Tyler Harrison

Dr. Tyler Harrison is an American composer and music educator. He has written three symphonies, a piano concerto, a cello concerto, and numerous concert works for orchestra and wind ensemble.
Harrison has completed two symphonies since 2021. His Symphony No. 3 was commissioned in 2022 by the Music and Moore Foundation for a two-symphony concert on mental health with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6. Harrison’s Symphony No. 2 was commissioned by a consortium of eight wind ensembles in the United States and Canada.
His music employs large contrapuntal forms, including "cloud" canons, double canons, and canonic fugues. His contrapuntal writing is used to create large sound masses, where established themes communicate to each other in moving clouds of sound.
Harrison earned his D.M.A. from the University of Colorado at Boulder and an M.M. from Manhattan School of Music. His mentors include David Maslanka, Carter Pann, Daniel Kellogg, Kevin Beavers, and Susan Botti.

Fantastique for Concert Band - Indiana Wind Symphony
Fantastique is a comic piece making fun of Symphonie Fantastique by Hector Berlioz. For the record, I actually like the parts of Symphonie Fantastique to a point. The 2nd and 4th movements work very well, and the “March of the Scaffold” has its place in the repertoire for good reason.
Once I hear the Dies Irae in a composition, I must admit I’m done listening. Granted, the quote was used with greater ingenuity by Rachmaninoff in the Symphonic Dances and lesser ingenuity by Daugherty in the Metropolis Symphony. That being said, the way it is used in Symphonie Fantastique as the accompaniment to a demon orgy is worthy of derision. In the words of Rossini after hearing the Berlioz, “It’s good this isn’t considered actual music.”
Fantastique is lovingly dedicated to my friend and mentor, Carter Pann, whose legendary wit and charm inspired its creation.

Harrison's "quotes" and re-creations from Tchaikovsky are great!
Tchaikovsky's 6th is wonderful, but forgive me if my focus is on Harrison's work. I don't know anything about this composer, and I regret my ignorance very much. But I do feel that this work is a masterpiece, and I find Harrison's text about it to be both highly illuminating and deeply moving.
