  • In Yugioh a cost is an activation requirement that you must fulfill in order to use certain cards or effects - These costs can manifest in a myriad of different ways; Including, but not limited to: Losing life points, discarding cards, or banishing cards.
    Usually, this is done with the express intent of balancing powerful card effects by associating them with some kind of cost which may make them unappealing for some strategies, but there are some instances in which these costs can be manipulated to be a benefit, and there are even some costs which are actually better than the effect they’re meant to accompany.
    This video is going to focus on the top ten most beneficial costs in the game, why they’re so advantageous, and how some negative aspects of cards can be twisted into positives with some creative deck building choices.
    In YGO, a cost is suppose to be a requirement to fulfill in order to use effects, which is suppose to offset its powerful effect. However, sometimes that cost is also a beneficial effect, so in this list we'll be going over cards that cheat by having good costs.

    Important fact that was missed about Droplet’s cost is that most cards don’t need to be on field to resolve their effects. As a quick-play, you can use it to dodge targeted negation like veilers and imperms. More importantly, you can send your own cards that would go to the gy anyway like spells or cards that are or will be negated by another card on the field, with the added benefit of turning off said negate if it has a body.

    • @Zetact_

      It's weird that Konami says "The card needs to be in the same place its effect activates in order for it to properly resolve, but only sometimes."

    Swap Frog deserved a mention of this video. It being able to bounce itself, or another one of your monsters as part of its cost was fantastic. The vast majority of the time you didn't even care about the actual double summon effect, you just wanted to bounce itself so you could reuse its mill effect on summon. It could also be used to bounce monarchs to be able to recycle their tribute effects. Since it bounced as a cost instead of an effect you could even do cheeky stuff like bounce a Light and Darkness Dragon that had used up most of its negates, without it trying to negate your own frog. All of that being tied to its cost rather than an effect made it notoriously difficult to kill a Swap Frog if your opponent wasn't willing to keep it on the field. It could bounce itself and hide in the hand even through things like Effect Veilers and Breakthrough Skills.

    Magician's Souls. It's cost is literally a specific foolish burial. Plus it's also possible for it's on field cost to be beneficial. Discarding spell and trap cards lets you potentially use powerful graveyard effects. Let's stick strictly to it's own intended Deck for that. Say you special summon it by sending Dark Magician to the graveyard while you have Eternal Soul on the field. You can then discard Soul Servant and Magician Navigation to the graveyard to draw 2 cards then Soul Servant can let you draw 1 more card at least and by reviving Dark Magician, Magician Navigation has a negate activated from graveyard. That's just using cards from it's own archetype.

    • @Lawler50431
      @Lawler50431 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In a similar manner, the new (for TCG) Mathmech Circular. Once again, the cost is a specific foolish burial. It's on field effect requires you to summon another Mathmech monster to the field alongside it to search a Mathmech spell or trap... but Mathmech Sigma can revive itself from the GY if you don't have a monster in the Extra Monster Zone, and they have an archetype Monster Reborn in Mathmech Equation making for a nice package for Cyberse decks (Sigma locks you into Cyberse if you use his effect to summon himself). If you don't need Equation and are actually playing a Mathmech deck, you can also grab Superfactorial (aka, what Tri-Brigade Revolt took notes from). If Sigma's already in the GY later in the duel you can send Division or Multiplication instead to activate their effects, halving an opposing monster's ATK for the turn, or doubling the ATK of the monster in your Extra Monster Zone.
      It's not AS great as Magician's Souls (which makes sense, they saw how nuts they made that one and toned it down a bit this time), but Mathmech Circular's still an amazing addition not only for its archetype, but many Cyberse decks now and in the future.

    • @Tomy_Lightning
      @Tomy_Lightning ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually I think not discarding soul servant is that good of an idea since it lets you chose the top card of the deck and than draw that card if you have palladium or dark magician monsters on the field or graveyard so soul servant can set a card on top of your deck then draw (assuming you can use the drawing effect) anywhere between 1 and 4 cards and it's not even that hard to meet those requirements since magician's souls can send any spellcaster to the grave mean you can send mahad or mana then foolish on the other one then Armageddon knight for dark magician girl and since it's a dark magician deck you probably already have him on field but if not he is easily searchable.

    "Droplet can still cost" allows all kinds of busted interactions, even in situations where its own effect should be negated. Card is busted in any deck capable of taking advantage of it.
    Didn't even mention its ability to nullify an attack during the damage step by sending the card that would have been run over as its cost(even if it was yours because of a surprise attack spike from the opponent). Attack Replays don't happen if a monster is removed during the damage step, and the sudden attack drop can also allow you to beat over the monster if it tried to catch you off guard during your own turn if you have another around to beat over it with. And of course escaping targeted negation effects like Imperm and Veiler is always an option, this kind of interaction is often how people break cards with annoying lingering effects.

    When I started playing Master Duel, the first deck I went for was Salamangreats, since it was the first deck I played while getting back into the game. Something that surprised me was how many people didn't know that Spinny's hand effect is practically meaningless, and would waste their negates on it. I would only use its hand effect for the cost, so I could revive it with its second effect. It's something that saved me in a number of games.

