Concours vs. Versys 1000 - Battle of two great machines!

  • It seems like once or twice a week, I get asked why we decided to stay with the Versys instead of the Concours. This video addresses that question. Both of the bikes are great machines, but one fits our riding style better than the other. Does not mean that one is better than the other. It means one makes our riding experience a better one than the other. If you had to choose, which bike would fit you best?

I've ridden my 2009 C1400 Concours (KonKoor, no s mon ami) for over 125,000 smiling miles. Bulletproof reliable and will bomb the twisties once you get a 190/55/17 PR Michelin installed and a "sag set". No problem with heat either if you have the inner fairing foams- I think some bikes came without them from the factory.. I have smoked FJR's, and a K1600 GT much to his chagrin. I'm 70 and do several long trips a year with 400 mile days and a Seth Laam seat. Met a guy in California with 290,000 miles on his 2008 C1400 with normal maintenance.

Good review. I traded my 08 Vstrom 1000 for a 2013 Concours. I could ride the Vstrom quicker in the twisties for sure but 350 kilometers was my limit. I've ridden my Connie 1000 kms a couple times and I was tired but ok. I may look at the Versys again next year as I'm going to be 63 and it's a beast to push around 🤣

I've owned both, and you nailed it. I've owned both, still have a 15 V1k. I also owned a Versys 650 Lt for years and used it as a commuter bike. The Versys platform just works. The C14 is a great bike, but it wasn't as fun in the twisted, and I never found it to be as comfortable as what most reviewers would lead you to believe. (I'm 6'4") I added the touring seat and went through multiple windshields trying to find the sweet spot, AST risers, etc., still not what I thought was "comfortable". I cut some weight with an exhaust swap, but she was still a big girl. I like the Versys considerably better, and will more than likely upgrade to a newer model someday. Right now my dual sports and Africa Twin get most of my attention. Ride safe. 👍

Your decision makes sense based on your style of riding. I actually purchased the 2013 C14 specifically because of the re-designed fairing design. As far as handling, I can say that the Concours doesn't feel heavy to me at all. I don't do any 2 up riding and so I can't speak on that. I do have a Garmin Zumo 595 LM and I use it for route planning and tracking routes. I love it. I'm 52 now and as I get older, I may need to swap out my Concours, but for right now I kinda love it.

I’m a little late to Kawasaki, but have looked at them for decades, especially the Concours. Recently got a lightly used ‘19 Versys 1000 and it’s a revelation to me. It’s the antithesis to the big ADVs, baggers, and STs; so light and nimble. Although a little taller than I would normally prefer, it’s so light that it’s not a concern (so far) with my 32” inseam and touring boots, and the electronic suspension makes it easy to lower preload/height when stiffness isn’t needed. Best overall riding experience I’ve ever had. One test ride and I was hooked instantly. I’ve only had one previous I-4 (K1200LT) and never found another engine type that I liked more for touring and some sport. Happy to have a strong I-4 again. The V1k is great. Everything about it is easy, usable, and smooth. The electronic suspension is fantastic. Power is perfectly matched to the chassis and fairing/shield. The center stand is so easy and will make the occasional chain work easy. Easily the best value ever for my money, given the overall package. Appreciate your videos; they factored into my decision to chance it on the’19.

I have a 2017 Concours 14 and I agree with the handling somewhat... I too felt it was a bit heavy in the turns when I bought it new, but I knew once I tuned the suspension for my weight and my gear, I knew it would ride amazingly. I adjusted my suspension in the front and rear of the bike and now I could do a track day and drag my knee on my KING CON!

I've enjoyed multiple bikes from a Gpz 1100, Gpz 750 Turbo, 600 Ninja, 750 Ninja, ZX12 ZX14, and now the C14. All of these bikes I enjoyed to the fullest. Without a doubt the last 3 will always be special. The C14 does have some issues with fueling this is cured easily by flashing the ECU. The potato cannon on the right side of the bike weighs about 40 to 45 lbs. Replacing it with a 2 brothers weighing around 12 lbs removing bags, and center stand saves 60 lbs total. Once the stock rear tire needs replacement a 200, or 190-55/17 instead of the 190-50/17 will provide ear to ear grins. Tire pressure always 42psi, 2psi either way with any bike your out of the comfort zone.
Then the dreaded suspension adjustment, apparently riders tend to make due with the stock settings. This will not do! It is a pain finding the best setup for your type of riding but once you have the C14 dialed in will stay with 1000 SS all day long. Not to mention continue reeling in the miles while your friends unfold themselves from their mounts and make their way to the chiropractor. The C14 at 610 lbs will eat any Sport touring package alive other than Kawasaki pressurized 1000 which costs far more than the C14.

