"... that you may or may not want in your leather." Ok, but I have no idea which of those compounds I want in my leather or not.
The video somehow suggests that mink oil is the real thing that us good for leather and the rest are fillers, but I have no idea if that is true or maybe all are good for the leather and they work in tandem to give the best result.

Hi 😃, in general, unless someone is looking to add something specific like durable waterproofing, good oils are mostly gentle and natural in nature, like Obenauf's leather oil.
Synthetic materials like silicone usually aren't great long-term, unless someone if looking totrade off possible fiber degradation for increased water-resistance). Even neatsfoot oil can oxidize over time.

Interesting video. Thank you. I came across it while searching for ingredients for home made leather conditioners.
You may be interested to look for the manufacturer's product data sheets which will list all of the ingredients unless it the product is patented. This should be found on the manufacturer's website or by contacting them directly. I'm not sure of the process in the USA, however in some countries that these data sheets must also be submitted to the government to help in cases of ingestion and poisoning.
I hope that perhaps this helps. All the best.

Hello, and thank you for taking a moment to comment and share the idea. Yes, in the USA they generally submit a MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) which can be really insightful and helpful. Sometimes they only have to list hazardous ingredients specifically, and can otherwise refer to the rest as a "proprietary blend". Some manufacturers give a lot of detail though, which can be great.
Making your own sounds really exciting! Many of the most popular conditioners on the market today actually started out the same way, one person at home formulating a new one, and evolving form there. Wishing you well with it

@@internationalleatherclub Thank you for the encouragement. I'm going through your playlist and am looking forward to the pH video. I'm leaning away from vegetable oils because they oxidize (however castor oil is intriguing) and more towards food grade mineral oil.
      Greetings from bonnie Scotland.

@@ivancho5854 Thanks for the kind words. Some things I learned while researching are that a few popular formulas use distillates of otherwise common ingredients. I'm not sure if the additional purity might help reduce oxidation or other potential negative effects, or if it is in the ratio composition. You'll likely have fun exploring!

99% mink oil? I have 100% ultra pure mink oil by Blue Ribbon Products. Best stuff ever.

That would be excellent if there are more brands out there! The pure mink oil is tricky to get sometimes.

Maybe research what ingredients are actually good for leather. That would be helpful :)

Please, turn off the background music! It is beyond me why TH-cam content creators think playing background music over the presenter's voice is somehow enhancing their videos. We came to hear you, not to fight background music which quickly becomes extremely annoying, distracting, and intrusive. Many folks have hearing difficulties, thus while concentrating on your voice they must also concentrate on tuning out the music; it is very frustrating. Your background music ruins an otherwise exceptionally good presentation.
