I picked up a D550 for AU$40 (about $25 US) at an auction. Nobody there knew what it was. All I need now is to find a PG 1000 for $40 and I’ll be the happiest guy in synth world. 😂
I picked up a DW8000 for 70 bucks. They asked 350 but when I got there it had nothing but random sounds. It appeared the battery was dead and it had lost its memory. I told the guy: not gonna take chances here as it may be something else and if I pay so much I am screwed. In the end he let it for only 70 bucks. I got home, ordered battery holders and got a couple of CR2032's. Sadly I had to dismantle half the bloody synth because some genius at KORG decided it would be really smart to solder that battery on the board! But I managed and loaded in the sounds again by connecting my computer's headphone outlet into the DW800 Tape input and played back the signal I found somewhere on google. And the DW9k works like a sharm. it's amazing how good those old buckets sound.

That's what was awesome in that era: those sounds were completely new. You actually heard something no living creature had ever heard before. I have the Korg collection and thus the virtual M1 but a buddy of mine had a real M1 20 years ago. I loved that thing. They go pretty cheap nowadays tbh.

Ohh... back in 1987 I had a JX8P and totally lusted after the D50. I remember a friend getting one a few months after it was released and could not believe the Soundtrack, Digital Native Dance and other sounds. The year after I went to A1 music in Manchester and checked out the M1 and DX7II and again I was knocked out... to be able to play a sound that actually sounded like a piano was a big deal...
Within a few years every band in the area had them and I think they added so much to a bands sound compared to the string synths and organs they had before.
That Robin S sound still holds up to this day... an absolute classic...

I have both. Only because they were both so iconic. They overlap in some areas, but each has it's strengths and weaknesses. Both, however, were ground breakers. Still warming up to digital. Always kinda thought a synth should sound like a synth, not something realistic.
The D-50 always has that synthetic sound, whereas the M1 really chased realism on some of it's patches

Cool thing about the Korg M1 and Wavestation VST plugins is, that they can handle polyphonic aftertouch.
That's a very valid point!
I like that the M1 VST includes all of the samples and presets from the M and T series, as well as 2 effect processors for each of the 8 patches in a multi. That last feature may not be as important when we have so many effect options in our DAWs, but it's great when doing layered patches. The VST's filters also have resonance, which the hardware didn't.
I hope Roland will release a full keyboard synthesizer with LA Synthesis in the future. It is still so beautiful that there is a market for.

Very cool! I have the D-05 and for such a small box, it's sound phenomenal! I also have the M1 as plugin, and that works just fine for me! Great video! Celebrating cool synths is always awesome!

I bought a D-50 when Roland lowered the price right after the M1 came out. I remember getting a postcard in the mail from Roland (I was a subscriber to Keyboard Magazine and some how this Roland postcard showed up in the mail!). I really wanted the M1 but they were sky high at the time. I no longer have the D-50 keyboard but I have a D-50 card for my V-Synth XT.
Nice! Have you tried my preset pack with the V-Synth XT? I don't know if anyone's tried them yet.
M1 vs D50 - what a tough battle. I don't think I could pick a winner with this one! I'm curious what Eric Persing could do with an M1, haha.
My Ensoniq Mirage came with a disk of D50 sounds. Thankfully Native Dance was one of them. The Mirage has an OS for it called SoundProcess which effectively turns it into a D50 where you can use your Mirage samples along with single cycle waves. It is a pain in the butt but very cool.

@@VultureCulture For me the difficult part was just remembering all the parameter numbers. Always had the manual open when I was programming on it. Soundprocess also gave you multiple algorithms for your samples and waves, one of them included "timed loops" so you could effectively arpeggiate your samples. Good stuff.

55:48 about M1's Nimbus, actually Roland has a patch that sounds almost the same with Nimbus called "Ice Rain". But this patch can only be found on D-50's brothers, Roland D-20/D-10/D-5 and the module version D-110. Ice Rain patch is also available in Roland MT-32. Roland inherit this D-20 patch as a part of GM Standards in Sound Canvas series.

Roland has a more high quality sounds but the Korg has more sounds you can use.There both great synths so I have to get both ( luckily we have vst synths now days so it’s easier to do !).Personally I own the Fantom 7 and have the Korg legacy collection which works fine. .For me a good hardware synths has at least 73 keys and no menu diving . lol
I wonder if the D-50 patches are still used in today's music. DX7 and M1 patches still are.

I have both but my favorite is the D-50 , because the virtual analog synth part is more use full and M1 is clearly a ROMpler than a true synth , but some sounds can't made in other synth than M1, that why I style have a M1 in my set up

I think part of that M1 Organ sound is a percussive sound at the attack... on actually organs there's usual a switch called "percussive" which is definitely switched "on" on that M1 patch.
Maybe if you could find a partial on the D50 to simulate this, it would improve the patch.
There's actually a combi with the percussive layer on it on the M1
@@VultureCulture M1 typically has (very) percussive attack in PCM samples, and Organ Program is no different. That said, I've tried layering Karimba to Organ in Combi mode to add 'woody' flavor to attack.

