What's so amazing about Danny, is that he's so timeless! His amazing comedic timing is not just stuck in the past. He has the ability to reach people of all ages! I'm 19 years old, and I'm a huge Danny Kaye fan! I've been a fan of his for about 9-10 months, but I've seen a plethora of his movies. He's so amazing in every comedic role he's played (my favorite being "The Court Jester"), and every dramatic role (my favorite, "The Five Pennies"), every balance of both, and an amazing man! He is truly missed, but he certainly lives on in our hearts.❤️❤️❤️
I LOVE Danny Kaye! He was my first crush! I have always loved his goofiness and his amazing dancing talent! I could have watched him forever! I really wished I had been able to meet him, too! What a bright shining gift to the world he was! He is very sorely missed! He sure had those panelists stumped! LOL! That was great! They don't make them like him, anymore!
The first time I saw Danny Kaye was in the Inspector General when I was around 8 years old. Since then I have seen almost everything he has appeared in. I wont ever forget his charm and grace, and especially his amazing talent! My only regret is that I wont ever be able to meet him. He is sorely missed. I am 18 years old and I am a Danny Kaye fan!
His TV variety show was on when I was an older kid. He laughed, he smiled, he dance, & always a laugh a minute. Ya gotta know how hard a sell a variety show was to a kid, but I loved watching Danny Kaye & his infinite zaniness. You're still missed Danny.
This was a refreshing twist to the usual mystery guest segment and very very funny. Danny's expressions alone were worth it. He was punking the panel and having a blast doing it. A classic episode!!!
Danny had his dark times. This is when he was unreachable. He struggled, but he was a beautiful and admirable man that reached out and helped many a person. That is what we remember.
I love his voice. Many of the actors back then had such a distinct voice. I mean, I know that today I can tell people apart from their voice if I were watching film/TV... But, back then, it's a as if each person's accents were different... Whereas now, a lot of modern people seem to sound similar... Ohh I know I just sound crazy! Does anyone hear the differences? Haha.
I understand what Kaye intended to do, but the object is for the mystery guest to fool the panel, while answering questions honestly (check out Ann Miller's WML clip- that's the way to do it). Any mystery guest could come out, mislead the panel, and stump them (Kaye did have a hit record, he was a comedian, he wasn't a Knight and didn't play one (he played a Court Jester), and he also didn't play Hamlet). As Randall stated, "It's easy to win if you lie."
Mystery guests come and go, but always the real star of this show is indeed John Charles Daly. He is the very personfication of elegance and sophistication, modest charm and exquisite manners, and perfect pronunciation, enunciation, and diction. Young people today could learn a great deal by studying his manner.
I grew up with the soundtrack (LP version) from "Hans Christian Anderson" with some Sylvia-Fine-arranged songs on the flipside. I have always loved his acting, comedy-ing, and overall personality.
He was actually referring to his role in "Court Jester" when he was "knighted" but they cheated to speed up the process so he could joust and die. How's THAT for irony. Hence the "uh-huh" when she asked "Are you a cheating knight?" xD
Actually - at least according to wikipedia - Danny Kaye was a knight. "Danny Kaye was knighted by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark in 1983 for his 1952 portrayal of Hans Christian Andersen in the film of the same name."
It's also interesting to observe Danny's reaction to the question "Are you a comedian ?" at 0:55 which then goes into an extended funny pantomime routine - that makes the audience roar, but the point of fact is Danny ALWAYS resented being classified as "Comedian" - the term he preferred more was "Entertainer" which is surely a somewhat broader term and corresponds perfectly to his specialty.
Danny Kaye had such a gift for accents and dialects, and making up gibberish words that were meant to sound like various foreign languages. He was amazing. My favourite movie of his is The Court Jester. His wife, Sylvia Fine, wrote the songs for that film. They were brilliant collaborators. I also really liked Danny in White Christmas, with Rosemary Clooney, Bing Crosby, and Vera Ellen. He sang very well.
