    I love this series and especially the cut aways to life on the street in this video. Your room looks like a great location on a nice quiet street with nothing but burros and paper mache characters (?) strolling by.
    I have to ask - how do you find these places? I am starting to think this could be my worst nightmare - wandering around a new city, exhausted and hungry, looking for a place at the inn (wow, its almost biblical). I guess if you know you that will have to check out several hotels, you can budget that into your schedule (and prepare accordingly) - but the lack of certainty is a bit of a deterrent for an OCD planner like me who sets out on travels with a spreadsheet itemizing every reservation. Anyway, your experiences are inspiring and very interesting!

      Thank you Dan - it means a lot to us knowing you enjoy this series! Yeah, that tiny balcony was such a lovely treat for us.
      You've asked a good question about _how_ we find these hotels. It's true what we say in the intro to these hotel videos: We never book anything in advance and a lot of the hotels we stay at aren't even on booking sites.
      Having said that, I (Jerry) do indeed get _some_ idea of the hotel situation in a city or town ahead of time by going online and looking at Google Maps. I click on the pink hotel icon and take it from there. If a hotel has been added to Google Maps it often has reviews from past guests (sometimes the room rate is included in the reviews) and usually as assortment of really bad photos of the room/lobby/etc. This method gives me a good sense of what's on offer in a city or town before we arrive - sometimes we head straight for a hotel I spotted on Google Maps because it looks like place in our budget range.
      This isn't a foolproof method - not all hotels (especially the really inexpensive ones) are included on Google Maps. Getting a sense of where at least some of the inexpensive hotels are located is good info for us to have because these establishments are often clustered together, like near municipal markets and bus stations.
      However, knowing what we know that not all hotels are listed on Google maps, we also walk around (often for hours) in search of a hotel that works for us. Being that we often have no idea of where we're going during our hotel search isn't a bad thing to us - we get a good feel for a town or neighborhood by walking around and we'll often spot a place to get some food along the way. As for OCD planning, we get that as well when it comes to other aspects of travel - Fiona and I have a bit of _analysis paralysis_ !

      Hi D and Susie. Hotel Espejo was a great little find, made all the more special by the very kind gentleman who owns it. We wish all our hotel rooms could have a balcony (or two) with French doors. ❤️❤️

      Thank you so much Marthe for enjoying our Hotel Espejo video. Having a balcony was such a treat for us. This really was a great little find. The town of Pátzcuaro is beautiful and there are loads of great day trips from there.

    That is one of our fav rooms you guys have shared. Really lovely looking and the balcony was great. Nice footage you were able to capture of the street from the balcony. (And of course great for sock drying lol)

      This is also one of our favourite rooms to date. It's amazing how such a little balcony could add so much to a room. Ah yes our clothes-drying improvisation techniques keep us on our toes in hotel rooms 😉.

      Hi Frank!
      Meeting you (and you recognizing us) was the highlight of our day in Gallup! Honestly, we cannot thank you enough for being so cool and taking time out of your busy day to talk with us. We hope you make it to Mexico soon and we hope to see you again during our next visit to Gallup in autumn 2022. Frank, you and your co-workers are such sweet folks - it was a pleasure meeting you all! You better believe that we'll stop by in October to say hello to you Frank!
      Your Drifters,
      Fi and Jerry ❤️❤️

    Definitely one of the nicer rooms so far. Glad to see you both enjoyed it. Btw, can you tell us more about Neddies the cat who made a cameo appearance, lol?

    • @ACoupleofDrifters
      @ACoupleofDrifters  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That room was LOVELY! Ned is one of the pets we mind during our bi-annual house sit in New Mexico. He is a very, very sweet boy to us humans, but to the local wildlife (mice, birds, chipmunks) he is an absolute nightmare! Of all the critters mentioned, we've seen Ned eat each of them - head to tail - in less than two minutes. This is no exaggeration and we've seen him do this twice in one day...on more than one occasion! Honestly, Ned is the sweetest little chap you'd ever meet! Having said that, our little nickname for him is NED BUNDY! 😂🤣

    How do you guys go about finding these places in a town that you have never been to?

