    Despite the awkward animation of the Beauty and the Beast story, I actually quite like the designs. There's something intriguing about a gothic/melancholic Beauty, falling in love with a demonic looking Beast in a Tim Burton styled castle. I definitely think that this has potential had it been executed better.

      Yeah this is a big step up from most of the bad VHS versions that he's watched which mostly seemed designed to trick confused grandparents- the animation's not great and it's no Storyteller, but this had some ambition of both having different specific styles and showcasing some lesser known fairy tales.

    Something about it being this strange gangly thing much it that much creepier, plus I think having the monster be "ugly" makes the live story more impactful.

    The version of Sedna I knew was that her dad pushed her overboard and every time she tried to grab the boat he walloped her fingers and broke them off one by one. The fingers became seals and her thumbs whales. After that she was basically a sea/seal spirit with no fingers so she always had seal attendants to help. Oh and her father SUPER died after that, he almost made it to the shore then WHAM Sedna sent a huge storm and drowned him and his men. My book thought this was appropriate for children, dunno why this cartoon wussed out.

    I like that this one gave us more diverse tales than just the original Beauty and the Beast, despite the limited animation and weak storytelling. It was nice learning a new Chinese legend! Although...a more fitting Chinese Beauty and the Beast tale would be _The White Snake,_ which is already a very famous legend. It's about a man who falls in love with a snake spirit without realizing it, and their following trials and tribulations as a couple against a Buddhist monk until he learns of her true identity but still loves her. :P

    • @AgentGrady
      @AgentGrady 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that would have been a much better fit; there are a lot of good adaptations of that legend as well like the 2006 Chinese drama with Liu Tao, Chen Zihan, Pan Yueming and Xie Ning. I thought the parrot story was going to refer to the Pu Songling story Abao and the beast was going to be Abao because she got Sun Zichu to slice off his sixth finger.

    God I've been waiting so long for this one to get reviewed! Growing up this VHS was one of the reasons why I (Unlike my classmates in elementary school) knew that Disney didn't INVENT Beauty and the Beast. Or 99.999% of all their movies. I had always loved how the Beasts castle looked, the soft water colors and pastels in the background, even the ugly statuesque human characters, but by god I remember loving the beasts design!
    Many versions portray the Beast looking like a lion or a Bear, and the earliest versions portrayed him often like a boar, but Britannicas beast was this... thing! Cast in shadow, shaped like it's painful to just BE him, his voice, those wrinkles. No other version of the character has ever left me with the feeling of "Yes... if that was real it wouldn't matter how well he'd treat me, I would be unsettled just knowing he's in the castle, knowing he could be nearby, knowing he could SENSE MY FEELINGS! I would never get used to his appearance. I may get more comfortable with him and his personality, but his appearance would always unsettle me."

    Turns out it's _possible_ to make blue-flamed candles: you basically have to impregnate the wick and the fuel with a solution of copper chloride. The best results people got came from using an isopropanol/acetone combination as a fuel, but that doesn't mix well with wax, so you're better off making a lamp instead of a candle.
