I knew from a very young age that I never wanted to be the parent that my parents were. I was finally going to break the cycle of toxicity and abuse. My past definitely effects my parenting, but I am so proud to say that with a two year old and another on the way, I am the type of parent I wish I had growing up.

OMG, me too! I always say that I am actually the kind of Mother that I wish I had. But also wondering at the same time if I am mucking up things because I need to be the kind of Mom that she needs! I actively try toe a great Mom and being a great Mom is so very hard.

One of my favorite parenting quotes is 'the way you speak to your children becomes the way they speak to themselves' ... as in the way you talk to them becomes their own internal monologue.

    1. Don't label your children
    2. Trust your gut. You know your kid best.
    3. Model good behavior. They are watching you. They are listening to you. (This one hit me hard)
    4. Let them make mistakes. Avoid intervention. Simply support.
    5. Give them time and attention for a few minutes daily.
    6. Let them be bored and do nothing. It boosts their creativity.
    7. Don't neglect your self-care. Yes and Amen!
    8. Make memories. Create traditions that are memorable.
    9. Listen. Ask questions. Don't skip complements.
    10. Let them sleep and sleep well.
    11. Don't compare. Milestones are not deadlines.
    12. Reflect on your childhood.
Emily, your tips are amazing and I have a new perspective on how I am going to parent from today.
    Love from India ❤

As a mom if a 6 year old boy I wanted to second the labeling tip.
This is sooooo true. I called him shy so many times that now when we get into crowds he hesitates so much, stands behind me, and says “I’m really shy.” Would’ve been good to hear this before I started that!

The positive affirmation/compliment thing rings SO true with me atm. I felt recently like all I did was telling off my boys, so instead I went the complete other way, and started being happy with what they had done rather than upset about what they hadn’t, and it’s made such a difference! They still don’t listen sometimes, but they seem happier to comply, and as I’m not getting cross or angry, I am happier too. 😊 xxx

i’m not even a mom, but today my little sister (according to my grandmother) patted my hand and told her “I take care of sissy”. She then kissed my hand and said “I love sissy” 🥺. My heart has melted into two and I miss her like crazy now, I’d do anything for that little princess and I’d love to have a child of my own one day and give them the best life possible.

Regarding labelling; ensure family members(aunt and uncles) don't label them either. I always shunned any 'labeling' statements.
The moment school called about closure, I knew my only chance at success during this lockdown is ensuring my mental health 😄. Happy mama, happy life.
I'll think of a tradition esp for this lockdown time. Thats a great idea. Thanks Em.

    Thank you for this Emily!
I try not to say ‘good girl’ to my daughter when praising her so that she doesn’t equate achievement with being morally ‘good’ (and therefore when she doesn’t achieve something equate it with the shame of being ‘bad’). Instead, I get specific, ‘Fantastic job putting away your toys, you really helped mummy.’ Another quick tip which you mentioned too is to do things ‘with’ and not ‘to’ your children - collaboration is key and this subtle shift in thinking makes the tough moments feel like you’re less put upon as a parent!

  • @mumof2zoe835

i do the compliments with my son, so if he’s having a bad time with something i’ll always remind him off what he’s good at or if he’s doing well with eating his tea i’ll give lots of praise and he loves it, or i’ll often just tell him how nice he’s been that day and i will notice such a change in his mood and he will be more kinder xx

Very useful tips and information, especially at the moment when we’re all trying to do our best for our children, with all the stress we have. The number one thing that relaxes my child, improves his mood and makes me feel good (even if it is a challenge) is giving him undivided attention/ play for 10-15 minutes a few times a day! Thanks Emily xxx

Love this. Parenting a 3 year old and a 9 month whilst hubby serves away in the Navy is hard work. I have defos fallen into the "no" "stop" etc pattern these last few week.
Another good tip i have had to start doing is leave the phone upstairs till nap/bedtime once you start down that social media hole it is hard to get out off and you miss so much of the day .

