It's best to paint on a layer of resin first and letting it dry before adding the glass because the plywood will soak up a lot of resin. If you don't, you won't get as good a bond as you think and it can delaminate down the track. Also, if you are glassing over an outside corner, you will have the same bonding issue you have on an inside corner, so it's best to round the corners off with a router :)
@@fishhuntadventure Quote: _"resin doesn’t dry. It cures."_ Oops... we're so sorry snowflake. Are your pronouns 'they' / 'them'? Did you grind your teeth and throw something across the room because he said 'dry' instead of 'cure'?
Lol that’s awesome bro. I always say if you don’t know how to do something TH-cam it. Hahaha have a great day and I’m really stoked that my video helped you.
There's a bit of talent involved in getting the right amount of resin down before the glass is placed, then getting just the right amount of resin into the top of the material, and then, if you are going to do a lay-up with woven roving, add more resin and apply the roving. Wet that out without over saturating the material. All the strength is in the material, not the resin, and too much resin actually weakens the layup. Once glass sets up, it needs to be "wiped off" with sandpaper to prevent air bubbles between the layups caused by "stickers".. Good glass is clear. A bad spot needs to be ground out and reglassed. Fiberglass is flexable because the strands are so tiny, and , yes, it is actually glass. A lot of the diy articles use epoxy resin, but ALL commercial projects are done in polyester resin. Too much hardener will make glass brittle as it ages or turn brown even when new. The enemy of fiberglass is sun light. Keep it protected (coated with something), and it will last many years. Originally, fiberglass resin was cured using sunlight, which is why all the fiberglass boats came from Florida for years. Don't try this though, just use the hardener. Unprotected fiberglass will continue to harden and then crack. If glassing over wood, wipe the surface off with sandpaper, then a barely moist cloth and coat it with resin... Allow it to harden, then wipe it again. Resand very lightly if needed and run the tack rag again. A really great filler can be made super cheap using CaCO3 (calcium carbonate) and resin. It really helps with inside corners and bad spots in cheap plywood like knotholes without affecting quality or strength. . .
Very simple nice example, enough to encourage anyone to try it. Recently bought a an older 19'8" Carolina Skiff which has a huge stern standing platform(easily 4'*7' beam with two 40 gallon plus bait wells. Its too large, no walking space behind the console seating. Since I rarely use the bait wells I am shortening the platform front to back distance and converting same bait well space to two seats for passengers, where the middle will become one bait well. Great motivating video!
Nice video. That said, always pre coat the surface you are glassing or it will suck the resin from the glass. Also, heave resin application is not a good idea and leads to weak layups. Just enough resin to soak the glass. Inside that box there is no way to get the extra resin out and it will pool creating an uneven surface.
Thanks for making it so simple to understand without using so many technical terms, im literally gonna try fibreglsss the bulkheads in my boat because of your video Thanks brother 🙏
Thank you. I’m going to be making an instrument package for a 2021 Yamaha Jet boat. There isn’t enough room for the Chartplotter so this will move my gauges around to make room. I’ll be layering the fiberglass over a plastic mock up. Here’s hoping it goes well.

Hey mate, just come across this video thanks for the tips. Did you gelcoat over that also? You should do another video and show how it's going or you using it 👍
A good starter tutorial for sure, definitely not complaining haha. But I wanna redo my 1980 celica's door panels, I can't find any replacement parts that aren't stupid expensive. Lol thanks Kev yeah mate this is my most viewed video. Looks like there is a very high demand for people wanting to fiberglass things and i’m fortunate to have this video ranks very high for most fiberglass searches.
sir, I have a question if you dont mind giving me an important tip. I have a concrete water slide in my swimming pool and it is not slippery as we want it to be. We are thinking of overlaying a fiberglass on top of the concrete. will it work just exactly how you applied it on your video? tHANK you in advance.
