  • I am so happy to have been able to take a trip back to the San Juan River. The San Juan is where I got my start videoing my fishing adventures. My very first episode was at the San Juan, and even though I didn't catch anything on my first episode, for some reason it still to this day has the most views of any of my fishing episodes. Since that video, I have fished the San Juan river more than a dozen times on video, and always enjoyed my trips there.
    So how does this river stack up after a few years of not fishing it? Well, I will say the weather didn't support a great trip. I only caught 3 fish, and none were great size. However this trip is not done. After fishing the San Juan River, I drove out to Utah to fish 6 lakes fishing resort and caught some amazing fish! I will have two videos of that trip come out in the next few weeks. These fish at 6 lakes fight like tuna! They are fun to catch and readily eat the dry fly, streamer, and nymph. Then on the way back from 6 lakes I was able to fish the San Juan once again and caught quite a few fish, including one of the largest Ive ever caught on the Juan. This whole trip really was amazing. I caught some really nice trout, and even a bass. I was able to spend some time with my Cousin who I am very close with. Unfortunately it had been over 2 years since I had seen him, so that was great to be able to catch up with him and his beautiful family. I also was able to see a great friend and long time subscriber on my trip to 6 lakes. Bob is one great fisherman. He is 70 years old and has been fishing for most his life. He is a great resource to learn fishing tips from, and even a better friend. A very generous and kind hearted man. I hope to be able to fish with him again soon.
    The rod I fished with this trip was the 23PS from Risen Fly. It is their flagship rod, and its great for nymphing and streamer fishing. It also can be used for dry fly fishing when long casts are needed. Its a fast action rod that fishes just as good, if not better, than many of the $500-1000 priced rods on the market. Best of all, its only $289 for the one I have. They come in 3wt-8wt in various lengths. And they also have a euro nymphing version that comes in both 10' and 11' options from 2wt-4wt. I can say that these have to be some of the best nymphing rods I have ever used. But I also have great luck fishing streamers with it as well. And the reel I fished with was the LW, also from risen. Great reel, with a very very smooth drag. Best of all its only $149, and worth every penny and then some. If you want to pick up one of these rod or reels, go to www.risenfly.com. They have other rods and reels as well at varying prices and all are great quality. Best of all, I am able to get you a discount. I do get a discount with them, and I am able to give you my own discount for your first purchase. Type in McFly at checkout for an additional 15% off of their already great prices.
    Also, if you guys want to buy some flies from me, just let me know. I sell flies at about the same prices as most fly shops, however I really take the time to make them more durable, and also use the highest quality hooks. I can tie all barbless or with a barb. They are custom tied to order and I make sure you are happy with them. Best way to reach me is through instagram. My instagram link is below. Private message me there with your order, or you can find my email on my TH-cam Home Screen. There you are able to email me with your order. You don't pay for the flies until I am done tying them and you approve the pictures. I mail them directly to your door. I also sell fly boxes as well, all great prices and great quality. So let me know what your looking for, and I can get you fully setup for your next fishing adventure.

    Good to see you back. The wind has been horrible all spring....99% of the time I dry fly fish .... bugs start hatching about the same time the wind starts blowing 😫

      Hey thanks, yeah it was nice to get back for this trip. And yeah it seems like that’s about when the wind blows. Lol! On this trip it was around 11-11:30 only an hour into the hatch. And boy did it blow! (pun intended)

    One downside to “knife edge” wading is that you can often power thru first thing in the morning, then when you try to go back at night after you’re worn out from a day of wading, you’re suddenly in a really bad spot!!!

  • @docandry77

    Was that a nice one around the bottom right hand side around the 7:24 minute mark? I can't imagine fishing with that much fishing pressure.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s the San Juan, the fish aren’t afraid of people, they will sit at your feet and feed on the stuff you kick up. It’s nuts. So many fish! And yes lots of pressure, but fishing small flies usually gets them to bite since they aren’t really afraid of people, but have learned (after being caught 100’s of times) what flies to bite. They are very picky with size. If I would have stepped down to like a 28 or 30 i would have gotten more bites that day.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely not a stringer, its catch and release only here. I don't keep fish often, and never keep fish here for sure! HAHA.

    What’s the point in fishing when there are 5 boats and 3 guys wading near you? I’ve never fished the San Juan so Maybe I’m just ignorant but when I go fishing I steer clear from as many people as possible.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree I like fishing alone, but it’s mostly always that way there and I do catch fish. It’s a decent fishery, with almost a guaranteed catch for me and most people who go there. Personally I’d prefer getting just one or two in a lonely mountain stream away from crowds. But once in a while it’s fun to go and catch non stop. Haha

      So a total of three fish, in one week.
      Ive even hit recommended places that are proven to have fish, like spots where it's rapid but plenty of rocks for fish, spots that had wood off onto the side of the river.
      Did everything I could do, got a nibble the whole week.
      Idk, they made it sound like this area of the river was super active and awesome for fishing, a local said he can catch 15 going about two football fields down the river with a fly rod there and back

      @@McFlyAngler oh no, it's fine, I appreciate the thought though.
      But yea, it wasn't the best, plus the trip was for three, I was just a tag along who mainly did a bunch of work and different stuff for three people.
      So, wasn't really vacation for me, also considering the fact that my bum knee is worse now, and I've got gashes on my ankles from the massive boulders underneath the water.
      But no fish for me, as a fisher to another, it's pretty deterring to watch everyone around you snatching up fish but you being the only one who gets none.
