land owners these days. Have a super week Kev. 😉👍👍👍👍👍👍

To our surprise, my recording equipment picked up a strange ghostly sound 12:50 to around 13:10. Please have a listen to the back ground noise and tell me what you hear. You may have to turn up the sound or better still try it with headphones or a through a TV with a good base range.... Perhaps the drone of B-17 Bombers going over head? Freaked me out. No aircraft were flying over head especially aircraft that makes this sound...! Perhaps it might have been our voices reverberating in the tall building.. who knows eh?
Kim - Discovering History I wish you could pause on TH-cam without the screen going dark! I’m still trying to see what that thing was that flew past at 12:50!!! 🤣
Thank you Jay for your kind comments and support. I will be honest, I would rather fly my drone and do a tiny bit of ground work. Have a super weekend Jay.😉👍👍👍👍👍👍

My grandfather flew out of this airfield in 1943 as part of the USAAF 384th Bomb Group. His B-17 was shot down over France and he was kept as a POW by the Germans until 1945. I recently took my children to explore the buildings and I am so glad that I did now I know that it is being demolished. Your videos are a great record of what the buildings were like. I have read somewhere that the building which you call the armoury was where the Norden bomb sights were kept.

My father was on a US Army Air Corp (Air Force) Base during W W 2 and he ran a ware house on the base in England. And he said the bombers would take off in the morning and come back at night and some of them would be on fire. For some reason I never asked him where in England this base was or what it was called and since he died in 2013 I can't ask him anything now. After we defeated Germany he was furloughed back to Indiana. While back home the US atom bombed Japan and that was the end of the war. Daddy told me that he was going to be re-deployed out to the Pacific to fight but that never happened and he never left home again. A few years later he got married and I was born.
Thank you so much for popping by. Hope you enjoyed the video. Fascinating read of your father's time as a serviceman during ww2. I really do appreciate comments like yours and quite often I get emails of similar content which encourages me to do a bit of research. If you don't mind me asking, what was your father's full name. Perhaps I can do some searching for you. Best wishes and thank you for watching. Kim 😉👍

Obviously there is still a way to go in the work involved, however this will be a wonderful project to remember those who served here. Take care and best wishes. Kim 😉👍👍👍👍👍

Great video, nice to film the buildings before they disappear. The concrete pillar with os on it is an ordanance survey triangulation pillar and is used to measure a high point of the terrain.

Hi Frank. Great to hear from you and thank you so much for leaving nice educational comments which have help me tremendously. I do appreciate these sort of comments as my knowledge of these local historical sites is quite limited and quite often one has to consult the internet which isn't always that clear and sometimes completely wrong. Asking locals such as yourself or people who belong to groups associated with these sites normally proves much better. I do plan on visiting this site again and filming the hard work that has been put into restoring a lot of locations within the Grafton Underwood USAAF Air base, and looking for someone or people to join me as advisories in producing the correct details this time round during filming this documentary. In my last 2 episodes I have made mistakes and had the wrong information to hand, so having this correct info will produce a good film documentary for everyone to see. Thank you so much for the kind comments my friend. So glad you enjoyed this little documentary. Have a great week.😉👍👍👍👍👍
The concrete pillar at 16:06 is a trigonometry point, used by the Ordnance Survey department. Thanks for the video!
Thumbs up ere' Kim, fellow Drone Seekers - really interesting documentary on Underwood USAF base. Always enjoy checking out these old places before they disappear for good. Well done - many thanks for sharing :)
Cheers Shaun for the lovely comments my friend. I absolutely loved filming this place and because we were free to roam as we pleased it made it more interesting. You would have loved it here. We only covered a fraction of this huge complex what once was. Have a super week buddy. 😉👍👍👍👍👍
Great video and edit Kim, superb choice of music as well, fits the mood perfectly.
Thank you Steve for your support. So glad you liked the video. Have a wonderful week. 😉👍👍👍👍👍
Very nice history lessons that should never be forgotten. Thanks for sharing this video.
Thank you so much for the kind comments and watching this video. Me and Owen both enjoyed discovering this old airfield and we only covered a small area. Take care and have a wonderful week my friend.😉👍👍👍👍👍👍

Excellent video Kim with some great history and footage, It's a real shame they couldn't restore it and use it as a museum.

Great documentary Kim. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more in the near future.

Cheers Steve. Glad you liked the video. Yes indeed it was certainly an open and shut case lol. Had an excellent guide with me lol. 😉👍👍👍👍👍👍
U put a lot of hard work into this bud. It’s a good video.