I was gonna mention this last night on the stream, but kinda missed what you were doing. one of the rainstick patches, was in the beginning of the new kids on the block song funny feeling, it's at the very beginning of the song.
actually, it was the watery drum loop sound that they used. not sure if that's korg m1 or roland d-50

The U20 compliments the D50 and falls somewhere between the M1 and the Proteus, and then we have the D70 :)
Wow just stunned in this. Love those sounds! Do you know of any small synths (volca size) that comes close to these sounds? I’m just a noodler otherwise I’d probably get the wave station.
Korg Volca FM 2 really shines as a replacement for the DX7, the third of the holy Trinity of 80's synths.

I don't think it sounds like a Prophet VS but it's a pretty cool piece of gear at that price!

The M1 Universe has a bit of the IceRain preset that showed up in the Roland E-series, SoundCanvas/GE/GS ... where did it come from?
I think Universe was the first example of this type of sample based pad sound.

Which is the King? That's an impossible question bro. In theory the M1 is the king but the D50 is so iconic.... I'll call the M1 the king and the D50 the queen. Now let them have babies.
M1 was the king of the early workstations. D-50 was the king of sound… so much so that the M1 "sound" (as much as it survives at all) is the continual evolving into today's Korg synths (which, IMHO, have always suffered sonically, though their specs have always been relatively good) whereas not recognising Digital Native Dance (which my Dad, properly, characterised as a marketing tool and yet which survived far beyond its intended purpose!) is to not have any association with the '80s or '90s (as one example!). The D-50 was (arguably) the _last_ of the "warm"-sounding digital synths before manufacturers turned full cold-turkey (HA!) and started producing such synths _en masse_ (e.g Waldorf, Alesis, Kurzweil, Korg, Yamaha, &c)!
Okay, re: "realism", I agree the M1 did a better job of realism _as a workstation_ (though, for a couple of chintzy examples, 1) I don't believe any plebe _ever_ thought the Seinfeld bass was "real" (in fact, I thought it was a processed D-50 bass, myself!)) but 2) the important thing for the M1 was being a) truly one of the first true workstation synths and b) having independent FX that an entire sequence could run through. I _clearly_ remember the M1 saving my college bacon because the global effects allowed me to sound like an ensemble. Again, I'm left with: for sheer general sound design superiority, the D-50 wins hands-down. But for being a) arguably the first commercial "workstation" synth _with_ a D-50-like sample-set that Korg would go on to make great use of through and until the Nautilus… FFS, _you_ tell _me_ who wins that bloody contest?!

good video, enjoyed the sounds and synth history. I prefer the Roland but D-50 is not actually a virtual analog synth. Both are sample based PCM synths. The first VA synths were called physical modelling in 1995. Korg Prophecy and Nord Lead. JP-8000 was Roland's first analog modeling synth in 1996.
While I agree the D-50 isn't a virtual analog (because it's more or less a marketing term invented by Nord to sell their synths) the D-50 is not only sample-based. Half the engine is true analog-style subtractive synthesis (PWM and everything not possible in the JD-800)
How can the D50 do analog subtractive without a filter? I'm confused! 😕

@@VultureCulture Mind Blown! Stupid people on the internets said it had no filter! I guess that means it's in that PPG Wave, Korg DW-6000/8000, Prophet VS family of wavetable-ish synthesizers with resonant filters.
I guess the Roland D50 is a little different though, it has those partial samples (short initial attack portion) and that 4 tone mixing thing that Roland was into.
Those earlier synths didn't really have partials, did they? It was more a collection of interesting single cycle (of even half-cycle) waveforms.
The D50 simulates a "filter" by rendering its "S" synth partials as a saw wave that sounds filtered using filter tables, and in that process can also output that saw wave as a square wave. So, it doesn't have a discrete filter as a separate process in series, but still produces the sound of one (resonant, at that). As such, it cannot "filter" its "P" PCM partial sampled waveforms. The M1 actually filters its PCM via two custom filter chips, but without resonance. Roland introduced resonant PCM filters later in 1988 on its 12-bit S-330 and S-550 samplers (within months of M1 debut).
On D-50 it takes 4 tones to make a vibraphone, organ, piano, and choir, etc. Yet none of them are as good as M1's with 1 single tone. Ain't that ridiculous?

I tried VST of both them 'classics'. M1 is not bad, some sounds are useful, while D-50 is downright cheesy. Nativedance patch is good, but you'll be stupid to use it.
I' Wil never part with my D50 As it contineus to amaze me. I had a Korg M1 last year but sold it, now i regret it haaha. For me, for your instrument emulations, choir sounds and short sampled sounds, the Korg M1 clearly wins for its clarity. But for pads, strings etc, the D50 clearly wins imo. Its gritty lofi synth engine is mindblowing even to this day. A unique character even my Roland Romplers and dare i say, Jupiter X cannot emulate. I love my Jupiter X, but some of its D50 emulations are significantly off, specifically the soundtrack patch.
Yeah, Roland really nailed it with this one and there's no comparison. It is shocking how far off their newer stuff can be.

Doesn't really seem fair. Check out 23:05. I've never heard an M1 sound anything but generic and kinda bland, and that's coming from a massive Korg fanboy. D-50 all the way for me, I'm afraid.
The D-50 certainly shines at what it does well.
For me the M1 is a cheat because everything sounds good with it, you do not need to do any final mix. Sounds awesome. I have the D50 and I love it, is low-fi but very inspiring. And I like that type of sound where you have to make it happen. My problem with the M1 is the enclosure, too big and too much plastic, very delicate and bulky. That is something I never liked about Korgs.
Yeah they really created the big black impenetrable box aesthetic. Even the DX7 has a little color
