The bass player in Elliott's band deserves some serious cred for all the vocal harmonies and the awesome bass playing. Playing those songs takes a very amazing musician to duplicate the album versions of the song.
Your comment made me have a thought. Usually bass players in rock/punk/indie are treated like NFL linemen. No one knows their names, no one ever really appreciates the roll that they play on the team/band, there’s no glory in the position, but without them the team/band would probably really really suck. Lol.

Jack black talks so highly of Elliott smith it makes me wonder if they spoke behind stage here. The way jack gets so excited in interviews when he mentioned Elliott, you can hear the smile in his voice. I love them both
What a tragedy he is not still with us. He was just himself. Just a true musician who didn't seem to care about the limelight. I loved that he would just start playing a concert without a word, and then every now and then ask the audience, "you feeling okay." I am saddened to know he suffered from depression. I regret there is no more music from Elliot Smith than what we have. HIs songwriting was truly unique. He had his influences like all musicians. But he sounded like no one else. God bless you, Elliot. Thank you for the very creative songs.
I saw them on the tour where Quasi opened for them and was also their backing band. Simply historically legendary. I got to meet Elliott a few times, he was a sweet, kind, intelligent soul. The world misses your genius, Elliott.
God I wish Elliott had lived on and on. This song demonstrates what an exciting and innovative songwriter he was, plus arrangement and composition. I suspect he played the original piano parts following the vocal melody. All beautiful and brilliant and thanks, Elliott.
Everything is saying it's all over the place, and maybe it is to a degree, but God damn I could never imagine myself performing on Elliott's level. He's the kind of artist I love listening to before a rehearsal or writing session. Hope you've finally found peace wherever it is that you are, man. Your music certainly helps people find peace down here on earth.
It’s gonna be awkward whoever he’d talk to because he was so introverted. Conan wasn’t a bad interviewer though, usually was nice if the person was uncomfortable. Kimmel or Fallon would be hellish for a guy like smith
To think that I saw Elliott with this combo play live in Paris, almost a quarter of a century ago... Insane. The loss of Elliott Smith has been a scar in the history of popular music, and will never be redeemed. To say he was a musical genius is an understatement. Each individual song on "XO" and "Figure 8" has more brilliant ideas and profound lyrics than any whole LPs by any other artist ever since.
I think he's one of the greatest pop writers ever, and the fact that most people haven't heard of him is scandalous. I haven't heard a bad song by him.
Elliott’s music is so beautiful and unfortunately, it seems he could rarely find a drummer that would actually match the tone of the music in this figure 8 era. I have to give this drummer here kudos because he was the only one I’ve seen who does a great job maintaining solid rhythm, great presence, and force without overpowering - in general, doing the job on point and well. Kudos to them.
The keyboard was a little bit too loud and rushing constantly, in the last part of the song you can hear the riff he's doing is completely off beat Edit: 2:40 there's a strange note there
@@Anderson-cc5jy I feel like the keyboard player even psyched Smith out a little bit with that intro and caused him to make the one mistake the second time the phrase is played (when it leads into the outro).