My Grandfather flew out of GU with the 544th. His plane, Look Homeward Angel went down on 1944. He later repatriated June of 45. Amazing video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch my video. This is the first 3 three I did on this airfield. Part 2 is already live on my channel with part 3 having been delayed due to the COVID 19 pandemic. I am deeply honoured to have a comment from a grandson of one of these brave airman. All my life I have been fascinated with the history of WW2 airfields and living with Grafton Underwood on my doorstep was perfect. Now that I have the tools to record and display these remarkable historic places brings much satisfaction knowing I am perhaps preserving our history both here and overseas. I am so grateful for your information about your Grandfather's life here at GU. Thank you.Take care and stay safe and if you would like to see more of GU please subscribe if you can and hit the bell so you will know when my video documentary has gone live. To give you a heads up, my next production I will be accompanied by a couple of experts on this particular airfield. 😉👍👍👍👍
Thanks Kim for sharing this fantastic documentary of this old airfield! A good mix of old material and new from your visit.
I'm missing an overview from the air to see how it looks though...
Greetings and wishing you a great weekend!
Hey there Bertil. Great to hear from you my friend. Glad you enjoyed the video. Indeed the whole airfield is enormous and what I should have added was to fly over the whole site. Hope your well. Kindest regards. Kim 😉👍👍👍👍👍

My grandfather flew out of this airfield in 1943 as part of the USAAF 384th Bomb Group. His B-17 was shot down over France and he was kept as a POW by the Germans until 1945. My father has a small chunk of asphalt from the Grafton Underwood runway, a tiny piece of wreckage from my grandpa's plane and the prisoner papers that my grandpa personally took from the POW camp office upon being liberated. I will definitely check out your other videos on this place.
I recently took my children to explore the buildings and I am so glad that I did now I know that it is being demolished. Your videos are a great record of what the buildings were like.
I have read somewhere that the building which you call the armoury was where the Norden bomb sights were kept.
Thank you Robert for popping along and watching the video. Glad you enjoyed it. To be honest this was our first visit and we hardly knew much about the site even though I only live 3 miles away. I didn't know about the Norden bomb sights being stored there. You see, now I have learnt something new. There is so much to learn about this site. I find it fascinating.

Kim 😉👍
@@KimDiscoveringHistory His name was Russell F. Desch, born 1921 in Indianapolis, Indiana - if you can find out what airbase he was on in England that would be such a gift. Thank you.

another great film kim thank you.i understand the large unsafe buildings being demolshed but surely the control room/control tower could remain for future chance of becoming the 384th museum like many other USAAF
airfields in the uk.
Thank you so much for your kind comments and support. Hope you enjoyed the video. This was just one of three videos I made of this airbase. The control tower was demolished many years ago but the building I think your referring to is the ops building which you will be pleased to hear is going to be restored to it former glory and turned into a museum. Obviously there is still a way to go in the work involved, however this will be a wonderful project to remember those who served here. Take care and best wishes. Kim 😉👍👍👍👍👍
@@KimDiscoveringHistory yeah i got bit confused there, thats great news.i will look into that and try help with donations for restorations.

Great video, nice to film the buildings before they disappear. The concrete pillar with os on it is an ordanance survey triangulation pillar and is used to measure a high point of the terrain.
Greetings and welcome to my channel. Glad you enjoyed the video. There will be another video coming shortly of this airfield. Thank you for the update on the OS triangulation point. During the filming we realised what it was for but forgot to correct our selves in the video, so I am very grateful for you pointing this out to our viewers. Hi there. Glad you enjoyed the video. This was an early video I made, and was still learning about this site. Hi there, First of all I am deeply honoured to be contacted by the son of an airman based at Grafton Underwood. Would it be too much to ask for your Fathers full name?. I would dearly love to do some research unless of course you would be ok to share any knowledge of your Father's stay a this airbase. We are returning back to this airbase at the weekend to do some more exploring and research. I live very close by to this airfield and I find it so fascinating. You can email me on auroradronephotography@gmail.com if you prefer. Thank you so much for viewing my video. If I can help you with anything this end I would be more than happy to assist. Best Wishes, Kim

I live near here and have spent hours looking round there is also a battle hq And a pub near by at sudborugh the someting arms with coins knocked into the beams by air men from the base .A very good book and series of books called airfield focus goes into much more detail and are a must buy for thoses interested. The area has several airfields and places of interest like rockingham with its castle .The armory was in fact where the bomb sites were kept. Also take a look at polebrook kingcliff harrington desborough deenthorpe chelveston all within the area and worth a visit.Deenthorpe is going to be built on so be quick .Kingscliff still has a control tower and a few other buildings and a monument to glen miller.Clarke cable served at polebrook where the movie -doc was made air america he also had a room in a near by village pub brigstoke i think its called any local would know which pub. There is also a gunpowder plot connection in the area and also the battlefield at nasby give the area a look over i promise its worth while and if history is not your thing there is a massive park and funfair at wicksteeds kettering
I have been offered advice from the 384th Bomber group which I am hoping they are still up for it. Anyway, I have rambled far to long. Thank you again for the kind help and support. Take care and have a super week ahead. 😉👍👍👍👍👍👌