    • @ACoupleofDrifters
      @ACoupleofDrifters  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Donald.
      Sometimes I (Jerry) look at Google Maps a day or so before arriving into a town. What I do is click on the hotel icons I see and that brings me to photos and reviews from past guests; this can be a good indicator of whether or not the hotel will be in our budget range. It's not a foolproof method at all - sometimes the hotels end up being out of our price range, sometimes the hotel has closed, sometimes it looks worse than expected, etc.. Having said all of that, there are many times when we simply walk around town and stumble upon a hotel we knew nothing about - we do this quite often although sometimes it can take hours. Nothing beats returning to a town or city we've been to before and knowing exactly where to go for a good hotel within our price range.

    Is Morelia cheaper?

    • @ACoupleofDrifters
      @ACoupleofDrifters  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We have found that Morelia actually is cheaper. Now we didn't think that back in 2013 when we found it difficult finding a place within our budget. As badly as we wanted to revisit Pátzcuaro and Morelia this time around we were a little tentative knowing what we knew from 2013 about hotel prices in these two towns.
      We were actually reluctantly heading back towards the bus station when we found Hotel Espejo in Pátzcuaro. We were extremely lucky and we are very grateful to the owner of Hotel Espejo for offering us a deal on this room.
      On the other hand this time we found quite a few hotel options in Morelia that were very nicely within our budget. We'll have our Morelia hotel video coming up at some stage. There's also a bigger variety of cheaper hotels in Morelia.

    Have you ever thought about doing the "worst" hotels you have ever stayed at (no need for names or photos) but what to look for, etc? I had an airbnb from a Mexican dragon landlady and I should have known by the way she looked me up and down when I arrived. She provided the wrong address (or the cab driver screwed up one or the other) but I was 2 blocks away with 2 suitcases and a cat. She couldn't understand how I couldn't walk it (there was no name on the building, just a number). She finally sent someone and I made it, but the only thing she provided was one bar of soap and one roll of toilet paper and 2 towels. No regular sheet on the bed, no garbage can, no garbage bags, no broom. The room was pet friendly but the cat scattered some litter around her litter box which I couldn't sweep up with no broom. I accidently broke a coffee cup and agreed to pay 50 pesos for it and thought it was fine. She contacted Airbnb and wanted 1000 peos extra for "cleaning" the cat litter. I said no and got into a week long back and for with ABNB. I was paying $45/night plus $25 for cleaning for 5 days, so it wasn't cheap, but what I learned was, it was the only apartment she had listed, Most ABNB have more than one rental and she had not rented it out enough to get an accurate rating. If you don't want pets, don't make it "pet friendly." I gave her a bad review which they aren't suppose to see for 2 weeks, but I think she saw it got her revenge on me, now I get my revenge on her (Golden Zone, with Oxxo 300 meters away on corner across from Royal Villas 5 star hotel).

      That's a great idea; there are some really bad hotels we still "fondly" remember from our big hitchhiking trip in 2013 and 2014. We've been quite impressed with all of the hotels we stay in recently, however we're bound to come across one which will turn into a bad experience - we'll have to figure out a way to tread lightly with that one if we make a video about it!
      Your Airbnb experience sounded awful - can't imagine being dumped blocks away from your rental with two suitcases and a cat. The cleaning fees some Airnbn hosts charge has always befuddled me because some of them will ding guests (in the review) who don't leave the rentals absolutely spotless.
      Thanks for sharing your horror story - we hope it's at the point where you can look back on it and laugh about it all! Your revenge sounds oh so sweet!

      Thank you so much Darlene 🥰🥰. We haven't made any videos here in New Mexico this time around, we've been fairly busy - we'll be sharing some big news about our future plans with everyone soon! HOWEVER we do have quite a few videos from our time here last year. Here is the link to all of our New Mexico videos from then: th-cam.com/play/PLOJeBLeHAnRAuMboo0QVfimV16LYEATdd.html
      We really hope some day you'll visit New Mexico, it is beautiful here and the food is fantastic. We love returning to this state. It was home for us over 20 years ago and it still feels like coming home. We hope yourself and Ed have a lovely week too. Fi and Jerry (Your Drifters) ❤️❤️
