  • I finally got a window of opportunity and took the chance to do something that I’ve wanted to do for more than a decade - a round Taiwan bike trip.
    This video is part 1 of that trip (Days 1-4 Hsinchu to Taitung) - a vlog style record of my 8-day, 1,116km journey around the Isla Formosa.

    Watched this from Singapore, thanks for sharing your journey. This brought back memories when I rented a bike from Giant to cycle from Hualien to Taitung about 7 years ago over 2 days during one of the hottest period of the year and was very sunburned. Lost my way at one point and detoured, approached a house where an old couple lived by the side of the highway where they invited me in, asked me to rest and topped up my water free of charge. I think I tried to pay them but they refused. And along the way there were people who cheered me on on my bike, I imagine this is a common phenomenon in Taiwan. Thankful for the hospitality and friendliness. Thank God also that my tires held and experienced no punctures along the way.

    When I cycle toured in Taiwan in 2018 I had no interest in doing the round island route 1 I think it is. I heard it was boring, monotonous and lots of traffic. Instead I rode south from Taipei into the central hills and mountains rode around there for a week or so then into Taroko National Park and down the gorge to Hualien which was a fantastic ride. I then rode up the east coast on the coast road through all the tunnels to Luodong which I don't recommend as the tunnels are horrendous with lots of heavy trucks and coaches along the route. It can be pretty scary inside tunnels with them barrelling down on you. Also the weather was awful. I got soaked and was shivering when I rolled into Luodong,. Then from Luodong I cut across back over the hills back to Taipei then out to the north west and into Yangmingshang national park. A steep climb up to the summit and good views and a great long descent to the northern coast and then east towards Keelung city. An easyish ride back along the river to Taipei and view of Taipei 101. I am glad I didn't ride around the island like so many do, especially the industrialised, noisy, heavy traffic of the west coast. I would have hated that.
    I ate in 7-11 and Family Mart as well. After one week I felt pretty bad as you cannot survive on the food they sell as it is highly processed and of low nutritional value.
    Anyway looking forward to your part 2 of your ride up the east coast to the north of the island.

    • @AsiaHikelopedia
      @AsiaHikelopedia  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep. Some of it is definitely not fun. For me the worst parts were through the suburbs of Taichung, into Kaohsiung on the second night and the northeast coast, although a lot of it now is bike trails. The road between Hualien and Yilan is 75% traffic free now as they have built new tunnels and all the buses and trucks take the new road leaving the old road to bikes and scooters (not many). It's really quite pleasant now as long as the weather holds out.

    • @alexmorgan3435
      @alexmorgan3435 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AsiaHikelopedia Thanks for the update. I loved cycling in the central hills and mountains away from the coast. Beautiful but hard work, steep! The coast road north of Hualien sounds a lot better now if there is little traffic on it as most traffic takes the newer road. Still lots of ups and downs on that stretch though. Yilan is a place I visted ss well. Really enjoyed my tour in Taiwan. Friendly people. But the millions of pesky polluting scooters weren't nice to breath all the toxins they produce. Still must go back some day, hopefully before China tries to take it back and inevitable war.
      Thanks for making and sharing the video.

    8 days around the island is really impressive! I took 13 days to go round on my scooter (but then I was taking my time a bit, stopping at the major towns and sticking to the coast).
    8:26 188km in one day on a bike is insane! I couldn't imagine it! 😄
    11:01 7-11 stop at FamilyMart?😆Seriously though, it's interesting to see these places I visited on my way to the Southernmost point, Hengchun was lovely!
    12:02 Looks like we stopped at a few of the same places. Nice to see from another point of view.
    16:10 I remember that road, I was driving on it at night on my way to Taimali, it was terrifying!
    17:44 I remember this place well because fighter jets flew over while I was there, and the hilarious thing was there were signs there saying "Potential Danger Zone" 😂

    I wonder if you can recommend any good place for family hikes plus a great hotel ? We are planning to have a family hike somewhere in Taiwan, my parents are coming along but I guess I need to put them in a nice hotel so we can hike for two days but spend some time with them in the evening. Any idea would be so awesome 🎉 thanks !

      Xitou in Nantou is a place that has a few trails plus a couple of decent hotels, although the hikes are pretty easy. Another idea is obviously Alishan. Lots of hotels and hikes around there.

    Hi Richard, curious where did you park your bike other then at hotels when visiting locations of interest? Is it safe to leave your bicycle unlocked in Taiwan? Any chance of wild camping or free camping sites? Thank you!

    • @AsiaHikelopedia
      @AsiaHikelopedia  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha. I didn't really stop at too many sites apart from roadside viewpoints and such, but when I did I left my bike unlocked (probably not a good idea). It's pretty safe if you're just going into a 7-11 or taking a leak at the gas station. Free camping is fine, but you just have to find a secluded spot or wait till after dark to set up. I have a friend who does it all the time.