Good day and thank you for the message. On a concrete water slide you just have to make sure you clean it properly and get rid of any old paint before applying fiberglass. Also coat it with a layer of resin and let it soak in and semi dry before applying your 1st layer of fiberglass. Apply then at least 2 layers of fiberglass let dry for 48 hours and then give it a good sanding to make sure it is flat and smooth. Then apply 2 layer of gel coat and finish off with 1 layer of flowcoat. Flowcoat is gelcoat bassed but has an added wax layer that will rise to the surface and make the slide nice and slippery when wet. Also give it a good sanding in between the 2 layers of gelcoat but do not sand after flowcoat was added. I hope that I’m explaining it well enough but if you have any questions just ask and I’ll try my best to help you out.
i work for a boat yard and am having a hard time with the Epoxy resin fibre layout. truth be told i cant get the right calculation or say my layout looks powdery at the base of the lamination. can you help me out will be grateful with your help
The correct ratio for mixing resin with hardener is normally 2% so for every 1L of resin you use you have to add 20ml of hardener. Also when applying the resin make sure you add enough for the fibre to ubsorbe the epoxy as adding too little will also result in it not sticking properly and perhaps causing that powdery effect your talking about. Another thing is to use a fiberglass roller to be able to roll out all of the air bubbles and helps the epoxy seep through the glass and stick properly. Hope this helps. Cheers.
I just need about 20 square foot of that fabric do they come in different thicknesses because I'm trying to replace some holes in a old garage door paneling. THANKS FROM MARYLAND USA
Brett. Yes they come in different thicknesses and you can normally buy them per square foot. I normally use 450gsm (grams per square meter ) thickness and then double up on it for extra strength as needed.
I have never roller will a card work? I have a small paint roller from dollar tree will it work? Please help me. First time to do fiberglass. Gonna apply it straght to door metal and walls wood cedar will it stick? Trying to get hurricane proof.
The idea behind the roller is to get rid of all the air bubbles. You can also do this by just using a paint brush it just takes longer. The fibreglass and resin will stick to things can absorb the liquid so would not stick to metal properly.
Not sure if you’re still active on here but could you give me insight on fiberglass? We had a fiberglass contamination from our mattress and it went all over the room on walls, clothes, toys etc. we had a remediation company come to clean as much as they can but we still come across pieces every now and then! I can’t seem to get fully rid of it on clothes and it wouldn’t bother me nor my wife, however we have a 1yo daughter and for her safety I’m doing what I can to keep everything fiberglass free but that’s never going to happen. Is fiberglass dangerous? Do you have tips on how to get them off clothes because washing them doesn’t fully do it?
Polyester resins can be thinner with acetone or styrene. Don't premix resin to far ahead of time,, or it will get hard before you can finish the layup! I known of one guy who mixed up an entire barrel of resin! Got extremely hot and set up the entire barrel! Very expensive loss?!
Dude, best random find this year. I've always wondered how fiberglass went down.... is this the basic format for all fiberglass? And I couldn't tell, does it come out crystal clear or can you see the fiberglass? Sorry for basic questions. Great video. Will subscribe for sho
i wish you'd mentioned this wasn't a mould as the caulking threw me off. i was thinking why didn't you use 'peanut butter'? why didn't you use resin first? but, now i see what your intent was....
ryan barker sorry for the confusion. I was pretty new at making TH-cam videos at the time and did not realise there would be so much confusion. Lol. Yes my intentions was just to waterproof the ply fish box which I have build for my boat.
Hi. I just stumbled onto your channel and saw this video. Is there some sort of chemical that is supposed to be used after after this video like a resin to close up pores or something?
Gelcoat? If your resin is waxed (polyester resin) then no need to paint or gelcoat, it should cure on its own, the non-waxed resin remains tacky and needs to be sealed inorder to cure.
Instead of buying the fiberglass matting material, is it possible to reuse old fiberglass bats from a house tear down? Seems like it would save a lot of money.
I don’t think those bats are 100% fiberglass and some of the materials in the bats might react negatively to the resin and dissolve. Would be a very interesting experiment. Would you please let me know if you tried it and how it went.
I know you posted this a year ago but to be honest, I used old T-shirt's instead of fiberglass material. It came out great. Once the resin is on, and you use bondo, and after sanding you can tell the difference
That sounds like a good project bro. Good luck. The time you think you’ll spend on it double that and triple your budget too. Lol. Please let know how your getting on. Or even post videos on your channel and I’ll give it a watch. Thanks for the comment. 🎣
hi thanks for the vid :) I was wondering if I could you this method to strengthen my gazebo poles. What do you think? I was also thinking to wrap duct tape round them first. Thanks again
I think it would work if you cut fibreglass matting in a bong strip and wrap it around poles. Then stick the ends down and wet it with the resin. Would be really messy poses though so your duct tape might be an easier less messy option although I think the glass might be stronger.
