  • I. Pleading, Molto Rubato
    II. Fast, Spirited
My string quartet is in two short movements. The first is a fugue at the tritone, which modulates to tonality and back. The second movement uses the subject of the fugue, reworking it into a lively scherzo. The second movement theme's rhythm is based on the Bransle Gay movement in Stravinsky's Agon, which uses polymeter hence the complex time signature changes you will hear in the second movement of my quartet. Technicalities aside, my quartet's use of the tritone with the perfect fifth along with the difference in tempo between movements creates a contrast of darkness and light, which serves as the central premise of the composition.
