Thanks, this video sold me the Motu. I did a blind test with this video to avoid any bias and Motu won for me hands down. It has much fuller rounder sound IMO. But Audient is also nice.
Glad to help, yes the motu is the one I personally kept and I sold the others. The Audient sounded great especially through the monitors but had a few software hiccups. They might get fixed in updates but overall I think the motu sounds best and has the most compelling features and the graphic display is excellent for monitoring and setting gain
@@KeroDean motu 2 is 66% more expensive than id4. considering the price focusrite and audient are not that bad neither. I like the videos in which audio interfaces are compared using instruments such as electric guitars since most comparisons are made based on vocals.
If these are on the exactly the same settings and played in exactly the same way with the dist. guitar you can really hear the issues: Scarlet adds higher harmonics - ok, but lacks bass, sharpness, grip and punch that Motu has, it sounds wider because of the inter channel bleeding, also you can hear some Jet like effect because of some kind of phasing issue going on there. Audient has even more inter channel bleeding but no additional phasing, also less grip and bass, but has a certain sharpness a nice attack - It sounds decent. At first with the guitar distortion on, Scarlet and Audient may sound kind-a nicer to a general public in this case, but it's because they sounds like the guitar has an additional FX's added on - with less bass, brighter, squashed and wide. But that's something you can add on to the Motu sound, but you can never take it off the Scarlet and iD4's dry output sound, and we need a clean outputs and good A/D conversion.
The difference in the distortion section is night and day, this sold me on Motu M2. Thank you for your valuable information Radovan! It got me figured out what was going on and the theory behind it. Actually the sound of distortion guitar for a guitar enthusiasm like me is the key for choosing proper audio interface. I couldn't thank you enough!
Excellent comparison. I think the Audient has a bit more "analog style" warmth to it, but the MOTU is very close and a little more transparent to my ear. Focusrite has the "budget preamp" sound that is fine in a mix, but really unpleasant stand alone. I've had a 2i2 1st gen, 4i4 1st gen, and 18i8 2nd gen, and I'm not likely to ever purchase another of their products due to driver issues for Core Audio applications. Meanwhile, MOTU is a legendary geek owned/operated company and actually made in the USA.
Yes you're right, the audient even touts their analog sound. And when plugged in and monitoring from the audient it sounds amazing. However Ive had a few computer restarts using the audient, I think its a software thing but it works fine most of the time. I'll probably do a review of it then sell it. The M2 is overall my favourite so far. It has a lot of versatility and clarity as you said. And gives you an on/off switch which is so handy also a little digital display.

I'd agree. I have the motu and the pick attack and dynamics are not so audible on the motu as compared to the audient. I'm seriously thinking of trading my m2 for a id4 mkII. The audient also has a much more powerful headphone Amp. It can power 600ohm headphones with ease.
Wish I had a house that would allow me to have the M2 motu with monitors. I inherited a sennheiser hd650 which has an impedance of 300 ohms, and only the audient iD4 mkii has the capacity to drive it.
Good comparison. The MOTU is by far the best interface in this comparison. It has a depth and punch that the Focusrite definitely lacks. The Audient is in the middle, but sounds weak and two-dimensional. I am biased, as I've had a couple Focusrites (both Scarlett and Clarett) and have never liked the sound or their awful software controller. I have an Audient ID22, but I am selling it in favor of the MOTU M4.
Motu sounded the best on clean, but horrible on distorted channel, which is a dealbreaker for me. Motu's sound with distortion was the opposite of what a tight metal guitar sound is for me, just pile of horrible low end rumble. Are you sure there wasn't any changes to the settings or something with the MOTU? Sounds way off, like the tone knob was rolled all the way down on the guitar.
Well the the other preamps were only the solo models, the 2i2 actually sounds better than the solo version and it's definitely the same for the audient Id14. In short the solo versions sound trash anyways! Lol
Don’t know why I liked the Scarlett with the guitar better, more punch or something. I don’t know if you were just playing differently or what. Louder? It’s hard to say.
I am surprised that MOTU sounded better than Audient since the latter made great preamps. Unfortunately MOTU is lacking in connection options, the 828 I am looking as well as 16 have no ADAT input.