I thought I’d take a break from touring, the triple is my daily commuter to work (30 miles). However, I fell into a 2012 Concours last fall and now have both it and the Triumph. Very thorough explanation on your reasoning for your choice of bikes! I’m 63, but only started riding about 11 years ago. Rode a Suzuki Burgman 650 for about 3 years and 27K miles, and even though it did everything I could ask of it, I wanted to get something that had more suspension travel for my wife’s comfort. Did a lot of research online, read magazine reviews, etc., but it wasn’t until I saw the new 2013 Triumph Trophy SE did I make up my mind. It had features even the Gold Wing didn’t have - I mean everything!
Long story short, I put 54,000 miles on my first one, and came across a deal I couldn’t refuse on a 2017, and have over 30,000 on it. The only issue with the Trophy? Well, I’m a Jeep guy myself, and I’d ride past some pretty cool looking forest roads, really wanting to explore. But not on that 700 lb. bike! So last summer, I added a 2020 Tiger Rally Pro to the stable. The wife will never ride pillion on it, but she has been riding her 2015 Can Am Spyder RT anyway (40,000 miles), so no worries there. Even though the Tiger is much more comfortable to ride about town (and definitely more versatile!), that Trophy will still more comfortably eat up 500+ mile days...

The heat was fixed in 2010 on the C14. The 09 has the same fairings as the 08. The '10 and up basically has extra rubbery trim in between the motor and the fairing to direct air away from your legs. Apparently the 09 and 09 would almost cook your legs at stop lights and signs. I had a 10, great bike. The next big change was 2015 with the updated suspension settings, gearing and new windshield.
I'd also highly recommend the FJR from Yamaha as well. It is basically neck and neck with the C14. It is not quite as a rocket at the top end, but it is torquier at lower RPMs making low speed stuff a little easier. It is almost just as heavy, though post 2013 it gets cruise. It only has a 5 speed until 2016 though... if you are used to a Kawasaki it will be a learning curve... I kept trying to shift to a non existent 6th a lot on that bike, mine was an 08. It's bags are a hair smaller, still has heated grips, no TPMS, but it has a way better looking ass... the C14 taillight situation has always bothered me, lol. Also odd that Kawi never added cruise to the Connie...
I am also thinking of a Versys for my next bike... your vid was helpful, thanks!

I live on a dirt road now, not good on the connie, but the Versys is a natural. Here in Fl it gets HOT, and during the summer riding sucks. I can ride the Versys in in the heat like I rode unfaired bikes years ago... no heat soak. The c-14 blasts it in the hp dept, but like you said, I can get in trouble quick, whereas the Versys has me riding more sanely. I regret that decision every day. The C14 was an outstanding machine. It was a 9/10. It would be a 10/10 if the seat was more comfortable (for me) and it had cruise control. But much much better than my Africa Twin.

Hey Jerry, this is a great video.
I'm in Hereford, England, and I was originally thinking about getting a Concours (over here it's called the GTR 1400) because I have Wales practically on my front door and some beautiful valley roads to play on. But that was the thing that I worried about, too: the weight. The 1400 is a big ol' girl, and, although she hides it well in a straight line, the twisty bits would present a problem. I've got a busted knee from an accident from 2010, so the weight and maneuverability of the 1400 presented a genuine cause for concern.
Therefore, being a life long Kawasaki fan, I looked to see what else they had in their stable, and the Versys 1000 has definitely peaked my interest.
I'm getting my bike in May of 22 and will be going for a 2015 to 2018 model. Its a lot lighter, is a highly capable tourer and, as you stated yourself, running costs of the Versys are significantly lower than those of the 1400. And being a taller bike, my bad knee won't be folded underneath me on the Versys as much as it would be on the GTR.
Your review and side by side comparison of the bikes was exactly what I was looking for, even though some may wonder why a comparison would even be needed between two such fundamentally different bikes!? Basically, they're both mile munchers.
Apart from the glorious Welsh roads and scenery, I'm going to take a trip to Florence, Italy (a tick off my Bucket List) on the bike during the last two weeks in June, and I'm gonna be doing it on a Kawasaki Versys 1000 😉👍🏻.
    Stay safe. Stay healthy.
    God Bless.

Coming off an 09 R1 my 13 Concours doesn't feel super fast, but definitely has some stonk. You notice the handling difference, but you can only go so crazy on the roads around here without being thrown in jail. I like the creature comforts - wind protection, heated grips etc. - but I don't use the storage much except the top box. My wife doesn't really like riding 2 up, but my kids (7 and 10) do like to go on the back, and the big bike does seem to offer some sense of security. The story of my life.... after about 70,000 miles on a C 14, I switched to a Versys 1000 LT SE+ in 2020. About 150 lb (68 kg) lighter and about 35 hp less, but still more than enough power. Cruise control was the deal breaker..... living in the midwest, I have a long haul to the Appalachians or the Rockies. Sometimes, I miss the "hand of God" acceleration of the C 14, and the electrically adjustable windscreen of the C 14, but the Versys is still a comfortable mile-eater.

