Japanese women practicing naginata-jutsu

  • This clip from The Art of Killing (1978) shows Japanese women engaged in the practice of the naginata, a traditional weapon of the women married to samurai. Naginata were often used by women because the naginata offered greater reach for a smaller person, and helped even the odds when used by a woman against a sword-wielding man.

    just incase anyone is curious, the shouting is called "Kiai" which roughly translates to fighting spirit. It's a fundamental part of very many japanese martial arts, if not all. The Kiai was used as a means of intimidation on the battlefield by the Samurai warrioirs, and also as a way of exerting your "fighting spirit" . And the Kiai still remains in the majority of Japanese martial arts due to the fact that almost all Japanese martial arts descend from the different combat styles that the Samurai warriors used in combat

    This is my favorite weapon, despite my virility. It's like a cross between a lance and a sword that appeals to me greatly. I do heavy damage to my friends during training (using wooden models of course) and no one can get close enough to impact me.

      This was only a weapon used by women in times well after the heyday of the samurai. Originally it was one of the main weapons of the bushi (professional combatant) and samurai (social class) in the most brutal times of Japanese history along with the spear (yari) and the bow and arrow.

    • @notsans9995
      @notsans9995 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fun fact, when naginata fell out of fashion during the edo period, instead of disposing of them many samurai just cut down the pole and weild them as side swords. And because naginata blades have a specific shape, it also inspired smiths to just make a new style of sword to look like a naginata lol

    Eh, kind of shows how dated the documentary is when it says they're training "for spiritual beauty rather than physical strength." Pretty darn sure they're training for both, and a better translation for the "spiritual beauty" bit would probably be something like "inner peace." The naginata as a traditionally feminine weapon stemmed from a period where rival clan leaders were constantly trying to assassinate each other; the heirs of said leaders were also valid targets, since they were morally and legally obligated to avenge their dead leader if the enemy left them alive. So the women of that class needed to be able to defend their families against larger, heavily-armed men, since they were the last line of defense (this is especially true of the wife of the clan leader). This particular weapon was very well suited for that sort of fight.

    • @rekkariley652
      @rekkariley652 8 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      So with that whole "not training for physical strength" bit...they were definitely training for physical strength, same as anyone would when practicing any martial art. Even a women's naginata can be pretty damn heavy, so it's user would need a fair amount of strength, endurance, and discipline to use it effectively. Only major difference I've noticed in male versus female practitioners is that one focuses much more heavily on upper body strength while the other takes full advantage of speed, agility, naturally better balance (due to naturally lower center of gravity), and providing a smaller target. Sort of a Tank-Type Lightning Bruiser versus a Fragile Speedster.

    • @mrspeigle1
      @mrspeigle1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Should probably have a little bit more respect for the polearms, they're going to have a massive advantage in not only reach but also speed and Leverage and that's before you get into things like stopping power and armor penetration capability. If you want more evidence remember for medieval Samurai who are actually hitting the battlefield, the sword was a backup weapon for either spear or bow oh, the sword only became the primary weapon of the Samurai after the sengoku jidai in a time of relative peace when the pragmatism of day-to-day life made the spear and naginata fall into the background.

    I don't think sexism was in this Clio at all given it's time period I'm sure that he was just saying what he was told most likely by some of the woman in the clip on what they practice naginatajutsu. Furthermore there is nothing wrong with anybody not being able to explain completely from one language to another it's not our fault that Japanese has some words that can't be translated in English I have the some problem in reverse sometimes it doesn't make anybody dumb or ignorant to the language it's just that Japanese and English for examples are 2 completely different languages it's logical and natural for some things that can't be translated as simple as "hello"

    • @rekkariley652
      @rekkariley652 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eh, it's definitely got some mild casual sexism in there. But it's due to time period, mostly; it just shows how old the documentary is. And it is slightly inaccurate: naginata-jutsu still requires as much physical strength and endurance as any other weapon. It was used by women largely as a means of defending against warriors from enemy clans trying to assassinate their kids (who would be morally and legally obligated to avenge their father if he died in battle, so a smart lord trying to take over new territory had to make sure to kill literally everyone related to the leader of that clan). That requires a fair bit of physical strength and constant practice, otherwise it becomes useless as a self-defense weapon (back then, at least; not much of a self-defense weapon now).

