      i would like to point out, that in some cases the roman had foreign words from the etruscian in their language, like the most famous word, populus and these words kinda destroy most vocal theories.
      the differences of spelling of the vocals in lating and our expectation of latin could be simply mixed in actual use and thereby random. like the use of verdura or verdure. Sg/Pl, but most italians would use both variants in the same sentence.
      italian ci/ce gi/ge sounds could be from the normal latin or just an italian intonation of the actual senat-principates latin. we dont have clear gramatical rules for the major population and the italian is quite transformed for the ear. (adding h, if the gi/ci rules wont work in konjugations etc.)
      i liked the idea, that the populus of roma spoke with amodern romanic dialect of latin, while the patrician language of the senat remained to be more semi-greek and etruscian for old times sake. they had to learn greek as rich patrician with education. they would use these terms and it would have influenced their practial use of laguage.

    About the heavy aspiration in "certō", I always interpreted that as he chuckling in the beginning of the word, something that causes us Romance language speakers to sound like aspirating certain consonants!

    • @polyMATHY_Luke

      Absolutely! If it were only this word, I'd say the same.

    • @empyrionin
      @empyrionin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In fact a little bit of aspiration on this is tolerable since later on these consonants became ç or tç by means of an intermediary step (probably an aspiration). I believe this was akin to "ae" pronounced "e" by some speakers. I would be fine with that, moreso than the overall Italian accent.
      But then again, I might be biased, being Romanian.

      I don't think that's a great idea. Songs will always have a totally different pronunciation and tone from regular speech.
      The Latin in OWA checks out - as it uses fairly typical phrases. But the exact pronunciation? You can't tell. Aside from the fact that the singers (in all official versions) are probably English speakers.

    • @hundvd_7
      @hundvd_7 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does, but I'd assume that's a product of having to sing in a choir, rather than an accent. You can't exactly sing a θ all that well, so you have to emphasize it somehow. (This really is just speculation, though - they could totally be Japanese, too)

    As an avid CIV fan I loved this video very much. As an Italian I always noticed in these CIV videos that "Th" sounds that sound very linguistically germanic to our ears. The voice actor is doing a quite decent job, but that "Th" is there, although it is not as strong as you can unfortunately hear in many opera singers that murder the italian opera pronunciation (how many times you can hear "Venthhhhhho" instead of "Vento"). Anyway thanks again Luke, you always do a really good job, I appreciate you're not in a hurry in your videos and you take all the time needed for the explanation to be clear.

    Terrific video, Luke. Quick question. In your opinion, given that peninsular Spanish uses the retracted "S," has the "W" sound in words like "huevo" and "huesped" and is devoid of any "V" sound as you point out... would it be fair to say that peninsular Spanish is the romance language that 'sounds' closest to Ancient Latin? (this is, of course, leaving out sounds like "Th" that it shares with Greek and English and the guttural "J"). Thanks!
