Call it a mad plan but bring it back but entries from countries have to be non-league. Imagine the scenes if it’s Hashtag United versus some actual Polish plumbers?
I remember being on holiday in Mallorca in 1999 and I think i stumbled across an interToto cup game on the tele...what a crazy format it had, typical UEFA with baffling rules and systems, i fo remember Spurs getting hammered and as an Arsenal fan i did enjoy that,
The last time my team played european football was 17 years ago 😮 beating odense 1-0... they should have replaced the toto with a random draw competition 😅 1 team from each country at random just to give teams and fans the chance of an international competition 😮 also remember there were places in the toto for fairplay, so if you told your players not to get booked all season you could get into it.
But you can denied or forget or ignored when the moment you lifted the Trophy. At that time this Tourney was relevant and so important for the third Tier Club who are unable to qualify UCL and UEFA CUP/Europa. Intertoto and Confrence League is similar interms of Where the Third tier European Club compete in the Tournament..
We've got the Europa Conference League instead 😅. Although I do wonder if UEFA decide to make another competition for the non Big 5 League teams who get eliminated in the group stages of all 3 big UEFA European competitions. Maybe something Celtic could win 😊?
Great memories of the Intertoto cup. Fantastic goal by Luc Nilis for Villa at the Hawthorns in 2000 and then thrashing Basel in 2001 to lift the mighty egg cup. Forget the European cup, "Have you ever won the Intertoto cup" ought to be the chant.
Man I loved this video too, fascinating insight into a competition I only really remember as being an upgrade on friendly games while waiting on the season starting. Nobby Solano lighting it up.
Random question, but what was considered the more prestigious cup competition to win, the UEFA Cup or the UEFA Cup Winners Cup as they were both played at the same time?
To me, The Cup Winners Cup. Back in the day, the UEFA Cup was seen as the 3rd tier tournament as the Cup Winners Cup you could only enter it, if you won your domestic cup. Especially in the 70’s and 80’s. The UEFA Cup was easier to qualify for as back in the day, depending on a nation’s coefficient, 2nd place to 4th was the UEFA Cup slots, but if a team finished high in the league and qualified for the UEFA Cup it’d get passed to another side as the domestic cup winner would qualify for the Cup Winners Cup. The winners of the Cup Winners Cup also played the European Cup winner in the UEFA Super Cup. This continued until the Cup Winners Cup was abolished.
I remember the UEFA Cup Winners Cup used to be classed as the second most important European tournament when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s, ahead of the old UEFA Cup!
@@mr7teen922 well it was the second most prestigious because it was the second oldest and had history 11 years before the UEFA Cup in 1971. So the EC/UCL was founded in 1955 The CWC was founded in 1960 The UEFA CUP was founded in 1971
@@oceanmike8516 Don't forget that before the UEFA cup was founded in 1971, there was the Inter Cities Fairs Cup, which was founded in 1955. England had the last four winners of that trophy (Leeds 67-68, Newcastle 68-69, Arsenal 69-70 and Leeds again in 70-71).

I had no idea that the Intertoto Cup had such a long history! I thought it only started in the 90s!
Call it a mad plan but bring it back but entries from countries have to be non-league. Imagine the scenes if it’s Hashtag United versus some actual Polish plumbers?
The Fenix Cup isn't a bad alternative 😂
For anyone not aware, it's a European competition for lower league clubs (semi-pro teams)
I recall a competition called the Anglo-Italian Cup from the 90s 👍

Lol I mean I wouldn't put it past them at some stage. What you on about, Celtic to win the champions league next season ;) 😅😂

Glad you enjoyed it man! Was a bit of a headache to research I can tell you, but definitely interesting.
Hammarby actually faced against Magdeburg in book in the intertoto cup with 2 other teams!

I feel that was a much more of a prestigious trophy than the old intertoto. But you're right, probably most people have forgotten about it too.

tbh I hope not, think it's good to have a competition like that.

What do you find so distasteful about competitions like the Intertoto and the conference league?
Wdym? I love looking back at Intertoto Cup winners and seeing how well they did.