    The seventies' sexism unfortunately shines through all too well in this clip, with ridiculous statements such as "The desire of every woman is to be beautiful". Even when women traing a martial art, they can't do it because they want to become stronger or like fightning, but it has to be because of aesthetics?! Sigh...
    Thankfully, the footage shows serious naginata training. Really interesting to watch.

    • @BloodofPatriots
      @BloodofPatriots 9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      majnjord You misunderstand the Japanese concept of "beauty". A better word for it is "perfection". Both men and woman in Japan seek a "perfection" in their martial arts training. To them, perfection IS beauty. Check out those that practice Kyudo. The seek "shin-zen-bi" (aka "truth, goodness, beauty"). In other words, "perfection".
      Your ethnocentrism tainted your understanding of this clip and led you to attack it when it was actually correct.

    • @majnjord
      @majnjord 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      BloodofPatriots You can speak for all japanese people (of the '70s in this case) in how they define "beauty", and what they all strive for in martial arts training? I'm very impressed, you must be a great anthropologist/ethnographer!
      Ooooor maybe it's just a bunch of essentialist and generalizing bullcrap?
      ANKF Kyûdô's shin-zen-bi is a thing, sure, but I don't see on what grounds you relate it to the naginata budô and bujutsu displayed in the vid.
      I'm not attacking the whole clip, I'm attacking the silly sexist statements. And for you to say the clip is "actually correct" is just as silly in suggesting that such a dynamic and complex phenomenon as martial arts, with such a plethora of different people practicing it for so many reasons and in so many ways, could be described 'correctly' with the statement "The desire of every woman is to be beautiful". It's a dum statement unfair to every woman practicing naginatajutsu or other martial arts purely for competitive reasons, for physical excercise, for school merits, for fun, as a hobby or whatever reasons there may be.

    • @BloodofPatriots
      @BloodofPatriots 9 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      majnjord The only thing "dumb" here is you. If you knew anything about Japanese culture, which you do not, they have concepts that are difficult to explain in other languages. When dealing with a person of low language ability such as yourself, the confusion only worsens. There is nothing sexist in the video at all. You are seeing sexism because that's what you and your limited intellect wish to see.

    • @OriGummie
      @OriGummie 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +majnjord There's a saying in Japan: Embroidery, Cooking, and wielding Naginata make a woman perfect. This is their culture. Is it sexist? Perhaps for you it is, and that's the point! You can't equate everything to Western standards. It's not how the world works, and it certainly doesn't revolve around you and your culture alone.

      Not at all but it became culturally associated with women over time, during the Edo era (1603-1868) especially. Early on, the naginata was a weapon widely used by the samurai, it was slowly supplemented by the spear in the 14th century. The early naginata were very "manly" weapons, longer with massive heads inspired partly by the chinese weapons, later naginata of the peaceful times were lighter with slender blades and fashionable for noblewomen.
      Nowadays, it's the typical fighting weapon of the Japanese women, but many men practice it in Japan and elsewhere. You'll find many men wielding naginata in traditions like Katori Shinto-ryu and Toda-ha Buko-ryu, less so in Jikishinkage-ryu Naginata Do and Tendo-ryu.

    lot of misinformation here, "being peculiar to the Japanese woman", No, that's a modern thing due to a policy created in the 1940's during 2nd World War.
    "some 4 centuries ago it became the principle weapon of the woman of a samurai family" - no it was not. that's a 20th century myth. The naginata was a primary battle weapon used by men, and it was much longer and heavier than the thin light things typically used today except in the oldest traditions that still practice battle technique.

      no it was not a myth, they were used by women in their house when the enemy attack their home or castle but as a last resort, they were rarely ever used in battle field by women, and samurai men only used it in the early ages. After it became unpopular they were given to the women to protect their house. Its is clearly recorded in many annals and historic writings.

    Greece accepted bisexual relations into their society, Japan accepted women into their traditions and even developed their strengths in infiltration and make up for lower strength purely biologically. Now we just need to combine these into a community without relating to war and martial a-..... On second thought a more developed and equal society bridged and based from and maintained and taught from martial arts would be the most badass step we could have today. let's all join a martial arts club!
    Imagine more civilized and mature people joining in self defense and self improvement activity, it's a win win deal

      Actually, in Classical Greece, bisexuality (especially between near equals as opposed to something done with a slave) was looked at as an upper class affectation, and was made fun of in several prize winning comedies, such as Aristophanes' The Clouds.

    It would be a real nasty situation having a well-trained woman with essentially a scimitar on a quarterstaff trying to make up for millennia of male domination in 5 minutes on my scraggly butt.
