    420HC is not a bad steel, even by today's standards. It is stainless, tougher than 1095 and holds an edge longer than some other steels (when heat treated right). It isn't a bad steel by any stretch of the imagination, but I just wouldn't put in on a folder... Still, that Damascus steel isn't the 8th wonder of the world. Being "special layered" means absolutely nothing. Unless it has like a 20CV core or is heat treated (and sharpened) properly, I'd bet its edge retention is almost on par with that of 420HC.

      When he said Damascus i was dead ass 💀💀💀😂😂😂😂

    • @BigDaddySwingingMeat
      @BigDaddySwingingMeat หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      420HC definitely isn't tougher than 1095. I would baton wood with a 1095 survival knife. I'd never do that with 420HC. 420HC (which is what Buck uses on the majority of their blades) is good for gutting deer, cutting paracord, food prep, tinder scraping, and self defense, but not for chopping through thick pieces of wood.

    • @Metal-xf3um
      @Metal-xf3um หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@BigDaddySwingingMeat 420HC is tougher than 1095, read up Larrin Thomas' "steel comparison chart".
      The reason many people still believe 1095 is the ultimate, toughest steel is because knife makers from the 80s had a hard time figuring out the best way to heat-treat stainless steel, so they kept using “traditional” steels like 1095 while spreading the lie that “stainless steels aren’t as tough” just because they couldn’t dial in a proper heat treatment protocol for stainless steels. And it isn’t only 420HC… Steels like AEB-L, Sandvik 12C27, Sandvik 14C28 and LC200N (all stainless steels) are also tougher than 1095 (when heat-treated right).
      While it is true that, generally speaking, carbon steels are tougher that most stainless steels, stainless steels like the one I’ve mentioned before are tougher than many (not to say most) carbon steels. So, in a nutshell: 1095 has got the reputation it has because it’s got a better PR department. As for the rest: whether a knife is good for all the things you’ve listed has nothing to do with steel. It mainly has to do with how the knife was designed and how you sharpen the knife.
      Don’t get me wrong, I don’t doubt your survival knife made from 1095 is tough and can baton wood for days. But knives designed for hard use made out of 420HC (properly heat treated) are tough as nails and can survive some harsh treatment. (Check out Joe X's video on the Gerber Strong Arm)

    • @BigDaddySwingingMeat
      @BigDaddySwingingMeat หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Metal-xf3um The toughness chart on Knife Informer and Blade HQ both have 1095 listed as being tougher than 420HC.
      That's the reason why most survival knives today (even in the age of super tough super steels like CPM 3V, which is tougher than both 420 and 1095) are made out of 1095 carbon steel.
      Tops, ESEE, Kabar, Ontario, etc favor 1095 carbon steel over 420HC for this reason. I have seen 420HC chip long before 1095 when chopping hard materials.

    • @Metal-xf3um
      @Metal-xf3um หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@BigDaddySwingingMeat The issue with the KI (Knife Informer) charts is that we don’t know what tests Matt (the author) did to arrive to those conclusions. For all we know: he could’ve perfectly taken some random production knives he found lying around and try to make some tests with them, which is obviously bad since he had no control on how they were heat-treated. Even back in 2018 Larin Thomas questioned KI’s info, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he did it today. As for BHQ (Blade HQ): I don’t really know which chart you’re looking at because, as of today, BHQ’s charts position 420HC as a 10/10 in terms of toughness while they gave 1095 a 5/5, which isn’t really surprising if you take into consideration the fact that they used Larrin Thomas’ own data to create those charts…
      In regard to why TOPS (and the other manufacturers you’ve mentioned) prefer to use 1095: they use it because it’s cheap to source and cheap to machine. But I’ll give them this: changing to another steel would be a logistical nightmare and using more than 3 steels for several of your models is already an even bigger logistical nightmare. Hence why you only see a few companies using several steels for their knives (namely: spyderco) and many more using only a few steels (sometimes only 1).
      But the biggest reason why they prefer 1095 is because they know they can piggyback on 1095s reputation (which, as I’ve mentioned before, comes from the fact that many knife manufacturers didn’t really know how to properly heat-treat stainless steel until the 90s-2000s and decided to spread the lie that stainless steel is bad for fixed blades) and charge obscene prices for their knives that way. I always tell people that steel isn’t the determining factor when it comes to pricing a knife, but when you consider the fact that 1095 is literally dirt-cheap and that those manufacturers buy it in bulk, you start noticing that they don’t use it “because it’s the best”; they use it because it gives them huge profits…

