I mean helping the Portal Master is pretty much just parole for them, and not accepting parole as a prisoner is kinda dumb.
They don't get 'redeemed' per se until they choose to do a specific quest. Remember we aren't canonically controlling them directly, just guiding them

You do end up playing as them after trapping them.
No it's because when you trap them you're holding them as hostage if they don't fight for you you'd leave them in the trap until imaginators where some of them decided to become full-on good Guys