At 1:57, Tony says to Dorothy, "He thinks it's Harpo!" They are probably laughing so hysterically because the thought passed through their heads and they had already eliminated it as an absurd possibility.
I agree with most people here. Danny Kaye refusing to speak and lying takes a lot of the fun out of it. In this case the panel makes the jokes and that saves it. You would think that Danny Kaye could bring the house down with his crazy voices but he doesn't even try. Tony Randall comes up with the best line that everyone seems to miss. "Is it Sir Harpo Marx?"
@ThingsWeSaidToday I understand. I'm close to 28 and not many people I know have ever heard of him or can easily recall any films he's in. The first film I can recall seeing him in a leading role was The Court Jester, then White Christmas.
I've read 3 biogs and many accounts of DK and notwithstanding the extreme secrecy involved in stars' lives in past times there is no absolute proof that he was gay.Furthermore many actors/actresses had/have crushes on one another of the same sex out of awe and admiration and many act feminine because its a way of drawing attention to oneself( my mom was in the theatre world). Anyway no one can prove it outright and he was still sexy as hell.
Danny Kay appears on the 16 October 1960 broadcast. This episode was highly unusual for it featured no personal introductions or entrances for the panel on this episode. The show announcer simply stated the names of each panel member, who was already seated. Then, John Daly explained that they were scheduled for only 25 minutes this evening, so to shorten the program by 5 minutes, they eliminated the introductions.
They DID knight him in the Court Jester...rather swiftly, but nonetheless, Knighted. And he may have played a joke on Laurence Olivier, which could validate him playing Hamlet...OK...it's a stretch but I just adore Danny Kaye!!!!
Mojos Bigstick very true but in a way they all still sound like Danny Kaye If they’ve seen his movies or shows they could probably still recognize it as a “Danny Kaye” voice and he probably wanted a fighting chance to fly under the radar because he knew his voice was so recognizable
I don't find this mystery guest sequence funny, because Kaye is bamboozling the panel by lying. Sure Elizabeth Montgomery could, hypothetically speaking, convince the panel she was Queen Elizabeth by lying, but the panel is blindfolded, so what's the sport in that? The panel was so peeved by this that they referred to it for months after: when Dorothy Kilgallen appeared as a mystery guest five months later she said, "John will let Danny Kaye lie, but not me."
DAVID KAMINSKI WAS ONE THE MOST TALENTED AND ALL ROUND GREAT PERFORMERS OF ALL TIME. TECHNICALLY, HE SORTA DIDNT LIE. HE WAS KNIGHTED YEARS LATER IN 1983 BY THE QUEEN OF DENMARK. BUT I THINK WHAT HE WAS REFERING TO WAS THE MOVIE, "THE COURT JESTER". BUT HE WAS HUMOROUSLY SNEAKY, WHEN HE ANSWERED YES IF HE WAS SIR CEDRIC HARDWICKE. HE DID SO MANY OTHER THINGS LIKE BEING A GREAT HUMANITARIAN.
I agree, it was a bit awkward to watch the panel struggle but their jokes totally saved this segment. It's a shame because I LOVEEE Danny Kaye and would have enjoyed seeing his comedic talents shine here but it wasn't to be. Perhaps he simply didn't want to participate on WML. He makes it clear at the end that it was his intention to do what he did so perhaps he just wasn't into the show? Nice to see Mr Randle on the show again! Thanks for sharing! I still love Danny and WML.. =)
Evidently when Tony eliminated Jack Lemmon, he and Dorothy both began thinking, "Who do we know ... who is it that wouldn't speak and is a comedian?" Harpo Marx was famous for not saying a word in the Marx brothers' films and obviously both Tony and Dorothy had the same idea at the same time as Bennett did when he posed his question about working with famous brothers. So they both collapsed in laughter over the coincidence.
I heard that a lot of stars back then went "both ways", the men and the women, but it was kept hidden. I was not like now they like to "out" people. Sometimes they tried to out celebrities in those days but somehow it still managed to be kept secret. But anyway Danny Kaye was a very funny man, he cracks me up!