    As a knife collector of 25 years... I'm fully entitled to calling you an absolute fool for spending $1,000 for a production knife. Even moreso for defending that purchase on the merit of the handiwork that went into it. For $1,000 you can get a knife built from the ground up to your specifications from some of the best knife makers in the world.
    Edit: geez YT is unreliable. This is the first notification I have received on this comment and I am currently at 2 months, 3.1k likes, and 59 comments later. 🤣 I have collected for 25 years, that's since I was a kid, I'm no bladesmith or old codger. I, too, like anyone who collects to collect and not to resell, have plenty of dumb knives tucked away in the collection... and plenty are damascus just because the first nice knife my dad bought me as a kid was damascus. That said, if you want a really nice knife that is stupid sharp, retains an edge, and is smooth as butter without a spring assist, check out Civivi and Kizer. You can find knives from both that meet high production quality standards at $60-$120 all day. Also, I was a bit of an ass here... and I wish I had been more sensitive. I don't know why this guy bought this knife... and it may have been his dream to have one from this line. Try to remember, at least for people carrying lower end knives, that everyone starts somewhere, everyone is inspired by different goals, and you never know what knife someone's granddad gave them as a kid. I'm definitely gonna make an effort to be less judgmental. Thanks again, folks. This is cool. :)

    I will never pay more than 300 for a knife only for quality purposes and for use. Knives can be made to last and they were made to be RE- sharpened. For instance, buy a pocket knife that has replacement blades. Carry two extra for camping but just resharpen the primary blade if not in heavy use. What cost you 30 bucks saved you many dollars down many years. Also, I'll pay more for whetstones than I would a knife

      It's basically just a vanity purchase. Sure, you can't hammer a lightning into a block of wood and have it work right afterward, but you wouldn't do it with any other knife either. A 30 dollar knife can be built well enough to perform all the basic pocket knife tasks without a hand crafted Damascus blade, and if it gets lost, stolen, or breaks down you can buy 2 more for less than a fraction of the price of a microtech. One of the full sized knockoffs lasted me through the end of summer with regular abuse.
    The third lasted until about 2 weeks ago.

They CNC the extra bits away and the more precision areas, like lock faces, pivot, stop pin faces, so on. After that, the maker takes the blank to a grinder and grinds the blade by hand to give it it's blade shape and it's geometry (basically, how thick it is behind the edge). However, this guy using it as a flex in his videos... Eh. It's not that special. You can get a blade reground by hand from various makers, ranging from like $60-$whatever.

    Sorry but there are so many good knives under 200 bucks - hell even under 100 bucks . . . it just doesn't make sense to spend 1k on any kind of knife. Boker Plus offers an OTF Kwaiken with a D2 steel blade and aluminum handle for $120. It's really good!

  • @shonwooten6550
    @shonwooten6550 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Bruh... I love knives as much as the next guy and have to admit to being a budgetboi because I hate spending on steel. Good steel doesn't need to be expensive. Take care of your shit and it'll last. The $30 otf can only be trash though. A Kershaw, Gerber, or Buck folder/spring-assist at that price would actually be worth owning
    As for stuff like 440, 440hc, or 7cr; You can strop it on your jeans. Hell, you can put a decent edge back on your blade with basically anything if it's not actually damaged. I used to scoff at the thought of using 440 stainless, but it takes an edge in a fuckin blink and is easy to repair by hand with a stone or file.
    Cheap steel doesn't mean a bad knife, but crap construction will ruin the whole thing

      Some will go 200 on a nice large heavier knife, but you're getting much lower rate of return by then, anything over 300... maybe 350... is either pure gimmick or branding and to take people like OP for a spin. Hand grinding? You can get hand-made custom knives for a quarter that price. It's a pure status symbol at best.

    As a knife enthusiast, that still feels like a complete scam, the damascus isn't even that nice, and some so-called super steels wouldn't cost that much for a knife of a bigger size. Also I see no specific edge steel, and Damascus is normally made with steels in the 1095 area.

      Damascus steel isn't even a selling point since modern day damascus is just made in the style of the steel, not in the actual composition of materials that made the OG damascus steel.
      Not that using the original composition would've done much to promote the thing since the strength and wavy-ness of old damascus may have just been more of the materials that made up the steel's work rather than any skill of the blacksmith.
