    Newbie here, watching from the UK. You’ve sucked me in and I now have to play catch-up. I’m retired, so have some time; between cycling, walking the dogs and tending my allotment. Cheers!

    Wow. So far I'm halfway through the 3rd video. I'm impressed with your "give it hell attitude. Back in the day, this part of the build would have been done with a crew of experienced lumberjacks.

    I am an avid watcher of reality shows and this one is like going to an interesting university class. I think I learned about this YT channel from a show on t.v. and I am now hooked! I am retired and so can watch hours and hours until my eyes fall out! Glad I got to meet ya! PS: I also have a YT channel focusing on travel vids.

    It is an incredible blessing you have Steve working with your "Grand Pappy." I wish I could have done these sorts of things with my grandparents but they all died before I could.

    Compared to watching another popular youtube channel milling up beams for a house, your approach is different. They wanted big beams so they kept the pith, it's interesting to know why you cut out the timbers the way you did. Boat building and house building does require different timbers it seems.
    Plus you go into much more technical detail without adding a lot of fluff and 'this is why we did what we did, my opinion is great, you should listen'.. Just nice simple facts, well explained.

      @AcornToArabella  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, houses and boats have very different requirements in terms of lumber!

    When I was a bit younger (1970) I worked with a bloke who cut two keels from a single Eucalyptus microcorys log (Tallowood) The smaller was 58 feet long and 48 inches by 18 inches in section. I don't remember the dimensions of the larger but it was longer but smaller in section. All the work was done on the forest floor with axes and wedges. The smaller keel went into a tugboat working out of Newcastle, NSW, Australia (a major coal export port)

    FYI, if you have a tractor on site, drive rear to the log, and with something that's added to the 3 point system, spike the log and lift it from the center, then, try to spin it. Much easier.

    • @AcornToArabella
      @AcornToArabella  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately the tractor we have is too small to lift even the small end of the big logs =( Those buggers are heavy!!!

      There are a couple young guys just north of us who have a portable mill business and have a machine for sharpening the bands. We bought them new, made to length and then would run them up to the J-team to get sharpened.

  • @jay90374

    Very interesting! You have probably already figured out, that for real power, use your muscles not your weight, (you can lift much more than you weigh) when turning the big ones.

    • @AcornToArabella
      @AcornToArabella  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is true, but after a couple weeks of working like a dog the muscles were pretty darn tired!

    Not too sure about the editing Alix. It would have been nice to see some of what Steve was doing up in the top of the Maple, and a voice over of why he was lopping the top out instead of just dropping the tree as in the previous videos. And I suspect it was a precaution because it was close to some building or other, but an explanation would have been nice for those who don't know about such things.

    • @AcornToArabella
      @AcornToArabella  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alix was very, very new to editing then. Even some ideas about camera placement or how to tell the story were things that were developed over time.

    I'm surprised you didn't anchor seal the end grain of your lumber to lessen the chance of checking during the drying process....how has it done over the last year?

    • @AcornToArabella
      @AcornToArabella  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Once it was all milled and stacked we gave the ends a coat of linseed oil and some copper preservative to help slow the drying and prevent fungus and such from entering the end grain. Most of the lumber behaved very well so far, a few checked some what badly but if the lumber won't behave then we don't want it in the boat anyway. Kinda like a mini torture test to weed out the inferior hunks of timber =)

      Acorn To Arabella which is a terribly sad reflection... Before our laws changed in 1974 at least 45 good people, mostly farmers, lost their lives annually due to overturning tractors in the UK alone. I've also seen much larger tractors than yours dragged about like toys when tied to falling trees by people who thought they knew best...
      Good luck, and may your God go with you... You need his help more than you know