Hey, yes a cheap microphone will still sound great through an expensive interface. Because the Motu has a low noise floor the microphone will be generally quiet and clear. I have a very cheap microphone that sounds great plugged in. I will demo it in a new video soon
audient has the rounded off transients, but they're not very clear. scarlett has the clear transients, but not rounded off/harsher. motu has the best of both, net transients, but rounded off, as they should. by far the best. audient, second, more electric, but a little muffled and mellow. focusrite, third, not muffled, but more mellow, a little thinner and honky. very, very small differences, though, more of an impression. great comparison! and the segments really help navigate between the sounds.
now that i've owned all of them, i can confirm, motu has the best sound, to my year. id4 is rounder and smoother - richer texture - but the transients are a little mellow. focusrite has a little honk that makes it lose body, and seem muddy and thin at the same time - the least good for me. i also have an evo4, which is great, especially for the money. closer to the motu, very net - even very slightly metallic and thinner, but ever so slightly - very clear and strong signal. i'm keeping the m4, between id4 and evo4 i have to sell one, and don't know which. evo4 has lower latency than id4, by a little, the auto gain is great, and the impedance is higher on di. id4 has a great build quality, that controller knob which i like, and a little more vibe on the di - but, as i've said, a little mellower and more muffled in the transients - the longer latency, and no smart gain. tough one. i'd keep all three, but one will just be out here collecting dust and keeping money tied in. and i don't know which.
@@botzer8817 no, usually the mic pres are pretty good, that's what everybody focuses on, it's the hi-zs that are the most sensitive. i've tested the id4 and it sounds great, very smooth. i've decided to keep the id4 for that smoothness, even though i'm not yet convinced on guitars - it makes them kind of mellow, it only has a 500k impedance for the hi-z - and the motu - which is very clean, so i'm sure between the two of them i'll have no problem with the mic pre.
@@thatparodychannel7594 i don't know, you can check the specs, the output dynamic range is always listed. it's not near hearing levels on either one, and if you crank up the monitors, you'll probably hear the hiss from those before you hear the interface.

In all other tests Motu's preamps were more clean but in distorted test, the output just burst a lot. Also i like the WIDE and Wet Audient more than anything else. Its ready to perform Live without much processing!!

I'm thinking of getting a Focusrite Scarlett 8i6. Less liked than the rest by the community, but I feel it's the more straight forward for reamping and working alongside my KPA.

Hey, when I try to run that software it tells me "couldn't reliably detect test signal". But when I open Ableton live (with M2) and look at the audio latency at 64 samples its a total overall latency is 8.79ms (input latency: 4.52ms, output latency: 4.27ms) for the audient at 64 samples its total overall latency is 8.94ms (input latency: 4.58ms, output latency: 4.35ms) Hope that helps

Im not too familiar with the clarett, but it looks very comparable to the M2, the clarett has the 'air' setting and a few more ports but for me personally I really love the graphic lcd display on the m2, and the m2 is a bit cheaper than the clarett from the look of it

Yes that's one facet of it. I think interfaces have a lot of facets that one might want to consider when purchasing. Thats partly why I titled this video "guitar and bass examples" so I could show specifically the clarity and headroom of guitar and bass recording with this interface.
Thank you for comparison! Scarlett - my favourite tone out of those 3. Very pristine clean with tight bass, just perfect for electric guitar recording. Audient - muffled, overbearing lower mids. Most likely due to 500kOhm input impedance. Motu - balanced, nice tone. Very close competitor to Scarlett.

The weakness of the Audient is because the MOTU sound is a bit louder.
On guitar overdrive m2 is hard clipped signal at -13dB so it feels beefer, scarlett is lower volume at -13dB but peak, and audient is -15dB peak.

what is your signal chain in the DI? sounds very clean!
Straight into the interface for the DI sections, and then into software amps (as specified on the video) I used a few different software VST amps

C'est vrai, l'encodage youtube diminue la qualité sonore. Mais j'espère que cela pourrait néanmoins être utile

With headphones playing, I felt the audient did sound a little better but I think honestly they're all so close its hard to tell

Yes that's one facet of it. I think interfaces have a lot of facets that one might want to consider when purchasing. Thats partly why I titled this video "guitar and bass examples" so I could show specifically the clarity and headroom of guitar and bass recording with this interface.

Scarlett - my favourite tone out of those 3. Very pristine clean with tight bass, just perfect for electric guitar recording.
Audient - muffled, overbearing lower mids. Most likely due to 500kOhm input impedance.
Motu - balanced, nice tone. Very close competitor to Scarlett.