Hi .im making a model with fiberglass and wahite foam(tharmopool) but resing burning the faom its getting shrink when i put resin on foam .plz help me and tell me what to do
Resin will react and disintegrate foam. you can paint it with a water based paint 5-6 very thick coats and let dry in between coats. this will form a bit of a barrier to protect the foam from the resin but may still in some areas start to dissolve the resin if paint not thick enough.
Queensland, Prison Island here ;) Cheers for the vid. Trying to figure out how to lay a coat over the side of my 4x4... remove it and fit it to the camper.. same body shell.
funny money Hi you could use epoxy resin pigment to add to your resin. It can be found on Amazon. please click on any of the Amazon links in the description. That would take you to Amazon an you can search for the pigment from there. By using my link I would get a small commission from amazon and that helps me out heaps. Thanks for the comment.
Hi Pia In short yes it will. You have to make sure to do your prep work on the metal very well though. buff the metal with a steel brush on a grinder and be sure to get rid of any rust, paint or damaged metal. you should only have bare metal. Also be sure too clean the entire container thoroughly before starting to fiberglass. any loose metal or rust left behind will create a void where the fiberglass will lift up. give the bare metal a coat of resin and let it sit until almost dry ( it should be tacky) then start applying the fiberglass and wet it in thoroughly. Make sure to use a few coats of fiberglass to ensure it lasts a long time. It will be a big job but you only want to do it once so do it right the first time.
Hi Scott. Yes I’ve put a flow coat over the top after sanding it all down. If you look at this vid. At 5min into it I have the actual seat that I’ve put on the boat. With flow coat finishing. Here is the link. th-cam.com/video/jKHObgQjHBk/w-d-xo.html
You don't put gelcoat on top of fibreglass. You actually can do but you must add wax to it so it doesn't remain tacky. Alternatively use pre blended flowcoat.
Gel coat is first applied to a mold, I. E. a boat mold, then glassed behind it.... Flowcoat is the opposite, the last layer of paint, added over existing glass....
After you tear off the piece of mat you are going to use, wad it into a tight ball and then release it. That will make the mat much more flexible. You may also find that you can separate the layers of the mat thereby making it thinner and, again, more flexible. This will work on the 1 1/2 oz mat that is usually sold to the general public. Also, you may try cutting the mat so that it overlaps in corners and lays flat instead of wrinkling.
glenn nuttall Hi. I find that the Chop strand is a lot easier to work with if your doing a box or something that is not a large flat service as it folds and moulds Easter. Thanks for watching.
Yes but only when your sanding it down and that fiber dust gets on your skin. Be sure to wear overalls or long sleeves and cover up as much as possible. Also a good idea to wear a dust mask and eye protection. trust me the dust gets in everywhere and you will itch for at least a week.
Hello there I'm very new to all this where would I buy the fiberglass glass Fabric and resin from? Also what does the Catalyst do do you need to pour that in the resin?
Hi Brett. I bought mine from the local pool repair shop. But there are many online stores selling it too. The catalyst is basically the Hardner. It sets off the chemical reaction for the resin to harden. You need to add 2 percent catalyst to the resin depending on the tempretures. If it’s colder you need to add more. 18 degrees celceus and up is normally perfect. That means for every litre of resin you need to add 20mls of catalyst.
With so many people passing through It Would be pretty cool to know where your all from let me know down here.

You put the trim back together over it.
I just started fiberglassing. One thing I noticed was that the resin which was premixed was very thick. How do I thin it a lil bit? Thanks!
Great how-to. Thanks 👏👊👍
should throw a tack coat or two on the bare wood first, because the wood will wick some of the resin out of the matt material
Thanks for the extra tip 🤗
the resin u r using is blue colour..... can u tel me what is that
In polyester resins , the blue is a cobalt solution! The more the "blue" the faster the resin will get hard!
you from New Zealand?
yeah mate 😃
Bloody good video mate. Thanks for the help.
What ever you do, DON'T USE FIBERGLASS GlASS HOUSE INSOLATION!;!!
That’s me a trained fibreglasser now.
good tips for us beginners, thankyou.