Was considering a new Versys 1000, Yamaha FJR1300, or the Concours 14 to trade on this past spring. But of course anything new had to be ordered, with the only information dealers could give me being "It would get here when it gets here. Could be 2 weeks, could be 8 months." However, the one dealer had a nice condition, low mileage used '16 Concours. Nice review! I have owned both the Concours 14 and Versys 1000 and your observations echo my experience. To me, the Concours is more visually appealing, warmer on a cool day (and on a hot day), smoother and faster (in a straight line). However, the Versys is more nimble, lighter, easier to shift smoothly, not as hot, and, as you touched on, less mentally and physically fatiguing over the course of a day in the saddle. I love the Concours but ride the Versys year round, not just in cooler weather. 🙂

Excellent information. Currently on a Bandit 12 and looking for a bigger, more comfortable long distance bike. Considering an FJR or a C14, both for shaft drive, fuel injection and water cooling. Rode a '19 Versys 1000 at a Kawa dealer demo day in early '19 and was super impressed with the ergos and power. FI and cooling are deal breakers, but I'd seriously consider a Versys for its comfort. I had a 1990 GTR 1000 Kawasaki and put 42000 miles on it. I thought the bike was fantastic, enough power to have fun on, weather protection was excellent, a massive tank, great mpg and easy for the shortest of pillion to get on to. I sold the bike to buy a 2010 GTR 1400 and in my opinion the 1000 is a much better bike. The 1400s fueling was horrible with a very snatch throttle, notchy gear change and when in fun mode heavy mpg but a ECU reflash from Steve at Shoudhavebeen engineering cures all of the problems. However the bikes weather protection could be better, a struggle for a short pillion to climb on to, the tank could be bigger and I found the bike to be quite tire critical, I now run Avon 3D Storm which have fixed the vague handling issues. Plus the linked brakes gave a very strange feeling in the rear pedal. I now love the big 1400 and the power is addictive but I had to do plenty to it to make it the way I wanted it. All in all they are both good bikes but you can get sucked into the game of thinking spending big money on a bike is gonna be better than your old machine and sometimes it's not...

Second remark, I was surprised by the low tire mileage. My HD RGU gets about 10k on the rear and more on the front, using Michelin Commander IIs. I have never had to replace a kevlar drive belt. 20K isn't bad for a chain. I had a 71 Honda 750 that loved to eat chains. I always carried a spare.

    • @jerryandjamie2up

    • @gbinman

I cannot speak to 2 up. My wife rides her own HD RG. I switched from HD/Dunlops to Michelins because the Dunlop front tires would cup so badly that I would replace them early because of it. Cupping comes from hard cornering, assuming good suspension.

I have a 2015 concours 14, it basically runs the same tires as my Z1000, they are sport tires for handling so softer rubber than the harley cruiser would have. I get anywhere from 7,000 to 9,000 per set of tires. They are making more advanced touring tires where the middle patch of the tire has a harder compound to help with the mileage. The thing that surprised me is you have to change both, with my Vulcan 800 the front tire lasts almost twice as long as the rear.

Comparing a Versys to a Concours is kind of like comparing apples to oranges. The Versys is more like a Yamaha Tracer, Multistrada, Tiger, etc. Unfortunately though, the Versys is overpriced for what it is. I've ridden and owned a Concours, I've owned a 2015 FJR1300, and I currently own a Triumph Tiger 1200 XCx. By far the Triumph Tiger 1200 is the best all purpose bike (for me). It has 141hp and every imaginable electronic gadget you could want on it... Including heated grips, heated seat, cruise, full electronic suspension, 6 rider modes, TFT Display, LED Lighting, Large Fuel Tank, etc. ** Also, that Black/White Versys looks like it could be a pretty cool police bike! The Versys 1000 goes for about $18,000 up here - should be more in the 12k - 13k range in my opinion. I've been riding about 30 years now.

I am looking for something with better tech and less weight. Mine is about 950 lbs without loading the bags. It does have a lot more torque but as I have aged I am feeling the weight more than I like and I expect that with less weight it wouldn't be missed. @@evilwestsidefan9249 without going into an extended brand war, I haven't ridden your bike and you haven't ridden mine. I recently did ride a 2021 Versys, it felt like half the weight, which I would expect would be close to what you would experience. The clutch was a one finger pull. The power delivery was good almost in any gear, but I can also say the same about power with my HD. My bike is higher in torque by far I enjoyed the ride but it was limited (2 miles was their policy with an escort) I talked him into going to a local road with fast double esses. Going easy I left my escort without even pressing. I liked the way it cornered. I wish metrics allowed test rides like Harley.