What's so amazing about Danny, is that he's so timeless! His amazing comedic timing is not just stuck in the past. He has the ability to reach people of all ages! He was my favorite entertainer from his era! Great actor, comediane, singer, dancer, etc.
thank you Danny Kaye for giving me so much joy as a child your autograph sits with pride in my collection.
when actors were actors and deserved the respect..
I LOVE Danny Kaye! He is so under appreciated.
It's his birthday today - he would have been 97 ! and his talent is still as fresh today as always - there is no one to take his place.
His TV variety show was on when I was an older kid. He laughed, he smiled, he dance, & always a laugh a minute. Ya gotta know how hard a sell a variety show was to a kid, but I loved watching Danny Kaye & his infinite zaniness. You're still missed Danny.
Great footage of Danny, he hardly said a word but had me laughing all the way through.
This was a refreshing twist to the usual mystery guest segment and very very funny. Danny's expressions alone were worth it. He was punking the panel and having a blast doing it. A classic episode!!!
Danny Kaye is one of the supreme entertainers of all - all Film and TV time. A genuine human heart.
Very funny..I got to meet Danny Kaye at Dodger Stadium back i n 1965 as he was big dodger fan...What a nice guy too,...
I also had the biggest crush on Danny Kaye ....it was HUGE ....LOVE THIS MAN
Danny had his dark times. This is when he was unreachable. He struggled, but he was a beautiful and admirable man that reached out and helped many a person. That is what we remember.
Danny Kaye is definintely good- lookin'. He is so great in this clip. Absolutely love him!
Danny Kaye doesn't need to be talking to be a comical genius. He just needs to BE. :D lol
What a charmer. I love you Danny!
Tony's laugh is the best!
Haha.
Danny Kaye, always so funny. I miss old Hollywood
Well, at least he made it a challenge!! Lol. He knew if they heard him speak, they'd get it right away.
I understand what Kaye intended to do, but the object is for the mystery guest to fool the panel, while answering questions honestly (check out Ann Miller's WML clip- that's the way to do it). "We all are very fond of Danny..."
Me: 😭😭😭 I love you, Danny Kaye!
Me too 💔💖
I would've guessed from his "mmhmm"s. You can tell!
Danny was genius he could do anything-Every thing he did was superb- he was one of the finest American performers of the past 100 years-
So much fun to watch!... I don't think I ever saw anything that Danny Kaye did that didn't lighten my mood or make me laugh.
Mystery guests come and go, but always the real star of this show is indeed John Charles Daly. He is the very personfication of elegance and sophistication, modest charm and exquisite manners, and perfect pronunciation, enunciation, and diction.

he just has the cutest smile... it's so stupid, I'm 18 and people my age seem to have no idea who he is anymore...
Well you’re 28 now, how’s it going
I grew up with the soundtrack (LP version) from "Hans Christian Anderson" with some Sylvia-Fine-arranged songs on the flipside. I have always loved his acting, comedy-ing, and overall personality.
I had the biggest crush on this man!
Me too. He was so funny and could be so caring and loving at the same time.
Oh my gosh! Me too!!!
I currently have the biggest crush on him lmao 😂
He was simply adorable. I was crushed when he died!
He was my favorite!
He was actually referring to his role in "Court Jester" when he was "knighted" but they cheated to speed up the process so he could joust and die. How's THAT for irony. Hence the "uh-huh" when she asked "Are you a cheating knight?" xD
Oh gosh I didn't think of it that way! 😂😂😂
such a good lookin talented, funny man
I just loved danny kaye
Actually - at least according to wikipedia - Danny Kaye was a knight.
"Danny Kaye was knighted by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark in 1983 for his 1952 portrayal of Hans Christian Andersen in the film of the same name."
Danny Kaye was the greatest!
Tony Randall has the dorkiest laugh ever and i love it!
Thanks. I was wondering about that . . . .