This is really helpful! My baby just turned 1 but she already understands so much of what me and her father talk about - I need to especially work on not talking badly about myself or my weight when she's around. I try to compliment her as much as possible so she doesn't grow up with self esteem issues like me.
"How many times have you said something and it's literally something your mum used to say?" this really hit home, though most of the time it's me thinking like what I heard growing up. It's so weird being nearly 30 and finding out through my own daughter how much exactly of my output or feelings are directly from what I was told (or not told enough) while growing up myself. It's like, am I my own person at all or just a copy of something someone once said to me..

Hi, just wanted some perspective here. I've heard lots of people say this to me but isnt praising a child a bit like positive affirmation for them? Like you are good, you are kind, you are generous etc. How is that a negative thing? I've been struggling to understand this for a few months now since I heard it. Thanks a lot.

Every generation thinks they have it the hardest. We have antibiotics, washing machines, dishwashers, air conditioning and heat, cars, restaurants, indoor plumbing, airplanes... Most of all, our children mostly live to be adults. ♥️ I grew up knowing almost all of my great-grandparents and listened to their stories, so I’m 100 percent sure our ancestors had life and parenting much harder than we have it. Take a walk through a cemetery and see all of the dead babies/children from smallpox and cholera and simple infections. We have it so easy. Imagine raising a child in the woods as a Hunter gatherer, or on a farm in the late 1800’s, or during the Middle Ages…Loved the rest of your video. Childhood goes by so quickly. Enjoy!

As someone who was bullied as a child I agree with the advice on bullying. When my mum intervened it only made things worse and because of that I was less likely to open up to her about issues I was having. Obviously if your child is experienced very serious bully with violence etc involved that is a completely different story and would need immediate intervention.

The sound in this video is definitely better so the new mic worked! Thanks for this video me and my husband are trying to be much more mindful of labelling our son. Everyone always says how ‘shy’ he is so I’m definitely trying to deflect from that and use more positive language. I was a ‘shy’ child too and remember feeling awful when people would point it out so I don’t want the same for him x

one thing i read as recommendation and i feel a connection with my little girl - almost 3 years: when i talk to her, i also tell her what i did during the day. random things, events and people but sometimes it helps to move the attention from her but still talk together.

Really enjoyed this, Emily. You seem like such a positive parent! I’d love more content like this. SJ Strum does fantastic parenting tips based on advice/tips she’s read and I thoroughly enjoy this kind of thing. I work with young kids and also have two of of my own, so welcome all the insight! 👍🏻💡 x
PS I highly recommend Julia Lansbury’s ‘Unruffled’ podcast series, if you haven’t listened before!

I agree 💯 with everything and feels like me at my core. Thank you for also simplifying parenting a bit. We can't be perfect and it is the little things that make the biggest impact! I love your examples.

If I'm having a particularly bad day, I do apologise and explain that even parents get annoyed or upset. I've also got better at letting my children make their own mistakes! If I'm not sure about their decision, I'll ask them if they think their choice is a good one and talk it through afterwards.

Thank you very much for this video. As a parent I always judge myself I am not good enough. You helped me so much and it was so nice to hear these types of advices. I have to say I agree with everything in the video and this is not just for children this is for everyone. Everyone around just point what I am doing wrong and judge but nobody say what I am doing right. This advice was just eye opening. Thank you so much❤️.

The one negative to five positives was an eye opener. In particular my 4 year old needs more positives from me. But you have made me realise and think, that I have definitely told her off about things lately far more than I have told her something good 😫💔

Such great tips thanks Emily. Yes parenting is so so hard. I made a few gentle parenting/ positive discipline videos in lockdown as well after noticing some patterns we were in and mostly having difficulty with our two fighting. We are still having difficulties with our eldest who is five and so we're still working on it but it is so tough and often the mummy guilt is so hard too. Thanks for sharing these. Very interesting research points as well especially about how much time we're spending with our kids these days. XXx