    I know they're not costs, but honorable mention to literally every archetype card with the limitation text "you cannot special summon monsters (for the rest of this turn) (from the Extra Deck) except for [type of monster the deck wants to get out anyway using card types that are in the archetype anyway]" You know, just in case you wanted to cross the streams, but now you can run Simorgh/Union Carrier/Mist Valley infinite-negate in Tri-Brigade decks and Cyber Emergency in Drytron. Droplet being able to send cards that don't necessarily have GY effects is also useful in the sense that you can send another spell or trap you've activated earlier in the same chain; the spell or trap still resolves one way or the other (assuming it's not a Continuous one) so sending it as cost is literally free at this point, essentially letting you turn what would normally be a card just coincidentally on the field into a resource.

      I am 90% sure that the majority of the broken droplets application were never even thought off during the design of the card, for them it was just a negate card with a steep cost, turns out, the game mechanics are actually really favorable to tributing your own card (with very little restrictions on which card you can choose) on a quick effect as it has tons of useful applications, so it makes what should have been a strong card balanced by a pretty sharp cost in the designer's mind turned into a complete shitshow worth 200 bucks

    My favorite use for droplet is in sky striker. If you have two spells in grave you can activate your 3rd striker spell and chain droplet, sending the spell you just activated. Because it hits the grave before resolving, you can count it towards your 3 spells in grave for your bonus effect on the striker spell.

    • @metalmariomega
      @metalmariomega 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Even faster is to just chain 2 Striker spells(as long as at least one of them is a quick play) to Droplet, getting the full effects of both spells and hitting 2 effect monsters with Droplet at the same time. Since Droplet resolves first, your other spells are already in grave thanks to it sending them for cost, and count towards their own condition of 3 spells in grave. You can actually chain any number of cards to Droplet to send them all for cost, as long as there's enough effect monsters to lower the attack of on the opponent's side of the field.
      Once Linkage comes out you'll be able to do something similar on empty boards to get out a Link monster without sending an extra card to the GY.

    a funny part of droplet's cost is that allows you to use face-up spell and trap cards activated on the same chain, so if your opponent activates Baronne or Borreload Savage to negate your, let's say, Lightning Storm, you can use your face-up Lightning Storm to pay the cost of Droplet, and since omni negates usually have OPT or HOPT on their negate effects, it allows you to bypass the need of sending a monster to prevent them from responding to Droplet.

  • @alexowen5987
    @alexowen5987 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    A concept I'd really like to see is an Archetype which uses incredibly beneficial costs and then has downside effects; like, it Special Summons monsters as the cost and then destroys them as the main effect. Just, negating them would make it OP, if they were good enough to even be played... But reminds me of certain Cardfight!! Vanguard units which can call units from the hand as an alternative "discarding" them and would be actually pretty cool in YGO.

      @misirtere9836 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      No, Painful Choice wasn't even in the running. The "Cost" of a card is a very specific thing in Yugioh, where it has to be something that happens even if the card is negated. Painful Choice doesn't send anything to the graveyard if it's negated, so that's not a cost, which means it doesn't count for this list.

    for naganaki, you can banish it from graveyard to add 1 of your banished face-down machine monster with atk equal to its def (which all gizmek are), so in this case pot of desire kinda act as a searcher too.
    for makami, if you have 6 or more card banished, you can normal summon this card without tribute, and then discard 1 card to search any gizmek, if makami is destroyed you can also return 6 banished card to deck

    You missed a couple important things with Forbidden Droplet - in Evil/Live Twins, sending monsters from the FIELD to the GY is important in order to activate on-field effects, and more archetypes may emerge where this is the case (this is why Evil Twin sides Enemy Controller as well). The card can also be used to play around Imperm, Effect Veiler, Chixiao, etc, by sending your monster to the GY so that there is no target on the field. In Evil Twin this is even bigger, since clearing the field of a Live Twin lets you summon the other Twin name and use it's effect to summon Treat/Frost to start your plays. I don't love the card in most other shells, but it is insane in that deck.

    Wild Fire, a quick play spell that sends a Blaze Accelerator and 500 LP for cost to Dark Hole the field and leave a 1000 AtK/Def Fire/Pyro token. While not immediately apparent, this sets up your grave for Blaze Accelerator Reload's Grave effect, in the event you didn't have Volcanic Scattershot in hand, to banish Reload to send a Volcanic from Deck to grave during either players main phase. Meaning you have access to two board wipes on the opponent's turn. Unfortunately, Volcanics and Pyros don't have enough support to improve their consistency so it's stuck relying on generic Pot staples for consistency and its still vulnerable to hand traps like Ash and floodgates like Macro Cosmos or Necrovalley.

    on droplets you missed the fact that you can use it as response to getting your face up monsters effect negated via something like imperm and by sending it to gy you can have it still resolve its effect

    Shoutout to Cards of Consonance and Trade In as an Edison Dragon turbo enjoyer. Their costs are beneficial because of White Stone of Legend and Super Rejuvenation.

    Just for clarity.
    So Cherubini is the best because it basically has the efdect of Foolish Burial with stat boosts to boot while not being AS versatile becuase it can only send level 3 monsters?
    Is that about right?

    Droplet can basically be activated for free in certain deck like Sky Striker, by simply setting your spell cards. Activating them, then chain droplet