Danny Kaye had such a gift for accents and dialects, and making up gibberish words that were meant to sound like various foreign languages. He was amazing. love the harpo marx bit
XD
danny kaye = super great!
It doesn't matter. I loved his work, and always will. It just surprised me, that's all. Doesn't change my feelings in any way.
I saw The Court Jester when I was maybe 11 or 12. I've been a fan of this guy since that day.
I just love Danny Kaye
Danny Kaye was hilarious in this video!
What an amazing talent!
At 1:57, Tony says to Dorothy, "He thinks it's Harpo!" They are probably laughing so hysterically because the thought passed through their heads and they had already eliminated it as an absurd possibility.
I would have loved to see Harpo be the Mystery Guest 😂 I bet if he used his voice nobody would recognize him 😂
Nice to go back in time, just see these great performers.
i have loved him all my life and continue to do so!!!
I love the reaction when he starts talking.
Danny Kaye is adorable
I believe Randall starts laughing when Cerf starts to ask if the guest has brothers, alluding to Harpo Marx (because Kaye wasn't talking).
@ThingsWeSaidToday I understand. I'm close to 28 and not many people I know have ever heard of him or can easily recall any films he's in. The first film I can recall seeing him in a leading role was The Court Jester, then White Christmas.
He was awesome
a unique multi-faceted performer
"Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen..."
God bless him, I knew about UNICEF, but not that he raised $5M for musicians' pensions.
this is the most fun episode i've seen
Danny Kaye is the best!
Funniest yet!
no television today makes me laugh like the ones then and I'm only 32
A cheating knight he is alright! I love Danny Kaye!
Back when live television wasn't a novelty
Danny Kaye *sigh* I've had a crush on you since I was probably 6 years old.
Wow. I miss this era. No one can compare today.
Such classy fun... they don't make 'em like that anymore
My favourite movie of all time is The Inspector General...Danny Kaye is hilarious.:D

The Court Jester!
Tony and Dorothy are so cute when they're laughing their heads off ! :D Poor Arlene looks like she wonders what's going on.
Court Jester is one of the funniest movies ever. Go figure, it didn't do well when it came out.
He had a huge range of comedy voices - he could have used one of them!
Mojos Bigstick very true but in a way they all still sound like Danny Kaye
If they’ve seen his movies or shows they could probably still recognize it as a “Danny Kaye” voice and he probably wanted a fighting chance to fly under the radar because he knew his voice was so recognizable

love danny kaye
I LOVE to know what Tony Randall said to Dorothy Kilgallen to make her laugh so much.
He was so funny in the Court Jester also. He plays a funny jester back in the Robin Hood times. I kept laughing all the way.
Dorthy was a brilliant woman who died while investigating the JFK assasination.
Dorothy was so cute!
Wow Tony Randall really is Felix lol
hahaha most hilarious WML i've seen yet
I agree, it was a bit awkward to watch the panel struggle but their jokes totally saved this segment. It's a shame because I LOVEEE Danny Kaye and would have enjoyed seeing his comedic talents shine here but it wasn't to be.

"Are You a Knight?"
YES!!!!! He WAS knighted!.......................many years later in 1983 by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark! How's that for irony?

I cracked up at that guess
The funniest thing to me is Tony Randall's laugh.
Stupendo!
I thought it was interesting how Tony Randall mentioned Jack Lemmon.
Yes, Oh YES! He certainly is!
I heard that a lot of stars back then went "both ways", the men and the women, but it was kept hidden. I was not like now they like to "out" people. Mr. Randall is directly related to Jeff Bezos AHAHAHAHAHAHAAA
With all his Talents regarding Dialects and Voices, wonder why he had to lie..lol
.... and no card flip on the third "no"
And he was a Knight of Columbus, too. (A Catholic organization.)
Danny Kaye foi um excelente ator cômico e como ser humano bem melhor!
Jeepers look at that diamond ring! o_o
One of the funniest WML-moments ever.