I did consider the FJR. I like the Yamaha but after riding the C-14 I was sold! I rode with a couple of guys on FJR's and I would have to disagree about the handling. Both are heavy machines. The power of the C-14 is intoxicating. My C-14 did a few track days, you had to ride it. But handled well enough. It settled into corners like a pro. CC has never been a big deal for me. Have put on a ton of miles and rarely use it. Thanks for watching. I will say the FJR looks awesome! Saw a blue one this weekend and it was beautiful. Ride safe!

      @jerryandjamie2up  ปีที่แล้ว

Hey Randy, Thanks for watching the video. I can assure you burnouts and locking up the rear wheel never occurred. The C-14 is a heavy machine, then you throw me 250lbs plus my wife's 120lbs is a ton of weight with a great amount of horsepower. We have done multiple track days and live in an area that lends itself to a lot of spirited twisty road encounters. Not a good equation for rear tires. Even on my Versys I only get around 7-8K on the rear. It's known on all of the boards and around the C-14 community that you will be eating tires at a scary rate! Thanks again for watching.

I'm actually on the fence between the Connie and the ZX14R. I'm 60, 6'2",180#... Tall and skinny. I've owned multiple Ninja 1000's. I've owned a Suzuki V-Strom so I know how the Versys sits. Personally, I'm not a fan of the taller seat height. Especially with luggage. And frankly, the last few years of the Ninja 1000 they have made more comfortable, more agile, and they've given it all the toys. I'm surprised in this video you didn't even consider the Ninja over the Versys.
The ZX14R is maybe 80-100lbs lighter than the Connie and that's easy enough to realize. A chain weighs a hell of a lot less than a shaft drive. It doesn't come with a center stand (although you can get one). The bars are lighter, etc... The ZX is still a pig, but then 1,400cc's weighs a few pounds...lol.
I totally get why you like the Versys. The Ninja 1000 engine is bulletproof, smooth as silk, progressive and predictable throttle, and with the Versys maintenance cost is a tad less than the Ninja ( less fairings).
I'm in Florida. I bought the first gen (2011) Ninja 1000. MSRP was $10,999. The only options were heated grips and luggage. I went with the Givi side cases and heated grips. The bike was on sale because as a first year production they actually didn't have much press or interest so I found it online for $8,299!!! With the bags and heated grips I still made it OTD at less than MSRP! That's a no-brainer! I put 30,000 miles on it before I even did a valve adjustment!
So yeah, the Versys by default is a great bike.
Have you ever compared the ZX14R to the Connie?

    • @jerryandjamie2up
      @jerryandjamie2up  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for watching the video. I made the comparison between the C14 and the Versys because I have owned both machines. I like the Ninja 1000 and if I were doing a lot of solo riding, I am sure that is one of the bikes I would look into. The price is great and the motor is awesome. I have ridden the Ninja 1000 and was very impressed. I also rode the KTM 1290 GT and that is an awesome machine as well.
I have never been fan of the ZX14. Big and powerful, just does not do much for me. Thanks again for watching!

I’ve owned both the 2013 ZX-14R (called ZZR1400 in Europe) and now the 2013 Concours 14. I owned the 14R when I lived in Germany and loved, loved, loved it. I’ve ridden many mountain passes in Austria and gone to the race track with it. You cannot go wrong with the 14R. That said, standard driving speed for me in Germany was 200 km/hr. At that speed the wind holds you up and reduces the weight on your wrists. Driving slower speeds here in the USA, that might be an issue. When I moved back to Florida, I bought a Concours 14 as an attempt to slow down and ride in a more relaxed position. That is a success. That said, I still dream about owning a ZX-14R again, but I’m not getting any younger…

Concours 1000 is a beast. Top heavy, especially with full tank of fuel, but you get used to it. Plenty of power. 3500rpm at 60mph in 6th gear.
0 to 60 in 3.5 seconds. Bulletproof engine.
Super roomy even 2 up. Super weather protection though can get hot behind fairing in summer.
400km plus per tank of gas. 28.5 litre tank
Suspension a bit soft but comfy. Brakes are adequate.
Bike does everything well but nothing great.
Great bikes that can be found on the cheap.

you bet, I can see where your coming from, it doesn’t look the part, but IMO it does have good performance, like I said before I’ve not ridden the GW, but I have ridden my ex’s-dads 99,(I think) Valkyrie, about 25 years ago and was thourouly impressed by it, however, given that; “ the Valkyrie is merely a Gold Wing in a bikini“ by comparison, would make my opinion on the matter mute…I have many friends that swear by their longevity and their performance, & are after me to make the plunge, but a destroyed & unstable knee has always kept me at bay especially since I’m over 50 and it balks at just holding my weight at times… but as for the GW a buddy of mine put it in perspective with his ever so southern charm, “she’s a big girl, but she moves like a ballerina” ( the bikini comparison was his too)...
My response “maybe so, but I can’t hold up a falling ballerina either”… lol