I'm gonna build a boat next month cos I have a rib but want to build my own. Thx bro👍
That sounds like a good project bro. Good luck. The time you think you’ll spend on it double that and triple your budget too. Lol. Please let know how your getting on. Or even post videos on your channel and I’ll give it a watch. Thanks for the comment. 🎣
@@FishingAdventuresHB thanks bro and I'll let you know on my channel👍
Nice job on the video!
Great video !! 😃🤗👍💃🏻👍👍
hi thanks for the vid :) I was wondering if I could you this method to strengthen my gazebo poles.
@@FishingAdventuresHB yes i think so too. only trouble where i live its either too wet outside or too hot lol
Nice work thinking about making a spoiler for mu car
South African?
Hi .im making a model with fiberglass and wahite foam(tharmopool) but resing burning the faom its getting shrink when i put resin on foam .plz help me and tell me what to do
Resin will react and disintegrate foam. you can paint it with a water based paint 5-6 very thick coats and let dry in between coats. this will form a bit of a barrier to protect the foam from the resin but may still in some areas start to dissolve the resin if paint not thick enough.
@@FishingAdventuresHB thanks sir .but plz tell what u r using for paint.is it rasin or what
You cannot put polyester resins on POLYSTRENE foams! You must use POLYURETHANE foams instead.
Queensland, Prison Island here ;)
Cheers for the vid.
Trying to figure out how to lay a coat over the side of my 4x4... remove it and fit it to the camper.. same body shell.
Is jy nie n boertjie nie? Baie dankie.!
Thanks from the USA.
I love the dog lol
ok so the fist full of fiber strands is normal. I always end up with it everywhere tools etc, but looks pretty normal
Lol yeah mate they are unstoppable. Sticks on everything. 🤣
How do you get the fiberglass out.
Onya mate. prob agree that you might primer coat first.
Thanks
Your very welcome 🎣
6:59 did a firetruck go by? lol
Lol. Now that you mention it it sounds just like it.
hi
what can i use to color the fibeglass to blue
funny money Hi you could use epoxy resin pigment to add to your resin. It can be found on Amazon. please click on any of the Amazon links in the description. That would take you to Amazon an you can search for the pigment from there. By using my link I would get a small commission from amazon and that helps me out heaps. Thanks for the comment.
I'm converting a shipping container into a pool. would fiberglass stick to the steelframe ?

Great job, hi from England 👍
Thanks!
What does adding fiberglass do? What is its purpose?
Ummm,waterproofing?
Nice job. Did you end up putting any type of gel coat over the resin and matting?
Perfect explanation. Thank you.
Good job sir keep it up
Absolute legend
THE HUSKIES 😂😍😍😍😍😍
Nice Job! I wonder what kind of fruit was laying on the ground ;)
Thanks mate. That’s fruit is oranges.
DICK fruit.
What type of caulk did you use?
Hey James. I used Shelley’s NO MORE GAPS coloured Caulk light grey.
I was trying to make my bike body, but i was not able to fold the mat at corners, please help me
After you tear off the piece of mat you are going to use, wad it into a tight ball and then release it.
Excellent stuff. Thank you for making this!
No worries mate I’m glad if it helped you out.
i was going to make box with a lid to go in my caravan ,as another chiller box.Should i use the chop mat you used ,cheers and thanks
glenn nuttall Hi. I find that the Chop strand is a lot easier to work with if your doing a box or something that is not a large flat service as it folds and moulds Easter. Thanks for watching.
Cool tutorials man, keep it up
Thanks for that mate. Much appreciated.
Doesn't the fiberglass make you itchy? Great vid Tks 👌🏻
Yes but only when your sanding it down and that fiber dust gets on your skin. Be sure to wear overalls or long sleeves and cover up as much as possible. Also a good idea to wear a dust mask and eye protection. trust me the dust gets in everywhere and you will itch for at least a week.
Good work man, thinking of building a live bait tank for my live baits. 👍
Ytanythinggoes I’m thinking of building a dead bait tank for my dead baits
@@FishingAdventuresHB is this fibre the same as the one used in cushioning sofa set
Hi mary owino no definitely not. This is fibre glass matting and you would be able to get it from a hardware store
Love these tutorials of yours bro
Thanks so much bro. Glad to hear. 🎣
